Hi all
Today I just came to know about very sad news for all SE fanboys include my self when I read on "gsmarena.com" that SE got 5th place globally instead of getting better the LG whom are newer then SE in mobile industry but at last ranked 3rd globally and one day they Samsung and Nokia as well. What I think the main problem for SE is its high price.Although phones are better then LG and others industries although especially in term of battery as well in features but the price is the main reason backing SE to ages. Hope SE now learned much and they may now bulid the best phones all rounder and will gain it position again.

*Sigh* SE never learns.

Posted by jj03
i'm sure se will sort there shit out. . Tho i gota say, i dont think se are better than others when it comes to hardware or features...far from it. But then, like you say, your a fanboy, so i didnt expect anything impartial. That would be ridiculous on a se themed site lol.

Posted by echo.shane
i'm kinda disappointed but at least they came in the top 5

there are several things wrong with that.

-SE are MASSIVELY overpriced for what they offer, and especially for the shoddiness of their 'quality'
-LG are offering phones that are not just better in features, reliability of software, and quality of build, but are also being offered at a cheaper price that SE
-SE need to do something about their lack of quality (ie lack of build quality and bugginess of their handsets which has plagued them consistatly throughout the years)
-SE need to do something about their tediously samey designs
-SE need to think of some fresh ideas instead of carrying on with the same tired cybershots and walkmans. people are way too bored f that now. neither their cameras nor their music players are seen as being the best in the eyes of the general public

Dont suppose i could interest you in my W890 Sparky

Yes..SE never learns ...till they destroy all partnership BTW Sony and ericsson and lose all fans...

Posted by enk39
Well even if it's still top 5 i can only name 5 big companies: nokia, samsung, lg, motorola and SE. So it's at the bottom of the companies that matter. although i have to ask is moto seriously 4th, or is there some other company wedged in there?
Ah well hope things start getting better soon

Yeah, but that difference is really small. One succesfull phone could change that.

Doesn't change that SE is doing bad, obviously, but they are not really much worse than Moto and LG.

Posted by julias
Its really sad for SE to come down so much, fortunately i have moved on now to the iphone and i'm very happy.

the difference is small at this stage, but the main point here is that the trend in the direction that moto and SE are going (ie down) is opposite to that of LG(ie up)

Are SE going to be 'Motorola"..........? its really horrible.
Wakeup SE ... its time to open ur eyes as well as ur minds too but plz close ur pockets. U've already gained much profit. Its time to relief ur customers with low price handsets.

People! Why are you so conscious about ranking?!

Posted by se_dude
Guys. Looking through the broader scenario, SE has done really well in the 2nd half of 2008. When recession has built in, it has kept its stand from the previous quarter. Moto though has sold almost 100 million handsets this year have only sold 19 million in Q4. LG holds the same scenario. Thus Its advantage SE in H2 2008, but H1 2008 really sealed the deal. So we should be happy that SE is actually moving forward with their enterprise rather than looking at their year to year position.

Posted by c96sthl
se_dude.... agreed.
but LG shipped 25.7million in q4 so they are not doing really bad in q4. Only SE and Motorola ... not sure how Nokia is doing ...or Samsung but no matter how bad...that two company should have volume that secure no1 and 2 spot.

but as SE over took Motorola since Q3....let see how this two "old" giant continue to perform in 2009

Industry rankings tend to be based on quarterly figures not annual ones. What are the figures for Q4 2008? Right now SE probably stands at No 3. Who cares where they stand? We want QUALITY not truck loads of absolute crap.

LG have slim advantage on shipment over SE.

normally Q1 is strong for LG thru out the last few yrs...so honestly...I don't feel positive for our favourite brand during Q1 09....more over with the economy situation.

Posted by se_dude
I dont think LG revealed their Q4 results yet, or did they??

Posted by goldenface
I would actually prefer it if they sold less phones and concentrated on bringing that back that 'Wow' factor that we haven't seen in a while. Ultimately, its profits that count not sales.

Well yea, the results are revealed. But LG themselves have surged to a huge loss.

Posted by eaniban
i always thought of those S$65 LG phones sold in 7-11 outlets. of course many will buy them and it will add up to the 100million phones sold by LG. It would really make a big difference in LG's sales VS that of SE's. so I do not really make a big fuss out of it. but still SE should do something to increase its sales.

Well, it could have been worse ! Alcatel is not far behind Give it another quarter or 2 of the same bad results and . . .

Nothing is wrong at this moment, did you guys read the Q4 report from Nokia?? then you will be surprised..

So SE is not the only one

Posted by strizlow800
Well every company has successes and downfalls... Hope it will be better soon.

Posted by bavlondon2
I think the only saving grace for SE is that it is involved in the Symbian Foundation project. Hopefully with some fresh new harware they can improve on their current position.

Unlucky
And who ever said it was a tie between 3rd 4th and 5th can dream on
Mario
LMAO! you just love taking the piss out of these okes hey.

hope SE goes 7-8 if they continue with the copy-paste phones. LG is innovating SE doesn't deserve 3rd place

why do people say things like this???

SE has has not done well. SE, LG, nokia, samsung, and moto all inhabit the same planet earth where they have ALL been subject to exactly the same financial pressures.

you make it sound as if the rest live in a vacuum, and only SE has been subject to financial pressure.

SE is going the same way as moto if there isn't a change in their tactics.........down down down.

Lol why?

Anyways, I personally thought SE would get the 3rd place.

But if you think about it, they should be HAPPY with the 5th place. I haven't seen one phone with the WOW-factor. For example the N95 is still a very good mobile and beats most of the new SE phones!

Posted by c96sthl
nokia shipment go down.... samsung shipment go up but their profit down 69% sequentially.....LG shipment up...profit i didn't read all.... SE shipment down sequentially and profit also down.

motorola...well no need to read its quarter report since when they announced trimming 4k of their mobile phone division employees...they have claimed they only ship 19million which is less than q3.

i hope it won't trigger to that everyone stop being innovative.....since even intel is suffering now.

LG have posted a record Q4 loss of 690 million dollars.

And its only the past week that SE have beaten them. And anyway, SE's average selling price is way above their competitors. Its because of SE's high end strategy have they declined in this quarter.

In india atleast, the only highend that is selling is the C905. Just bought it a couple of days back. Even the owner of the shop uses one.

the Q4 loss of LG electronics has to be put into context - a big chunk came from to subsidiaries involved in LCD displays :

"A bright spot for the company, which also makes household appliances and personal computers, was an 8 percent increase in shipments of mobile phones to 25.7 million, LG said in a release. That pushed its 2008 handset sales to a record 100.7 million, up from 80.5 million in 2007.

Earnings were hurt by 294 billion won of equity-accounted losses from overseas subsidiaries and affiliates, including 214 billion won from flat panel manufacturer LG Display Co., which is 37.9 percent owned by LG."

Mobiles, appliances & PC's had a strong showing - these are probably the only divisions which won't be restructured.

Not according to the estimates.

Posted by carkitter
2007 was a massive year for SE handset sales allowing SE to reach 100 million sales for the first time and now, heading into a serious recession on top of a shift in sales away from SE's niche, 2008 sales are 96.6 million - down only 3.5%. In the current market conditions I'd be satisfied with that but looking for SE to do better in 2009.

The signs are good for SE with better featured phones such as + AF in the W902; a N95 competitor at last in the C905; Wifi in the mid range -G705, W705/W715; dabling with different platforms - WM, Symbian Foundation and Open Handset Alliance; Clear Audio and Clear bass restoring faith in the lineup and fewer low end phones to restore the prestige and profitability of the brand.

The trouble is, anyone who's had a iPhone 3G is gonna have trouble going back to a SE phone until SE get a multi-touch screen and some decent downloadable apps. The first can be sorted with some hard work but the second really relies on WM/SF/Android becoming a viable alternative to the rich comsumer experience the iPhone platform enjoys. Let's face it, Apple changed everything and the future is smartphones but not the oddball smartphones of the past. I'm looking forward to the smartphones SE is planning for 2010 release, that's when we should really see some serious upward movement in SE sales.

SE was third, according Strategy Analytic . Nokia 38.4, Smasung 17.9 LG 8.7 SE. 82. and Motorola 84, and others plus apple 20.3%

For Q4 your figures are correct, but I think 5:th place discussed is on year basis. However, it seems Moto is rolling downhills faster than SE, so the 4:th place on year basis for SE does not seem too far away.

The numbers you have correctly posted do not show them as 'third' ! Is it safe to assume, you are confusing your self ? (motorola 8.4 and se 8.2)

SE should stop labeling low-end products as Cyber-shot and Walkman phones; it's no wonder that SONY refused to let SE use the PSP brand seeing how low-key all those phones are. For me the only phones that are worth their price are those that start with a 7 on their name with the current naming convention and upwards. But the 9's series are too pricey, with the only exception being W902. A very underrated phone.

Posted by se_dude
Eldar once wrote in a review, that SE are going on a total restructuring and that prices would cme down from the mid of this year.
