X1 Build Quality Issues.

thought i'd start a thread for people to post any build quality problems they have noticed.

i have 2 problems - i hope i'm just really unlucky.

the silver paint on my right button under the screen has worn off completely and the plastic which covers the camera lens on the back is cracked.

the first point about the button i will put down to a manufacturing fault as the left key is still perfect wih the same use. However, the plastic covering the lens i can see is extremely thin now i can use the crack to guage its thickness - probably worth making sure you dont put any force on it...

oh, and i've had my x1 little over 3 days...

Someone else on another thread commented on Silver paint coming off. I have a Black X1, and have no build quality issues... so far .

Yeah that was me winging about my lack of silver paint, but i thought we could have a thread for generic build issues. Mods feel free to lock the previous thread.

I'm also not happy with the large gap between the top and bottom halves of the phone i.e. the screen half and the keyboard half, when they re closed, especially at the end where the hardbuttons are. Otherwise the phone feels nice and solid.

Mine is Vodafone, I've exchanged two handsets due to its fault (first one) and build qulity (2nd one). But the third one what i'm using now has the build qulity issues as well, the right top of the metal body is worn off, and some scartches on the left side. So I really doubt the qulity of the device which order through telephone-sales. Unfortunately, I cann't swap it once more because it's over 14 days. Anyway, I love it.

maybe not so soon - just been informed that they are out of stock - obviously...

Posted by hananta
mine is black, and my battery cover paint is very scratch magnet.. the paint is easily removed..

Posted by mobman
I'm going to have to hold on to mine for a little while longer - o2 have no stock - probably until the 1st of december. They sent me an email to contact returns again on monday. I notice they have just got the touch pro in stock - i bet they try to convince me to get that...

Mine is fine! No problems at all, build quality is great and the paint is still on.
One little annoying thing I have found though is that the screen is lowerd and dirt gets traped in the corners and is extremely hard to get it out.

Posted by ranywhere
i guess our faulty handsets were on the same production line. mine was made in 43rd week, what about yours?

Posted by WhyBe
They were training the "new guys" when your's were made

Posted by mobman
wk44 - but mines silver

its a shame because appart from these tiny faults I'm really happy - just be happier when o2 can get me a perfect handset I wonder whats causing the stock shortage...

@WhyBe
Dont worry, they should all know what there doing by the time you actually manage to get yours in America!

hey mobman,

I'm also looking to get a replacement from o2. Two things, first the charger i got just doesn't work. And secondly there are a few letters on the top row of the keyboard that make a really "clicky" noise, in particular letters R, T, Y and U. Does anyone elses x1 have these clicky keys? it just doesn't sound right compared to the rest of the keyboard.

Anyway, i rang o2 and like you said they are out of stock. Do you know if we are guaranteed replacement handsets because when i rang up, the women gave me the impression that because it would be over 14 days when they do finally get new stock, i wouldn't be able to get a replacement. Do you know what the o2 policy is on this?

edit: oh, i forgot to mention that i have a slightly loose battery cover

hmm... to be honest i simply assumed that as I had asked for a replacement because of a faulty handset that the 14 day cooling off period would not apply - it would be a warranty issue. Even if they were planning to swap it under their 14 day satisfaction procedure - its not exactly our fault that they have no stock and as we have raised our issues within 14 days I'm sure they would honour it.

The email that i was sent wasn't exactly comprehensive - just said ring back next week. Guess we'll see on Monday what they plan on doing for me...

I've had a silver and black X1s. The black one seems more sturdy - the silver one had a lose back cover (plastic covering lower half on the rear of the device). The keyboard keys on the black X1 also have better feedback then the silver unit I had. Otherwise no other problems with the finish or paint work.

Posted by Santa_Claus
I have silver one. No problems at all. Heavy usage all day long for 1 month. Perfect build quality.

Posted by mobman
i think i am just unlucky - but i do expect to see alot of people cracking the plastic covering the rear camera because it really is very thin! we'll see...

Posted by mobman
just read this on xda devs

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=447211

guess what - i have the same crack! Obviously. Definately worth having a look

oh, o2 kindly confermed that i will be able to arrange a swap once the x1 is back in stock. unfortunately this wont be until next week.

Hi guys, just let me show you my third exchange Xperia but still damaged phone from Vodafone UK!!!

Posted by originalas
Mine seems to be OK. I like the quality, all metal and rubber parts gives real Sony Style.

Hi guys,

New member here. Have been reading about that crack thing and have started to get worried. Was thinking of getting the X1 as I love it but now I am not sure . Maybe the problem is just with prototypes? Hope so...

Posted by mattiL
Most of us do not have prototypes, it's the real thing we use now.

Has anyone noticed some white shadow on the upper right corner when the screen is totally black? Its very apparent on camera mode, while the lens is covered to get a full black picture. Anyone pls. I want to get convinced that this is not really an issue but maybe due to its high density resolution.

Posted by iantaylor27
Hi
Yes i have it on mine and have asked O2 for a replacement even though its not a issue, just gets to me that its there.

Posted by maherladsak
Please update us if same thing exists on your new unit. I hope they will replace mine if necessary after a week or two.

one more thing. The left side of the sliding screen unit seems too SHARP. the plastic below the metallic cover is deep resulting to an exposed metallic edges. The otherside seems so perfect. I have the silver one. I left already the place where i purchase it and i might be back there after a week or two.

I got my fourth Xperia last Wed. It's better than previous three, but some problems still exists, I have to accept...

Posted by maherladsak
problems like?

Posted by Jabe
this is my first slide phone so i don't know what is still OK and what not. When i press a key (specially keys on bottom left - panel key for example) it fells like the top part of the slider gives in a bit. there's a bit of travelling space between the keyboard half and the screen half. Is this normal and I am just complicating things or this shouldn't be happening? It's not as obvious if I hold the phone without the other hand positioned at the crack between the halves.

I hope I explained this well enough to be understandable and you know what I mean.
EDIT: after a long search on google I think the correct term for that is wobbly. So do you find your Xperia slider wobbly?

The same is happening to me, I hope this normal.

Mine is black and I noticed some paint scratches on the back cover, especially to the sides. I think it was scratched by my fingernails. I'm afraid that it will become larger every time I open the back cover. Just as my c902 did. Does the silver one has this scratching problem too?

Mine has that same edge...will take the fight to the provider...really shoddy build quality

Posted by Redbeard01
well... sadly.. had my new vodafone X1 for just about 3 hours.. the on/off switch is broken.. stuck in . no more movement .. talk about endurability

Posted by SloopJohnB
I´ve been told the metal back piece (houses the battery) comes off easily, is it true?

Posted by WhyBe
I returned my Silver X1 due to a faulty FM radio and got a Black X1 in exchange (I like the Black better now that I've had both in-person). The build quality seems more robust in the Black X1. I don't know if it's because it's newer or if the black ones are built better? Also, the battery cover on the black seems thicker, heavier and snaps in "cleaner" than on my Silver X1.

Posted by ricster2000
My first X1 (silver) had a VERY loose back cover, so I got o2 to do a door step exchange. My new one is definitely more robust and I can't see the battery cover coming off any time soon, I actually had trouble trying to pry it off myself!
