My name is Samuel. I joined Esato today although I used 2 read the RSS feed on daily basis.
I want to get more explanations on the following issues:
1. Pls,anyone tell me which one is better between Sony Ericsson P1i and Nokia N78.
2. What is the difference between wifi 802.11b and 802.11b/g UPnP.
Thanks so much.
(I'm using SE K800i presently).

Wifi B G and etc are different frequentions or ways to connect to the internet... They differ in speed and the way of connecting. Anyway if that is not a obstacle for you, you can go for the P1 as I think it offers much more features compared to N78...

1. Its basically your choice, n78 is faster while p1i has touch screen and qwerty. Theres more software availability for s60 of n78 than uiq of p1i. since i like touchscreen i would have bought p1i. N also, i dont like the buttons of n78.

2. Wifi b& g are different wireless network speeds.
wifi b which the p1i has is just the transfer speeds upto 11mbps while the wifi g suppots upto 54mbps and its the newer version than wifi b(also there is wifi n which is the latest).

So basically, if suppose your wireless router was set only to wifi g . then only n78 would work on it but not p1i, but if your router was set on wifi b/g, then even p1 would connect to it(using b modE) and n78 would connect to it using g mode.

Upnp is just universal plug and play, almost every new device has that.

This is just extra, I have tested w960i(wifi b) vs n95 8gb,n96(wifi b/g), and from my experience , the wifi signal was higher in w960i than them.

Asᅠyou are coming from a K800, I suggest that you try them personaly first. They are very different UI-s and there is a big possibility that you might not like the way you move through menus or general layout on one or the other phone. My vote here would go to the P1 ( touchscreen, qwerty, jog dial ), but your decision should be based on your specific needs. Maybe if you tell us more about what you will be using it for in more detail, we could tell you our opinions that will be more relevant, than if we just told you what we think in general about them.

Thanks so much. What I really wanted in any of the phones is their wifi capability which is the primary purpose of changing my fone bcos I browse alot.
All other functions are secondary.
Thanks.

If that is the case, I can not recommend SE with certainty... UIQ3 phones are rather picky about which routers they will cooperate with, and the process of adding new WLAN account can be rather cumbersome depending on your luck ( after few years with P990, I think that luck has a lot to do with successful browsing with WLAN ).

I don't really know how is Nokia performing in this field, but would be glad to know for sure...

Thanks everyone for your reply especially theos, strizlow800 and djin. I really appreciate you guys contributions.
I will go for SE P1i and I will let you know as soon as I get it so that you guys can put me through. Thanks.

I would so go for the N78, its a lot newer, has more features, its still got loads of FW updates to improve it in terms of Wi-Fi, Web browsing etc. . . It even supports FlashLite3 in its default web browser. But if you just want SE then good luck with the P1

I think you should go for the P1,the phone is just amazing, brought mine a month ago since then my N73 has taken a back site, like you said you are more interesting in browsering go for the P1 and download opera mobile 9.5 or Ozone browser and you are good to go.

your welcome aasamuel, however, for browsing, the default p1i browser isnt good enough, so as its said by Jenova, get opea 9.5(which is awesome!!,but i think it still doesnt have flashlite3 support).

But, the web browser of Nokia's s60 is almost excellent and with the faster processor of n78, you might be having better web experience in n78(especially for youtube n such sites).

(but i prefer opera 9.5 over it anyway)

You are welcome and congratulations ! I would've made the same choice, if for nothing else, than for the touchscreen ( it is quite addictive in my case :) ). As others have mentioned, install new Opera 9.5 ( though I use Opera Mini most of the time. Just a matter of taste I guess... ) and two other essential pieces of software : Swiss Manager Pro ( task and memory managment ) by CPS ( you will find related thread in SYMBIAN section here ) and GDesk by Gary Leach ( this started as a standby screen replacement, but evolved into something MUCH more. It kept me using my P990 this long :). You can find more info on www.my-symbian.com , UIQ3 section of forums, just look for GDesk)

Good day everyone and thanks so much for your concerns.
One more question; for those that know little or more about SE P1i and N78, how is their browsing over wifi connection?
Your contrbution is essential please.

Browsing on the P1i using a WiFi connection is pretty fast and without any lags. I assume its the same on the N78 as well.
