Woolworths the high street chain has gone into administration following massive debt because of the current economic crisis. The high street chain has debts of over £385 million and has over 500 stores up and down the UK. Around 30,000 jobs are at risk with some closing now and the rest next year. I think this is really bad they have been going for 99 years and Woolworths do sell some good items including bargain mobile phones too.

i very nearly got a job with them
edit: does that mean a massive sale??

Something tells me getting a job in retail is a no no with the current status I wonder whats next
ive got till xmas to find a job cos im at the end of tether working for nothing,
I just hope it wasn't a waste considering the credit crunch is getting buisnesses up the butt
i'll be sad to see Woolys close down I remember going in there with me parents at a wee age till now

Yes its a shame its like so many old British companies going to the wall so sad. I dont know i might be wrong but ever since Labour came to power nothing but British jobs and UK industry is vanishing forever its scary. I know they are not to blame for the whole credit crisis but they are partly. But so many jobs and so much industry has gone or gone abroad since they came to power. Will never vote them again. Mind you im Irish but its bad over there now. My uncle cannot sell his house now.

that whole 2% of VAT makes me laugh when they decide to place it upright again it will be more like 20%
how the hell is 2% gonna make us wanna buy anyway?
might be ok if your buying a Plasma or sumat but below that it's a waste of space.
i'd like to see politicians live off min wage and see how they get on,
cos it's not fair they have £2k luxury
then when the UK goes down the pan they make us the consumers pay for it all!
Labour need to go Conservatives need to take bloomin over rant over!

Rich people make me sick. Carly Zucker said on tv OH NO THE CREDIT CRUNCH DOES NOT AFFECT ME. Yeah cos she is marrying a rich footballer Joe Cole. Makes me sick when people brag about money :@

My wife has worked for Woolies for 7 years and it's not looking good.

My local woolworths closed down and they had a massive sale. My family went to do some shopping without noticing there was a huge sale on, they bought alot of kids clothes and house hold goods, and the bill was only £16!!! as I worked it out there was around £80 saving!!
Posted by goldenface
Shame its closing down, it is a national institution. The UK's 1st Woollies was in Liverpool and the store used to be huge.
I'll go there on Friday for one last shop I think.

My first stop for sweets, DVD,s kids toys etc, terrible shame!!
Posted by goldenface
There could be light at the end of the tunnel as more interest is being shown in rescuing the store.

we have woolworth's in Sydney too, and around Australia apparantly though I've only seen them in Sydney myself.
Its been around nearly as long as the UK one, but reading this wiki entry, I'm not sure there is any relation between them

There's Woolworths in NZ too, and I remember going to a Woolworths on one of Sydney's main streets a few years ago. I'm pretty sure there's no relation (anymore at least), because here they are only a supermarket and they are attached to several other supermarkets/food wholesalers, one of which my girlfriend works for so I think she'd know if something was up!

i think woolworths/safeway here though will be safe for a while to come. its probably our biggest supermarket chain in aus

My sister in law is from Wellington.

I heard today from my collegues that Woolworths in Australia is part of the Wal-Mart group, like Asda is over here. I'm guessing Woolworths UK (part of the Kingfisher group - Comet, B&Q, Woolworths), sold the right to Wal-Mart (US based company who branched out to Aus). So infact none of it is really Australian at all lol.

Safeway closed its doors years ago, infact Morissons took our store over and let just say there items are none to pleasing lol another that went was Kwik Safe, and I think Farmfoods will close its doors eventually to. MFI and Firkins are also in trouble, I wouldnt be surprised if Hmv closed cos the music sales is hyped big online.

I really wonder if someone will buy Woolworths to save it,
I recentley heard a few companys are intrested in buying some of the shops and some Guy of Dragons Den is making a bid or sumat!
Posted by jcwhite_uk
@Daedalus85
Woolworths has not been a part of Kingfisher for a few years now (neither has Comet). In the UK Kingfisher only owns B&Q, Screwfix and Trade Depot.
In 2001 Woolworths demerged from Kingfisher to become Woolworths Group PLC. KESA electricals (which Comet is part of)demerged from Kingfisher in 2003.

Ahh I see, thanks
Posted by masseur
apparantly Theo from Dragons Den is considering making an offer to take over Woolworths. I'm sure he'd make a good job of it too!

I laughed at the person who said "MFI has collapsed" - Shoddy manufacturing
Unfortunate but true... £3.4m of their profit was stock stolen from the stores...
Glad I never decided to pursue a career there.
Posted by Miss UK
they've been on watchdog heaps MFI no wonder there going lol! Btw Zavvi buys its Entertainment items from Woolworths depo and u cant order anything of there site cos of the collapse. Didnt know this till I was looking for a CD the weekend :s

Probably be Argos next. If you go into Argos on Boxing Day look at the size of the returns Q. Crazy. Im sure they give back all the money they made in the run up to Christmas. I think maybe in future they should reduce the 30 day money back on items not faulty. Surely they must lose alot of money.
Posted by Miss UK
Argos keep sending me discount emails everyday ive had to spam the suckers cos im not intrested who would be?
spend £100 and get £10 off or £50 and get £5 it's not worth it,
I got greater value off my iPod Touch from my catalogue
£169.99 to £147.00
Catalogues are proper crap but you can seriousley get bargains outta them
Posted by Bonovox
Dont like Argos. When i have bought things from them few times before the items have been previously sold or used. Was not happy. The items were marked and i think its cos of their returns policy.
Posted by Miss UK
Ive bought heaps of stuff from Argos,
there a very good reputable seller i'd rather woolworths went and kept Argos open cos they do have some serious electronics in there
talking of Woolies I popped in to them they have a really good sale on of CDs and DVDs £3 to £5 some are £1 I say get your skates on
I think a few phone shops need to close Phones4U has to go
and i could live without 02 sorry lol

Troubled Woolworths launches sale (BBC article)
Troubled retailer Woolworths, which crushed under its debt last month, has launched what its administrators have called the group's "biggest ever sale".
Posted by fatreg
time to get to wollies and get me some cheap music then!
Posted by Daedalus85
Yeah, don't get your car keys our just yet, popped down there today after hearing the news, and its UP TO 50%, ie all the shit stuff.
Games and Games Consoles, and DVDs from what I could see, where only 10% off, Xmas wrapping stuff was 30% off, chocolate stuff was only 10%, phones only 10% etc, and I don't think music was discounted that much.
The only stuff that was half price is their 'Worth It' range of cheap goods. Got myself an all-in-one pen knife type thing for £1.25 rather than £2.50
Posted by fatreg
I'll hold on to my horses then...

Im gutted its closed after tomorw, its a shock to see the store bare of items, but still kewl bargains got 4x cups and a hanger tingy for emm under a fiver
Posted by Bonovox
I wonder how much some of the mobiles will fall in price in Woolies.
