Desktop. Laptop. Pocket: The era of the personal Internet dawns with the Nokia N97
Tilting touch display, QWERTY keyboard and personalized home screen - a true mobile computer
Barcelona, Spain - Nokia today unveiled the Nokia N97, the world's most advanced mobile computer, which will transform the way people connect to the Internet and to each other. Designed for the needs of Internet-savvy consumers, the Nokia N97 combines a large 3.5" touch display with a full QWERTY keyboard, providing an 'always open' window to favorite social networking sites and Internet destinations. Nokia's flagship Nseries device introduces leading technology - including multiple sensors, memory, processing power and connection speeds - for people to create a personal Internet and share their 'social location.'
"From the desktop to the laptop and now to your pocket, the Nokia N97 is the most powerful, multi-sensory mobile computer in existence," said Jonas Geust, Vice President, heading Nokia Nseries. "Together with the Ovi services announced today, the Nokia N97 mobile computer adjusts to the world around us, helping stay connected to the people and things that matter most. With the Nokia N97, Nseries leads the charge in helping to transform the Internet into your Internet".
Sensing your 'So-Lo'
The Nokia N97 introduces the concept of 'social location'. With integrated A-GPS sensors and an electronic compass, the Nokia N97 mobile computer intuitively understands where it is. The Nokia N97 makes it easy to update social networks automatically with real-time information, giving approved friends the ability to update their 'status' and share their 'social location' as well as related pictures or videos.
Widescreen - Internet and entertainment
The home screen of the Nokia N97 mobile computer features the people, content and media that matter the most. Friends, social networks and news are available by simply touching the home screen. The 16:9 widescreen display can be fully personalized with frequently updated widgets of favorite web services and social networking sites. The Nokia N97 is also perfectly suited for browsing the web, streaming Flash videos or playing games. Both the physical QWERTY and virtual touch input ensure efficiency in blogging, chatting, posting, sending texts or emailing.
The Nokia N97 supports up to 48 GB of storage, including 32 GB of on-board memory, expandable with a 16 GB microSD card for music, media and more. This is complemented by excellent music capabilities, full support for the Nokia Music Store and continuous playback time of up to 1.5 days. The Nokia N97 also has a 5-Megapixel camera with high-quality Carl Zeiss optics, 16:9 and DVD quality video capture, and support for services like Share on Ovi for immediate sharing over HSDPA and WLAN.
The Nokia N97 is expected to begin shipping in the first half of 2009 at an estimated retail price of EUR 550 before taxes or subsidies.

What on EARTH has gone wrong with Nokia? Great device, but this should be the E91, not the N97, the N9x series (apart from the N91) has always been about imaging, look how the N95 shook up the market, all this is going to do is either confuse people or make them buy it because its the N96 replacement.
You kind of get the feeling Nokia are under pressure to release a replacement to the N96 quickly because it was a warmed over N95, but they've improved the wrong things. I know the 5MP camera Nokia use is fantastic, and better than alot of 8MP camera phones, but the public don't care about that, they see 'the bigger the number the better it is', so they'll go elsewhere.
Posted by razec
Daedalus85: you're wrong if you are saying all nokia 5mps are fantastic. just look how awful n79/n85 and n96 cameras are. i just hope they have used OMAP chips this time. its a shame that they almost downgrade the great hardware that nokia users have enjoyed since n93-n82. also they really need to be more innovative with their designs. their new flagship looks like a 5800 with n79 colors in a tytn II esque sliding mechanism.

I'm getting one. I think.

the N97 looks attractive but i am not sure whether i wanna get it next year as i have got the X1 now! X1 serve me well and I can read chinese web page on it but I can download software to read chinese on symbian phones though!

Looks like a cross between the Nokia 5800 and HTC TYTN II.
Good specs.

This is realy exciting! I had a chance to play on a production unit 5800xm a few days ago and although im not a fan of TS i love this new S60v5 UI, its so fresh and the 640x360 res display is amazing. This will not confuse anyone, this is clearly a Nseries, its completely aimed at Multimedia, i realy hope its using a OMAP2430 or OMAP3 chip. By the way Dogmann the Freescale CPU being used in the N79, N85 etc. . .also handles VGA 30FPS video but not as well as the OMAP2420 did with its PowerVR MBX GPU. If i can and thats a big IF il get the N97 late next year.

wow this looks some piece of kit, spec wise very good but i think it maybe a bit chunky for my needs. Might be pleasently suprised when/if i see it the flesh though?
I think this is aimed about right though, with the previous N95/N96 all about internet/video/multimedia/connectivity etc this sits nicely as a logical progression.
Think the touchscreen imaging centric phone would be more likely to be seen in an N8* series (xenon flash/non slide qwerty etc) if Nokia are following the trend.
All in all very excited about this new release though

I like the way it says ships H1 2009. Thats anywhere between 1st Jan and 31st June. Couldnt they have narrowed it down a bit.

Nokia is getting desperate for "MOAR!!!"
Of course, they use Carl Zeiss Vario Tessar which is also used by Sony Cyber-Shot cameras, so when Nokia tries an 8 MP, Nokia will get sued by Sony... WIN!
#2: Nokia N97 has silver and black colors, like SE's first Xperia Win-Mo powered device, X1.
#3:In GSMArena, X1 is rated as the most rates and viewed, so Nokia wants to defeat this title.
#4: Nokia taunted Engadget that they didn't post about this phone -- exactly, it was leaked last month. =P
#5: They do have a 5MP camera which X1 doesn't have. But X1 has greater resolution which is WVGA 800x480 than N97's almost VGA 640x360. X1 is a true WIDESCREEN phone.
#6: Nokia is jealous of SE, Samsung and LG.
#7: I bet my C902 can defeat N97 when taking pictures..
#8: Nokia can't make their own cameras -- only until CIF.. Lol!
#9: HSDPA 3.6MBPS? Puh-leez. Xperia has that speed. Maybe even 7.2MBPS..
#10: And almost N97 is heaver than X1.
#11: N97 has a a 3.5inch screen like an iPhone.
-- What's next? N98, N99, then N100? How stewpeed.

only problem in all that is that windows mobile is uttetr CRAP (IMO)
n97 is an amazing device...Nokia puts SE to shame. SE had the lead on touch screen technology, but now all is lost...they are folowers...

Are you plankgatan in disguise?
I think argument #6 holds the most weight cause i've just been on the official nokia site & there is a HUGE message (you can't miss it) that states.
We have released the N97 because we are jealous of SE, Samsung & LG.

I really don't think tis should have been labeled the n97 it just doesn't fit in with the previous range.
Looks more like a business / consumer device and they never work out well. Its either on or the other not both.
Mind you, i'm sure it'll sell like hot cakes to people who don't need it.

Assuming it has similar hardware as 5800,They are still using the freescale platform.
I can only think that integration between hardware and os is much tighter than ever before with S60 5th Edition.
and 48gigs!
Another important pointer is that, there is another device coming soon that will be focused on imaging.

Considering the X1 has better specs than this thing. How does it eat the X1 for breakfast??
Upsides of the N97 are 5 mp cam and a 3.5 inch display(with a pathetically low resolution) and maybe 32gb rom.

I know but anything highend from SE or Nokia that will be announced in MWC will most likely come out in fall or winter 09 but I need a multimedia oriented device before July.
I'm hoping that they can bring out the N97 in that time.
I might reconsider if those upcoming phones introduce sometotally new technology.

well all i have to say is nokia has carefully analyzed the market situation and come out with excellent device,Unlike xperia which had several revision both in ram and software from early February, with long development process, which was the only high end smart phone product in SE 2008 Line up
Built in memory of 400 Mb on a multimedia device was a really great mistake done by SE, Here Nokia clearly understand the need for bigger inbuilt memory and had taken brilliant decision of putting 32 Gb memory with opportunity to expand the memory to another 32 Gb. It makes better multimedia device than so called xperia
Brilliant Tilt screen compared to Xperia which was very over hyped for its Curvy/Tilted Design, In this case Nokia has done brilliantly so that u can put ur phone on desk and us it as desktop without having to hold it everytime
A 3.5 Inch Wides screen display with 16 Million colours.A 5mp camera with Dual led xeon flash & Vga Recording -Mpeg4 (which was very Poorly implemented in xperia in 3gp standards, with horrible quality, And one could not excuse the mediocre 3,2 mp camera of xperia which even disappointed greatly during daylight )
And Proximity sensor which switches of the screen during calls.
And one could forgive the recent complaints from the SE users, regarding the low ring volume & poor call quality And SE doesn't make no exception with xperia either.Once again Nokia had done very well here with stereo speakers & also in many of there N and E Series Phones. So that no matter wherever u are , u never miss a call.
Combined to all these the biggest concern of SE and other prospective users was, How good is SE with Windows mobile.WM has many negative feedback among user, which includes complexity and ease of use which had set back .
Here again Nokia has done brilliantly by using symbian s60 os, Familiar around the world with nearly 50 percent market share.
Adding to the equation SE has had a heritage of using slower processors compared to other manufacturers which had led to serious complains among SE user due to their initial a2 platform phones such as w910 & k850.And they were incompetent with their own uiq platform which started with P990 and ended with P1 and G900, Combined with slower process and lesser rams. This another reason which had put many user think twice about getting xperia, which always had weak processors and limited ram .Unlike Nokia which had dealt with the ram issues by providing additional ram and demand paging from N82 and n95 ownwards.Combined with all these the high price of SE X1 puts many to desire.
Overall a well thought out device from Nokia.Understanding the multimedia market Segment. Almost having every Feature a Multimedia Phone needs to have, and having it to the maximum, without compromising on any features , will definitely excite & thrill multimedia users .

Goof-ups from Nokia:
1. The joystick/d-pad on the keyboard is on the left side. What a dumb move! Anyone who's used the E90 or the Communicators will know what I'm talking about.
2. Tiny space bar in the bottom-right corner. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Nokia?!?
3. Where's the app store?? Nokia can't expect this device to take on the might of Apple and the iPhone with something that doesn't have a dedicated app store.
4. The N97 does not seem to have the latest iteration of Nokia Maps (v3.0).
5. No mention of a dedicated graphics chip. Has Nokia killed the N95's line of successors?

Crap VGA display (doesn't beat the X1 and Touch HD) and a small-ish screen - where are the so called "maximum" features, eh Mr. "Technical Expert"?

All I can really hope for is SE to move quickly towards a touch screen S60 phone. This however is brilliant, yes it doesn't have everything but looking a t its two main competitors the iPhone and G1 its very very good.
Sure it doesn't have the screen of an X1 or TouchHD but is the screen EVERYTHING?
When SE has a S60 phone then we can start comparing apples and apples. Till then WinMo will stay WinMo and never looks to gun for the mainstream. Of course I'd love to see a touch screen INNOV8. And even better if something like that were to come from SE.
But really for now its just wow and nobody can say anything bad about 32GB of built in memory.

I have zero experience using a qwerty interface on a phone but I do agree the positioning of the space bar does seem very questionable.
Posted by SloopJohnB
The Big screen, the sliding keyboard and the big HD is what this device is really all about. I'm a bit concerned about the UI since it will be hard to control the device using just one hand.By watching the video the system takes a few secs to open menus or redraw graphics, add that to having to tap every menu twice and u may end up having a "slow" experience. The desing resembles the iPhone too much with the black color and the silver bezel, there's nothing wrong with it but nokia could've tryed something different here. The lack of an app store, multitouch, iTunes, a friendly GUI and a smaller price won't make this threat to the iPhone. This device will probably steal sales from xperia, htc and samsung since it's got great hardware and software and a very strong brand behind it.

N97 is not meant to go against X1, thats the E90s job, and when looking at a E90 next to a X1 i dont see much diff, except for Touchscreen in X1.
Whats so bad about the 640x360 res? Have you actualy used a 5800xm? The 640x360 res makes for an amazing display, i used it a few days ago, its a stunning display, the N97 screen is only 0.3inchs larger so im sure quality will still be around the same. All in all the N97 is a welcome edition to the Nseries ,i see nothing wrong with the dpad being on the left, and YES ive used a E90 heavily, even if the dpad was on the left it would be fine IMO.

As is its processor??????
Posted by Muhammad-Oli
I see no problem with the directional keys being on the left either. Can people not use their left hand for simple tasks? Quite often I even favour my left hand for texting even though I am right-handed, and I swap hands when the other gets tired. Honestly, its like a gaming controller where the directional buttons are always on the left.
The only thing I see that might take a little bit of getting used to is the space-bar positioning where it is rather small and over to the right. It may take some getting used to at first especially when attempting to press it without looking.

Well, n97 really is a nice device, and i see no point in arguing with the screen resolution, however, I dont like its shape much and after having my n96, i wont wanna buy another nokia soon, and seeing the demonstration videos, its putting me off...I see frequent lags in it and if its like n96, its gonna be so obsolete.
