US Election Day Obama v McCain (take 2)

Ok so it's a massive day happening right now so we have to have a thread. Hopefully this wont get locked out this time.

Go Obama!

I saw one of the 1st results this morning - West Hampshire I think?. Obama won that one.

Posted by gforce23
It's New Hampshire.

The first results, eh? Umm.. the earliest voting polls close at 6PM ET.

Posted by princesst28
go obama!!

Posted by admad
Go McCain, phew he will win anyway That's for sure.

Posted by Daedalus85
Apart from the racist southerners, I can't think why any of them would vote for McCain.

If he gets into office, we won't see Christmas this year, we'll all be blown to smitherines by the nukes he's going to send off round the world.

Posted by admad
Well why would he send nuclear bombs all around the world? What kind of weird thinking is it?

I wouldn't vote for Obama, because everyone says to vote for him, all the press, celebrietes. Same was here in Poland, it was like "oh vote for Tusk, he's awesome" There was like million of cool photos of him, his family, i mean wtf was that. And now we have a clown for the Prime Minister...

So when i see today a million of cool photos of Obama, his childhood, when he cries, etc. It's making me sick...

Posted by arien617
But, think of it this way...
(and I'm about to shamelessly quote Mock the Week)

Why the hell would you vote for a man that came 2nd to George W. Bush 8 years ago, and is likely to die from a mild winter?

Posted by admad
Well either way, McCain is going to win, i just know it

Yes and being behind in the polls this whole time is the best way to do it. wink wink lol

Posted by bavlondon2
Obama leads McCain in 5 of the 8 crucial states.

Posted by Daedalus85
The reason behind what I said is, is simply he's very trigger happy. He comes from a war background, he's got a grudge against alot of countries for what happened to him during the way he was in, and most likely any war the US have ever been in, and he's very high on defence, the army and the military in general.

Besides, I hardly think YOU'RE bringing anything better to this conversation, who the hell says "I don't want to vote for someone because theres been too much advertising on them in the press"? The reason you gave for prefering McCain to win is childish at best.

Posted by bavlondon2
Obama just oozes of confidence. I havent seen that in a US President since Bill Clinton. Obama will win.

Posted by tranced
Chill ppl chil

Posted by Daedalus85
It's politics, we can't chill! lol

Posted by Nanu
radio 2 had a little phone in today for an hour and a half and Obama won 80% to 20%

Posted by bavlondon2
Obama will win by a landslide. He has been ahead in the polls since day 1. The only way McCain will win is if they cheat like they did in 2004 with the voting machines not working in some states. But anyway I doubt that will happen again there are too many people on the side of Obama this time.

Posted by Miss UK
Obama has certainley got more votes than McCain (chips),

Obama is younger and can lead America well,
McCain looks like a toss-pot like Bush.

Shame we cannot vote, afterall it may affect us all looking
back over the years

Role on UK elections Labour bloomin well need packing out!

Posted by Bonovox
I really could not care less about the US elections.

Posted by mcrosser
so how many hours till we know the results? how long does it usually take ?

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Apparently it isn't official, but Obama has won...

Posted by yea g
Now offical - obama won! (heard it on da radio 2 minutes ago)

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Haha yeah just heard it too. And I heard McCain's public address where he was saying he congratulated Obama over the phone while the crowd of McCain-lovers booed.

Posted by yea g
you did aswell? Are you, by any chance, listening to the edge?

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Perhaps, perhaps...

Posted by admad
Well, that sucks. Let's see how things will turn out now, Obama won't retreat military from Iraq, Afghanistan etc. , that's for sure.

Told ya 338 - votes - 115. That's a landslide just like I told ya.

Not only did he win the election but also they have the majority in the sentate now AND they will have gained up to 30 - 39 extra seats in the house of representatives. Perhaps now he can really change things and make America loved like it once.

Posted by admad
Well i really doubt it, but we will see, i hope

338 to 160 electoral seats and 56 to 40 in the senate.

I dont get a vote as i live in UK but wanted obama to win. Couldnt believe my eas when it was anounced on kiss DAB digital radio. So i quickly grabbed my phone and went onto the google newr rss feed and found out. Told my mum she turned on radio stoke dab and confirmed

Posted by carrier1
What exactly will obama change? And how?
And the 'first black president' hooray... Is there a bit of (reverse) racism at play? Maggie Thatcher was the first woman PM in Britain. And wow...how life got better for british women and the 'disenfranchised' in general under that one!
Everyone pretends to 'understand' that Bush II was just a puppet - then, who's pulling his strings? And won't the same strings fit a charismatic black man?
Also: Obama was so vehement about the fact that he WOULD HAVE VOTED AGAINST THE IRAQ INVASION (mind you, he didn't and couldn't so 'wouldn't have' doesn't count ) - very dramatic in various documentaries against the war. But he's been all pro the illegal attacks on Pakistan and he's pro 'dealing with Iran'!!!
I see Obama and I think, 'Darn, Tony Blair won Pimp My Body'!

Not just free coffee and donuts, but free tacos, chicken, cheesecakes, ice cream, MP3 music, clothes and (ahem!) sex toys too, according to this link.

The one thing that people should be aware of is that in a place like America bad things happen to Presidents. The sad reality is that with him being Americas first black leader someone is going to try to kill him. Its horrible saying that but its true but maybe no more than people wanted Bush dead. God Bush was awful.

There will always be people who dont agree with the policy but it's up to the secret service to protect him. I'm sure he will be fine. And remember more WHITE people voted for Obama than those who voted for both Kerry and Gore in previous years so it just goes to show how far he has managed to reach.

Am I off-topic when I ask: how probable is a black/muslim PM for Britain or Ireland or Germany or France? Just a thought...

Posted by Nanu
Or a mixed-raced PM, like Obama?

Those are two entirely different questions. Muslims can be white, latino or Asian. I know Blacks (or African-Americans) who are orthodox Christians, Buddhists or even agnostic.

France has a lot of immigrants from northern Africa, so I'd say that would be the country most likely to have either (or both) demographic as president. I may be completely wrong though.

Posted by Vlammetje
For UK, Germany, NL, France I'd have to say VERY unlikely.
And I would've thought the same about the USA until recently. So this vote speaks volumes about the want for change by the larger part of the American public. I am awed by all this

The thing that always confuses me when Democrats and Republicans in the US switch places, is the act of undoing policies and such. So much change (some for good, some for bad) and so little security that it will last any longer than 8 yrs..... it must be unsettling to be a US citizen at times!

Right now I have only a few great hopes:
-that he will make it through his 4 year term
-that he will bring about the 'change' that so many expect from him
-that he can unite all americans for him

Posted by bavlondon2
It will be a long process given they are in a recession. It took 8 years to get America in the mess they are in so it wont be quick to start fixing things.

Posted by Dups!
@Vlammetjie

Hmmmmmm! Let's see.....

For Germany- HELL NO, make that triple HELL NO!
For UK- very slim chances but.... Probably another 20 years.
France- more like the UK

Posted by bavlondon2
There is too much of a stigma attached with muslims in UK and the rest of Europe. And with fears of Sharia law being introduced here the general population feel that there are plans to ultimatley turn Britain into an Islamic state. I wouldnt't expect to see a Muslim PM for at least 30 - 50 years.

Posted by Bonovox
America(obviously)has bigger population than UK and bigger black population. So does France and Germany. France has 6 million muslims but i still dont see a black or muslim leader in any of these countries happening. Not in my lifetime anyway. But another thing that gets me the world over and especially in UK US FRANCE and so on. Every leader says CHANGE WILL HAPPEN and the people get excited. But in reality it never happens. Obama has alot of work to do from the damage caused by bloody Bush. But i dont see it happening im afraid. Unless Obama being the type of guy he is can establish good relations with the middle east.

You cant compare Muslims to Black people in terms of getting elected. There is an ongoing war in Iraq and Afghanistan and whilst we will eventually pull out of Iraq I wouldn't expect us to pull troops out of Afghanistan for at least 10 years at the earliest. Obama has even said he will send more troops into Afghanistan.

Then there is the problem of religion and how big a part that plays in the beliefs of some of these nations. It's just too messy to see anything like the Obama situation arising.

It's nice to see so many people celebrating in the streets (white and black). I dont think America has this since John Kennedy. I cant wait to see his inaugeration. lol Should be quite different to Bush's last inaugeration in which he had to sit in his limo as it was pelted with eggs haha

Posted by aatuif
congratulations to barak hossein obama on the massive victory...

that is one of michael moore's inventions! He fiddled the footage!!! Watch 'manufacturing dissent'!!!
As to 'you can't compare muslim amd black'... So it's vacant?! No real progress, right?!

Posted by bavlondon2
Nah I cant see any with Afghanistan and Iraq goign on. Not to mention Israel/Palestine and Iran.

Posted by Vlammetje
that's foreign policy though. There's internal US policy that he can hope to make a difference. if he does, he'll extend his mandate for another 4 years. In 8 yrs, who knows where the world will be? Things were slightly different 8 years ago........

Posted by bavlondon2
I think the fact that we have seen such a dominant show from the Democrats (Presidential/Senate & Congress) then we could be witnessing a very strong coalistion that could well take the next 2 or 3 terms with ease. But there is lots of work to do.

Posted by brownie1989
Nbama isnt the first black presedant because his mother is white. Also i think mcain is the winner today as obama is going to have 4 years of hell. Hes got to withdraw from iraq but not to soon. He has got to go through the financial crisis and stop wwiii

That would worry me immensely. I'm old enough to remember France's state sponsored bombing of a Greenpeace protest boat in Auckland Harbour in 1985.

Expert opinion (not mine ) says that while Obama may pull out of Iraq, he can't pull out of Afghanistan, in fact more work (troops) is needed there.

And the real financial crisis is just beginning. According to Fortune magazine the first American baby boomer to apply for retirement earlier this year will be followed closely behind by another 78 million others over the next 17 yrs. Major problems lie ahead for the US economy and they are in the worst possible shape to start from.

Also the smart money says to watch the Iranian elections next year as president Ahmadinejad will be under pressure as the falling price of oil leaves his financial mismanagement exposed. This could cause instability in the region and more political/financial problems for Obama and the US.
