Hi,

I am about to finally settle with w950. So i was eager to know which format for music would you suggest to me -> which file format and bitrate respectively offers the optimal combination of low disk space usage and sound quality.

Thank you in advance!

With the size of memory cards increasing, I would say get a large enough card, and set them to around 192kbps, which is around the same as a CD.

w950 has not got a slot, i have not seen it yet but as far as the reviews go ... so 4 GB that is all.

4Gb will be enough. So 192kbps, will get you alot of music on.

I tend to have a mix of songs at 192kbps and 320kbps, primarily because I generally dump whatever song I download straight on to my phone and iPod.

The average length of a song is 3 minutes and 17 seconds = 197 seconds = 4.61MB = 827 odd songs on your 4 gig drive.

However, if you're into trance and house music, the average length tends to hover closer to 5.5 minutes, i.e., 490 songs @ 192kbps which is still a pretty decent number.

I'm sure the battery will be dead before you have listened to them all.

128 kbs is fine - I play mp3s from my P1i over a 16 channel sound desk at my Church - it sounds brilliant

So it's not the encoding that's the problem...

And I thought my hearing was bad! If you have HQ headphones you should really hear the difference between 320 an 192 kbps. Much more clarity and less distortion by compression. Yeah, and get your sound drivers modded. Could be worth it. (My first phone with a mediaplayer was a K700i, great phone but only about 35 Mb available memory and standard headset. But it had FM-radio too so I didn't bother much degrading mp3's. Just a couple of favourites).

I am no audio professional but I use EVERY music on my phone as AAC+ 64kbps (MP4/M4A). Long time ago I tested and saw no difference between AAC+ and MP3. For me it sounds the same. The plus is that you get each file at about 1.75MB. Some even say 48kbps is good too but never tried.

LOL - perhaps you're right, I don't have HQ earphones - just some SE walkman ones - and I don't play my music very loud either. I usually listen to music on headphones just as background and that does me fine... - or through a casette linkage into my car audio system - or through Pro-quality sound system at church...

Any tips on good (cheap ) headphones?

Well, I got myself a Sennheiser HD 215, it's huge, but sound quality is great. (Nice ear-warmers too.) Had to modify it a bit to make it connect directly to my HPM-82 jack. These big headsets have much better dynamics than standard SE in-ear headphones. I got it for about 50 euro's from a webstore, a very good price, but some stores ask double.
