Ohhhh... as with o2 pay and go of the iPhone 3g... no visual voicemail or call merging....
And a new authorised feature you can not get with the iPhone 3g S.... no internet tethering....

http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/paygo.html

Still want one

Posted by masseur
mobiles.co.uk, a part of the CPW group apparantly, have their pre-order page up for the 3G S on monthly contracts with garanteed 18th June despatch.

Go via Quidco for £60 cashback!

Posted by J273
CPW have pre orders up now.....No payg pre ordering though

Posted by RyaN
So AT&T are allowing current iPhone 3G owners to trade in for a 3G S upgrade - free of charge! And they were all on 24 month contracts to begin with... Compared to the majority of O2 users on 18 months, that makes it even worse! Meh! I would be so up for this, if only O2 actually cared about not ripping of their customers.

I really think the 3G S is being priced out of the market, and we're supposed to be in the middle of a recession... who the hell can afford the prices they are trying to charge? It's just plain ridiculous

Posted by weirdwilli
The iPhone 3G was supposed to be made cheaper, with the 3GS standing only a bit higher than what the 3G was before it's reduction

What the hell happened?

Posted by RyaN
Feck knows mate. Apple even said in the keynote about iPhone's being more affordable. Yeah maybe in US, not in UK. Like us Brits have that much disposable income atm

Posted by bavlondon2
Did they really say that? What a load of bs. This one isn't even subsidised. I can see a lot of people just skilpping this generation. By the time they come out of contract it will almost be time for the next iphone. And these phone companies are trying to push 24 month contracts too. Horrible.

If anyone missed it there is a programme I seen on BBC's Click tonight all about Apple. You can see it on BBC iplayer

That was an interesting watch.

Foe those upgrading to the 3GS what colour are you planning on getting?

Currently have a black 3g but tempted this time to go with white but heard of the cracking problem .etc

What you think black / white?

Posted by Superluminova
anyone know how i can get one of these on vodafone?

Posted by masseur
Vodafone in NZ sell iPhone, as do India and possibly other countries too

otherwise I guess its the usual story of buying from a country like Italy or Belgium that sell them sim free, or waiting for a unlock solution to become available

@J273, I would have liked a white 3G so may well choose the white 3G S but I'll probably decide on the day when I see them side by side

Posted by jackdaniels
i have the white iphone and thinking im going to go for the black version this time... Might even just get a factory unlocked one if it cost loads to upgrade

Posted by Mr Miyagi
jackdaniels Iphones do not come factory unlocked. Apple have the handsets locked to various networks in each country.

Sounds "Factory Unlocked" to me.

Posted by Mr Miyagi
Problem with that is the Apple Warranty is only limited to that country you buy it in. So handset goes faulty inside UK and you are from UK. However handset purchased in Belgium = to get handset fixed under warranty you have to travel all the way to Belgium??

First, Apple do sell factory unlocked iphones in countries that do not allow Sim locking

second, agree that iphone warranty is only for the country of purchase

however, third, you don't have to travel at all. you merely have to post the iphone back to the country service centre in the country of purchase for warranty issues. we have at least one member here who has done exacty that (to Italy), with success

One country --- Singapore --- doesn't allow simlocking. Belgium's law was stricken down.

Other countries where factory unlocked iphones are sold --- they are doing so for business reasons, nothing to do with simlocking laws.

I follow all this very closely and I agree that Belgium recently had a ruling against the ban of bundling contracts with phones after many years (at least 10 that I can recall without research) of such practices, but as far I as I am aware this is still undergoing appeals and is not yet law

I'll be in Belgium next w/e (Antwerp and Bruges) and plan to visit a couple of my regular phone suppliers to suss out what the latest story is on all this

Posted by spine6
From all the iphones, this is the 1st iphone that makes me say wow... I want this damn phone!!!

The law was struck down by the European Court of Justice and there won't be any appeals by the Belgium government because the Belgium government agreed with the ECJ.

There isn't a change in the Belgium laws on the books yet --- because the Belgium coalition government has been a total mess (there were real fears that the country might split into 2 separate countries along linguistic lines). Most likely thing that will happen is that the belgium carrier with the exclusive contract will sell the new iphone simlocked with a contract with a subsidized price and the government isn't going to bother with them.

Ok, I'm almost sold on this. I am nearly a reverted iPhone hater LOL. I use my phone for Sat Nav and Tom Tom have wetted my appetite for this phone, a 16GB in white on O2 PAYG.
Now, being new to this I need some advice, first, is it noticeably big in the pocket? Is O2's customer service any good? I have been with Orange for years with no trouble what so ever so will be a bit nervous about changing.
What's the battery like on the current model if you just use it as a normal phone making a couple of calls?
What are the games on it like and are they free?

Another requirement of mine is a half decent camera, it is annoying there is no flash, but is the new camera any good at all? And speaking of Tom Tom, do you have to use the docking cradle to use it, or will the built in GPS work?

Really can't believe I want one, but so far I've wanted an HTC Magic, SE Satio, Palm Pre. There is a LOT of choice this year but the iPhone offers me what I want, I'm just concerned about its size a bit and how good the camera will be, also how I can adjust to the touch screen.

My current phone is the good ol G900 and I find its camera disappointing so would have high hopes.

assuming that really is taken by the 3G S, its not too bad taking into account the usual youtube compression.

Keen to see an original iphone 3G S video...mind you I wasn't too dissapointed with the video offering on the jailbroken 3G... just a bit put off by the £20 purchase price for the full version, so if they've done anything close to that, or better in the 3G S I'll be happy for my limited video usage

anyone getting mildly excited about getting the 3G S tomorrow?

I plan to head to an O2 store for their opening at 09:02 (so they told me), or if I'm up early I might venture to the Apple Store at 08:00.

if the queues are silly though, I'll go back later, but I don't really see that it will be like that this time (?)

Posted by anonymuser
I can't see the excitement and the queuing being quite so marked as last time, which is no reflection on the 3G S, it's just that so many people are locked into contract with the 3G with no affordable means of upgrading - and less real hardware incentive than last time too. The 3G S, and more particularly the OS 3 software, is gunning for all the people that have found reasons not to buy an iPhone yet, and by definition they're more of a shy, retiring, and dwindling bunch...

Posted by mrmilo69
I hope they release their upgrade tariffs soon, although they'll probably be the same as newl ones, maybe 100 more texts

Posted by ares
@appoloa, just do it, you don´t regret it, i´m telling you. It´s pocketable enough - if you want a big screen, somo sacrifices have to be made

Yeah im going to try the Strand o2 store at 9 and see how busy it is

I've recently changed to an unlimited web bolt on with O2.

Do you still have to ring them up for you to get the fastest mobile web from them? Don't they have to activate something on your account?

No, I don't think so. It's wider than a lot of phones obviously, there's no hiding that, but it's very slim and quite light at the same time so it slips in the pocket very easily and doesn't really show.

Is O2's customer service any good?

I've never had any real problem with the service so I can't say what they're like if you do have issues, but they handled my number port quite efficiently, the billing's always been fine, and they send out the odd useful text - like recent reminders about the new OS upgrade and what to do about MMS etc - so I'm happy. Coverage is as good as I was used to previously on Vodafone (where I live, in a fairly rural area, O2 and Vodafone are generally the best bet - Orange, T-Mobile and 3 are very patchy).

What's the battery like on the current model if you just use it as a normal phone making a couple of calls?

If you literally just used it for a couple of calls a day and it was in your pocket the rest of the time, it would probably go on for a good few days. But nobody uses their iPhone like that unless they really have to! In typical use, with calls, texts, a bit of music, a lot of browsing on the wifi, email polling in the background, the odd game etc, I can go two days between charge if I need to - but I more usually charge every day just out of habit.

What are the games on it like and are they free?

There are no games on it when it comes out the box, but there's a huge range of free games in the Appstore you can download quickly and easily, right on the phone. Some of the freebies will be ad-supported, some will be tasters of larger games, and some are obviously better than others, but there's plenty of good stuff just waiting to be downloaded.

If you're willing to pay for a little more quality, there are a lot of really great games for as little as 59p. Appstore pricing is brilliant.

Another requirement of mine is a half decent camera, it is annoying there is no flash, but is the new camera any good at all? And speaking of Tom Tom, do you have to use the docking cradle to use it, or will the built in GPS work?

I can't speak for the new camera but Engadget has some gallery shots from it in its review here - http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/17/iphone-3g-s-review

TomTom uses the built in GPS, the cradle is just an accessory, but since they've not released the pricing etc yet I don't know how all that works out exactly. Maybe you have to pay a fortune for the accessory just to get the app, or vice versa, which would be rubbish. On the other hand, maybe it'll just be £5 in the appstore, you never know.

Upgrade tariffs are up, exactly the same as new customers. Great! All iPhone 3G's are free on 35 a month contracts (24 months)

@ares and boinng,

Thanks guy's, I went and had a re-play of one in an O2 store today as I'm working tomorrow and the weekend, but I had a play with the keyboard which was important, I wasn't too bad, think it's something I can get used to, I am going to wait till the next pay cheque and snap one up just need to get my Pac code.
I use PAYG so for me to get a decent SE or any other smart phone costs a lot anyway as I buy sim free, so the fact I get 12 months free internet over 3G is a big boon and I asked about the bolt on after and was told this is pay as you go to no direct debit, Fantastic!

I've read some more on the Tom Tom and some people think the cradle has it's own GPS chip to allow the boost in reception which wouldn't surprise me, it's sold me to be honest as I'll just use it as a permanent cradle for the phone, it could be a Christmas pressy too. I also asked about the 3G coverage and it's non existent in my Village in Dorset LOL, but then again so is everybody else anyway. 2G coverage is fine, I'll use WiFi at home anyway, but someone at work has confirmed they get a 3G signal on the iPhone at work so that's good.

I make few calls and text, but it's a device you just play with, hence the games question. I don't think I'll be able to wait hahaha, but at least I should be able to walk in the store and get it in a week or 2. And from what I've been reading, unless the Carphone Warehouse are cheaper I think I'll buy it from the O2 shop, is that a sensible idea? Or do you recommend Carphone Warehouse?

I was all set on the Satio as the latest phone, but EVERY review I've read on the N97, Satio and Omnia have all said the same, the devices are nice and specs are very good but no matter how pretty Symbian looks it just cannot match WebOS, Android or iPhone and feels dated. So this is another reason for the change of heart, I want some of this new fangled interaction haha, use my phone for more things then text and calls. I really have never known a phone decision to be so hard, so many smart phones to choose from now I had to REALLY think about what I want.

EDIT: Well just called Orange and requested my PAC, I think the guy was trying to tell me his Orange Blackberry syncs better with iTunes then his apparent iPhone does? hahahaha, never mind, I was expecting talk like that, so Apple and O2 here I come......

anyone know what CPW return policy is on PAYG iphones?

quite interested in picking up a 3GS but will be the first time ive tried an iphone and want to know if i can return it if i dont like it

cheers

Posted by masseur
ok, well its silly season again.
if Moorgate is anything to go by, the queue at the O2 shop is about 30 people, which is about the same as last year, and its taking around 10 mins to process each person.
The CPW shop has virtually no queue but they have limited selection of new models, only white in 32gb, and NO payg!

Posted by mrmilo69
Give it a few hours and i'm sure they'll be on sale in the forum!

Posted by masseur
lol

oh well, got one now. After writnig the last post I decided to check out the Apple personal shop experience and at 09:30 there was a slot available for 10:00 at the regent street store.

So I jumped in a cab and its a much nicer way to buy stuff that all that queuing!

When I got back there's still many of the people I saw originally saw ine the O2 queue!

Posted by mrmilo69
What did you get in the end?

Posted by masseur
32gb white

Posted by smilerthe cheshirecat
Just picked up a white 32gb... at 10:30... picked up from o2.... no queueing

Hey... if you are that way inclined.... and I am because I tried it... slipped the 3G S box in the old 3G box... Some clever packaging bods at Apple....

Posted by masseur
...and a new a/c plug too

Posted by anonymuser
Massuer, just out of curiosity, what happens when you plug your new 3GS into iTunes - is there any possibility of restoring the data and settings from your old phone onto the new one, or does it have to be set up as a whole new device? Presumably all the apps you bought on/for the 3G can be put straight onto the new one?

Posted by masseur
can't answer that until tonight when I get home, unfortunately, so someone else will probably fill us in on those questions
I'm assuming the content will also synch over, just as it did when I got my 3G replaced a few weeks ago, and since its the same O/S I don't see any harm in the settings synching over too

Posted by smilerthe cheshirecat
Boinng... Masseur is right.... I am doing just that at the moment... gives you an option in iTunes to set up for a new iphone.... or your iphone profile from previously synced

Posted by anonymuser
Ho well, wait and see I guess. I've always liked the idea of just being able to transfer *everything* when you change phones, and keep all your old SMS and everything else when you upgrade each year, I'm interested to see if that's possible with the iPhone.

Apple are at least halfway there already with the OS update service - if OS 3 had been a new Windows Mobile rom for example, you can bet we'd all have wiped clean phones and unusable backups right now..

EDIT - just seen Smiler's post, great news!

when I had the palm V and Vx it used to work like this. update th O/S or get a replacement device and simply resynch it all back

WM is really lacking in this department for sure.

Posted by mutleyboy
o2 near me had sold out, CPW had them and were willing to sell on PAYG but when I asked about returns policy was told there was none unless faulty.

Gutted lol really wanted to try one but its a lot of money to spend when i dont know if i would get on with the keyboard for texting, all previous touch screen phones i have used (and it has been many) have been poor with this and led to me getting rid, and I know the iphone is meant to be better for typing but I need to be able to use it for a week to see really

Do O2 offer a 14 day return on PAYG iphones if they have been used?
