This thread is a run off from the "Dont post your packages on friday 13th! it isnt lucky!" Read below I need your help on what to do...

The royal mail have admitted after 5 days (ment to be 15 working days) that its lost and i can submit my claim.

My problem is that i want to get £400 from the insurance but i only paid £320 for the phone over ebay. how would i explain that I CANNOT get another phone for that price and i want the £400. I know its cheeky but worth it? credit crunch and all?

I think if i think up some plan i could get this money because on the Sony ericsson store the price is £399.99 http://www.se-store.co.uk/ind[....]6C24245849FEBF&type=Sim%20Free

any ideas please share!

looking forward to your reply

I would think RM needs a proof of purchase before paying out.

You can try and tell them you lost it but that won't do your case good, I assume you bought it new from ebay. I give it little chance they will pay you 400 because that is the price on Sony Ericcsons website, they will pay whatever you paid for it (if you're lucky) and probably only with proof of purchase.

Do what i did.Print off the page showing the phone and price. Get 3 examples and send them along with your claim form as proof. The only problem is that if you specified the value of contents you will only get that amount.

I havent yet told them how much its worth i've filled out the general information and left value blank. Im thinking i could say i bought it off a friend for a cheap price and show them Play.com Se-store.com as examples of price. Do you know any other people who sell it for 400 and above? ooo just a thought would it help to get actual quotes off phone shops instead like o2, phones4u

it might help. the more supporting evidence the better. you did send it special delivery didn't you ? if you only sent it recorded delivery the maximum you'll receive is £38.

true, recorded post has no value £38 is all you would get

RMSD is a different ball game.

Lets hope RM doesn't find this thread. Personally I think you should just claim back what you lose and not try to make a profit out of it. But that's just me I guess.

Ooh thats bad i had a courier years ago about to deliver an expensive Nokia phone. Turns out someone stole it at the depot. I had to show them actual reciept my actual proof to claim not just something showing the price. Thats bad luck that.

From RM's website: You can also claim compensation for loss or damage in writing within 12 months of posting, as long as you include your proof of purchase receipt.

Everything seems to point at proof of purchase required'

i'm sure a paypal/bank statement should do for the proof of purchase for the phone

Posted by golemsmate
yup it will but it shows i bought the phone for £320 and i want to get myself a HTC Touch so the more the better I think its a good idea, whether it'll work or not i dont know

Posted by blerk
Just a general pro-tip, never send your original proof of purchase when you need to send items for repair, send a copy, you should also make a copy for your own account of course. I would claim back the 320 as that's easy for you to proof. The other 80 quid you can get in different ways; saving up, not buying beer for a few weeks, etc, etc

Posted by golemsmate
hehe ye ill try this one and if not ill make another, lower claim dad made me try the 400 so that'll be my excuse i would save but interest rates being 0.5% i'd be saving a while

just a word of warning... this is classed as INSURANCE FRAUD and carries a prison sentence if found out...

is £80 really worth the chance of prison if found out?

Posted by golemsmate
it isnt really? I need the money to buy the phone again from a reputable retailer.

Posted by voda_jon
it is classed as insurance fraud as you are claiming for the cost of the handset you bought. if u bought it for £320 u should claim for £320 as thats the purchase price u paid. if u claim for more you are basically committing fraud as you didnt pay that much.

IF they word the form you fill in to say how much is the REPLACEMENT cost then you would be ok but from what i can remember its what you purchased it for they will replace.

You mean you need all the money to buy a HTC Touch. And as voda_jon says, it is fraud.

On the claim form it asks you to state the total value of the contents. It doesn't ask what YOU paid for the phone. Therefore. If you paid for something at a promotional rate and it's price has since changed and gone up in price. You should state the actu

You guys were makin me worry I dunno eat will happen but in about a month I'll get back 2 u

Posted by blerk
I think the big question is, could you buy a replacement for 320 or not?

If yes, claim 320 and buy a new one.
If no, claim whatever it costs for a replacement, and explain to RM you got it at a discounted rate as stated earlier in this thread. This way you cover yourself.

80 quid is definitely not worth getting a record for, or is it?

Posted by golemsmate
I could probably get one off eBay or here but if I'm gonna get another 1 I don't want 1 that breaks 2 times in a couple of months

Posted by golemsmate
I've looked through the terms and conditions of applying and the MINIMUM requirements say nothing about proof of purchase. They do say they want evidence of the value though

" Evidence of the item’s value (for loss, part loss & damage claims only) 4"

but they can look into how much is being paid and change it

"Royal Mail will take in to account any findings and the compensation policy for the product used to determine how much, if any payment is due."

So i have done NOTHING wrong. just to clear it up
