Personally i dont think its necessary. I only remove the memory card.
Better to be safe than sorry I suppose.

Lol I patch my phone with everything in there (memory card, sim card etc.)

I used to have problems patching if I left my SIM Card in, so I always took it out.

Yea, I always removed my sim some dude said you can mess up your Eroms like that forgot who though.
