Have you guys checked in your messages in the menu? I thought my C510 and W995 didn't have it either, because I had to "activate" it by going in to the menu and chosing once to view them under "conversations", after that they all came in the threaded way

This might be why you aren't getting it. If not, then it's strange.

Posted by piflechien
Guys guys This SMS conversation feature availability is a well known "problem".
It depends on the CDA of your phone.
remember that was the same thing when it appeared on the C905.
Some region/country/branding have it, others don't.

Unfortunately there is no way (yet) to enable it via a simple customize_upgrade.xml file like it was the case on the DB3210 platform, because Aino is a new platform : DB3350 which is not (yet?) supported by A2Uploader

Same thing goes for the facebook app. Not available for every CDA.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yeah that must be right because mine is R1BA049 as well, and there's definitely no conversation style messaging. My girlfriend has a W508 with it, so I know how it works and where to activate it and so on. It's just not there.

So far that's the only disappointment I have with this phone.

My 2 cents:

I have now owned this phone for one week. The best part is that it arrived in 1½ days from Hong Kong to Minnesota, USA. I was shocked at how quickly it arrived!

This phone does NOT have stereo speakers and the loud speaker is located on the bottom of the phone. It is also not very loud. Both of these facts are disappointing.

The user interface is a little sluggish. And there are weird instances with functionality because of the nature of the phone being open or closed. All of these instances could have been solved if Sony just allowed for a full touch interface.

First of all, you cannot truely lock the phone. There is a lock button on the top but only works when the phone is closed. However sliding the phone open always takes the phone out of lock.

Second, if you receive a text message when the phone is closed, the only thing you can touch on the screen is a "x" which closes the message. If you want to read the message you have to open the phone. WHY??

Third, if a call comes in when the phone is closed you can touch the screen to answer it (kind of cool - you slide your finger across), BUT, there is a huge rectangular box at the bottom of the screen that will end the call if you touch it. My cheek or chin ALWAYS touches this box and the call ends. This is because the sensor by the ear speaker is not sensative enough. This sensor is supposed to notice proximity to your face/ear and disable the screen, but the only way I can disable the screen is by holding the phone in an unnatural position or by jamming it into my ear. Not cool!

Fourth, the screen is sometimes unresponsive to touch. I cannot determine why though, because in the service test menu there is a way to test the touchscreen and even the slightest touch is recognized every time, and on every part of the screen.

Believe it or not the Aino is replacing my W800i that I bought over 4 years ago. I have experience with other Sony phones however so I know what to expect. I purchased a K850i when it first came out but sold it within a month. In hindsight I did like that phone.

I also just noticed that you cannot assign a video ringtone. When did Sony do away with this? I know the K850i could do it.

I guess I'm surprised that aside from 8 megapixel that the functionality is not much different from my 4 year old W800i. And the W800i was WAY faster!

The positives are a very large screen which looks great! And really, that's the only thing I care about. I was getting sick of my 1.8" 176x220 screen. Also my camera didn't work anymore so I like that I have one again, however, the camera on the Aino is very sluggish. It takes over 5 seconds just to be able to take a picture, and almost twice as long to process and save. You also cannot take pictures with the slider open, instead the screen will tell you to close the phone.

Oh, someone asked about the possibility of HD video. It cannot do that, but the reason it says that in the picture menu is because 3.1 megapixel is just barely over HD spec (1920x1080). 2.3 megapixels = 1920x1200. And the video menu lists nHD as one of the options, which equals 640x360 (half the width and height of 720p).

Well, hopefully an update will fix a lot of these issues. Because of this I am hopeful and will keep this phone. I can't see why Sony would not make this phone full-touch capable!

TO GET THE CONVERSATION's TAB

Main menu -> Messages
The second item will be either "INBOX" or "CONVERSATION".

If it is Inbox, go into it.

There will be two 'tabs'.
Choose the second one,
Exit that view by pressing the cancel call button.

Now when you receive a new msg, the conversation tab will pop up.

If you want to go back to 'Inbox" view, just choose the other tab as above.

Nice Options by SE, but they should have documented it!

+1

I hate the activity menu!

Does anyone have the MMR70 FM Transmitter?

Does it work on the Aino? Sony Ericssons website says it does (and to be honest I have no reason to dispute it as Sony Ericsson seems to be quite good with accessories)

Isn't stereo speakers like GSM Arena said?

I've been looking forward to this phone for quite some time, and after some of the reviews I've read, I'm feeling quite disheartened. Although I know I shouldn't believe everything I read, so I was wondering if anyone had any feedback on some of the concerns I have:

1. I'm worried about the response time of the operating system, and the lags that lots of people have apparently encountered. I've also heard of the touchscreen freezing, and the phone having to be restarted.

2. I've heard that you HAVE to use the touchscreen for certain functions and commands. I know that you have to for the camera settings, etc but what else?

3. I've heard, and read, that when taking photos and videos, it can sometimes take a long period of time to save the image, and before you can take another one. In some cases I've heard of it taking up to 10 seconds on an 8GB memory card?

4. With regards to the memory card, I've heard that it tries to update the media everytime you go into the media menu, which slows down the phone for a period of time.

5. Are you able to use the old style media menu (like the one on the W995) when the slider is shut?

6. What sort of things are you restricted to when the slider is closed (i.e new style media menu, etc)

7. One of my main concerns is the video playback. I'm aware that the videos can be converted using the Media Go service, which I assumes automatically converts it to the right screensize, etc. What I'm concerned about is that I have a lot of videos off my old phones, and on my PC that I'd be looking to move to the phone, and I'm concerned that with the unusual screen resolution that the videos might appear distorted or 'stretched'. Is anyone able to confirm this?

Sorry for all the questions, just want to make sure that I'm not going to have more problems with the phone than what it's worth!

For those of you who aren't entirely happy I just have to ask, is there EVER any new device anywhere that has no trouble at all? Secondly people here who are contemplating to buy one need to remember that the people who post here does not represent the majority, most people probably feels happy with their phone.

Posted by mediar
I don't worry that Aino has some bugs. I'm sure there are updates ahead, which will fix most of them. This is one of SE's most importent phones for 2009, so I believe they won't neglect Aino.

Personally i feel SE just doesn't care about its customers, fair enough some devices have bugs at the beginning, but the aino should not have any, why? It took SE 5 months to release this device (which still isn't available on any networks here), in that time the device should have been given numerous firmware updates which should have tackled all bugs. Most manufactures take 1-3 months to release a device, SE take 5months and in that time it is perfectley acceptable to expect no bugs at all. Why release a device that is full of bugs? The bugs aren't small either, touch screen freezing, extremely laggy menus, slow camera etc.

Also you say that that "does not represent the majority", well if a main website (magazine) has given the aino a poor review there has to be a problem, as they will have recieved pleanty of these devices to test to see if there are any bugs etc.

The W995 didn't have any bugs on release so far 99.99% of people are extremely happy with there purchase.

I have a feeling that SE realise there are problems with the aino, as the Aino has dissapeared from Phones 4 u stores and is no longer listed to buy on there website. So far no operaters (in the UK) are selling the Aino only the CPW, perhaps that is why the aino is taking so long to be released here.

The W995 was pretty similar OS wise to previous releases.

Aino represents somewhat of a new direction as the Touch part of the UI has never been implemented to such an extent on an A200 phone before.

I hope all the issues are ironed out with the next update though as it is a nice looking capable phone - a200 has a lot of fans.

It strange because I've had my Satio for a couple of days now and I'm experiencing nothing of the bugs I've read on some other threads so each to their own I guess.

To those who have the (EU ver.) Aino, does it display Chinese/Japanese/Korean?

wikipedia's startpage would be a good way of checking.

White available 6-11-'09
Should I take black or skip to Rachael

Posted by vegetaleb
The Aino is a beauty in white only, it looks like the phone of Obi 1 Kenobi
Anyway doest it have new apps compared to A2? Meaning new weather app or Home Tracker (like on Satio)

Posted by hihihans
Yep, it's stunning. I just got sick of waiting. I can get black everywhere, but white is just not here. I won't take Rachael , she's to big for me. so I'll wait another 2 weeks and judge it, if it will fill my needs. Think so

At least you know when its going to come out, god knows when the aino will be released in the Uk, i quite like the look of the aino but if SE take too long its Satio all the way.

I'll stick to Aino. checked some other brands this morning. I'll wait.

Wait for white.

Definitely wait for the white. It is stunning. Having seen images of the black, and seen my white Aino, I'm glad I went for the white. When I get a chance I'll get some photos up.

Feel free to ask an questions and I'll try to answer them.

Posted by hihihans
Yep, I will. no questions yet.

Had Aino (black) in my hands today, it felt firm and solid, even familiar.
Had Satio in my hands too, didn't feel as good as I'm used from

Didn't feel Aino yet, but my Satio felt great But maybe that is partly because it was a non-glossy proto....

Alright, here's some white Aino images for you guys:

And finally, a family size and screen comparison I guess:

Nobody seems to have a straight answer to this question of mine so I hope you do:

Does it have Clear Bass or Megabass?

I've always naturally assumed Clear Bass but there are clearly some conflicting documentation out there. TIA

It has Clear Bass. In Equaliser it has 9 different settings which are Treble, Heavy, Pop, Jazz, Normal, Unique, Soul, Easy and Bass. All of these have the 'Clear Bass' logo lit up apart from Normal and Treble.

While in the Equaliser menu, pressing the left softkey (Manual) allows you to make a custom equaliser setting. It gives you the five equaliser bars, plus a single 'Clear Bass' bar. You can choose to have Clear Bass on one of four settings. The rest of the equaliser is standard fare.

Ah, such clear and comprehensive from you M-O, thanks! There's even a mention of Megabass in the white paper so what was I to believe? Nothing like clarification from the horse's mouth

How bassy is it on top Clear Bass Setting?

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
@Mode: No problem. I think I remember seeing a similar set-up on screenshots of the W995.

Interestingly I just tried out Remote Play with my PS3 and Aino. Very very impressed. Initially I thought it wasn't as good as on the PSP, but I just tried out my PSP and it was actually more laggy on the PSP and playback of music skipped where on Aino it sounded perfect.

I will add that Aino's image quality during remote play has a bit more noise than the PSP. The level of noise is like what you'd expect when watching a streamed movie clip. Movie playback is fine though and watching a blu-ray certainly wouldn't be affected by this slight amount of noise.

How bassy? It is impossible to give a clear answer to that because I can't measure bass. But rest assured it is very bassy. Sony Ericsson phones in my opinion are very good for bassy music and Aino is no exception.

No problem at all. And I'm happy to answer any questions anyone might have related to Aino.

@ Muhammad-Oli

What color does the keypad light up? Do you happen to have shots of that?

Thanks in advance.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
It lights up white. I don't have a picture of that unfortunately but I did find this on GSMArena:

It does light up a bit better than that on my one, so I'll assume GSMArena's was like that due to it being a prototype.

Posted by makato
I'm guessing the purplish blue color was just for demo? I saw a video on youtube that showed it with a different color than white : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ba5lNEeqENM .Its around three minutes.

Posted by Platia1
Thanks for the answers so far, your answer for the bass was the kinda thing I was looking for

A few more questions if you can answer them

1. Do microSD's aside from Sandisk ones work OK? I'd assume so but the SE Press Release was very specific about Sandisk cards (I thought it would be marketing crap though)

2. Does the Aino have the ability to Shuffle a Playlist? My current Nokia 5800 XpressMusic can but pretty much every other device (not neccessarily a phone) that I have used can't, including a Sony PS3

3. I found out that you can fast forward through music by touching the progress bar in touch media mode. If you have a really long file such as a Podcast or a DJ Set does it get laggy (ie take a while to fast forward)? My 5800 XpressMusic lags on everything apart from WMA files and its fairly annoying.

Yeah that must have been for a few prototypes only. My white Aino is a proper production model and has white keypad lighting, the same as GSMArena's prototype had.

1. All MicroSD cards will work, I bet Sony has a contract with Sandisk that they need to fulfill and mentioning their name will be a part of it. Just watch you don't buy a fake branded MicroSD or a very very cheap one because they are notorious for becoming corrupted.

2 & 3. Unfortunately I have no playlists or lengthy media files on mine just yet, so I can't test this right now.
Perhaps someone else will help you but if not, I will try to tomorrow if I get a chance.

With the two to three minute long music files I currently have on mine, touching the progress bar to fast forward is completely instant so I doubt there will be any problems, but I will try to find out anyway. The touchscreen side of the phone is very responsive and fast.

That's great Goldenface. Were you not too happy with your Satio? I'm glad you liked the pictures.

@Platia1: I'm currently bluetoothing a 58 minute long podcast over to my Aino to test out the touch progress bar responsiveness. I won't be able to test playlists until I'm on my Windows computer though, as I'm currently on my Mac.

EDIT: Ok I just read below that playlists can be made on the fly. I never really use playlists so didn't know.

@platia1
I've not had any trouble shuffling playlists on my Aino. You have to create playlists through the 'old' A200 media browser though, you can't do it through the newer, landscape, touch-enabled media browser.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
@Platia1: Ok I can confirm that touching the progress bar to fast forward and rewind is very good too. Listening to the 58 minute long Hospital Records podcast it never lagged once while I was purposely trying to make it do so. I was selecting different times backwards and forwards through the recording as quickly as I could and it never once paused to try to catch up. Playback was instant.
