I have a major gripe with Nokia. This is something that is just plain wrong and seriously puts me off buying Nokia handsets.
Nokia batteries seem to run out of juice if not charged regularly. For example I just pulled my 5310 out to listen to some music and the battery is bone dry. It was fully charged only a couple of weeks ago and the phone has been turned off the whole time. By rights, a lithium battery should retain atleast 50% of it's charge over 2-3 years on the shelf.
At first it was just my N70, and I thought well maybe it's just a bad battery, but now the 5310 is doing the same thing.
Is this normal for Nokia batteries? Or am I just unlucky?
If this is normal, wtf stupid idea is it to design a phone that can't be left in a draw ready to be pulled out and used when you want it without having to charge it first??
Please someone tell me this is just a big mistake...

All I can say is that I have an old 8210 which I pull out from time to time and it always turns on and has a reasonable amount of charge left

I've never had a problem with the older phones. For example 3310, 8210, 6220. It's just the N70 and 5310 (the only modern Nokia's I own atm)

Well, speaking of Nokia batteries, I've got my own gripe with them. I've always found their battery indicator to be highly inaccurate, though the last Nokia I owned was the 3230, so I'm not sure if this is still the case. What I experienced was that the battery would take a long time to drop from full bar, however, once it did, it would deplete very quickly. The SE battery indicators are so much more reliable and you can even check the percentage of charge the battery has left.

It must be your battery. My N80 sat in the drawer for around month ,it had been fully charged and when i wanted to send something from it to my N81 i booted it up and it had only lost one bar and had no prob with it, but typical of the N80's batt around 4.5hours later of some internet use it then gave me the low batt warning, but otherwise no strange behaviour.

Yes, well NOKIA sort of dealt with that, on my N81 all the bars drop "correctly" up until the last bar which sometimes stays a few hours then the phone gives a low batt warning. What ive sometimes seen is my batt indicator is sometimes it may increase its bars by one or two depending a while after you've finished using it heavily, my K850 and other SEs also do this. With a 3rd party app called PhoNetInfo im able to see the percentage of batt left in my N81, its very accurate.

Well I have a new battery in my N70, and the 5310 is brand spanking new (only had it a month or so) and they both have the problem.
But it's good to hear you don't have prob with N80. Maybe I should try a new battery for the 5310? It's just frustrating because I bought the 5310 as a music player for occasional use (for everyday usage I use the W910), basically I bought it instead of a Sony Walkman 4GB player with bluetooth. When I looked at the specs of the Sony player, the 5310 had the same features PLUS internet connectivity (except the internal memory - but I had a free 8GB sdhc card), folr the same price. And smaller! And with memory expansion too.

Imo SE batteries are better than Nokia's, they don't drain as quickly and also the indicator is more accurate, still, what you're experiencing with yours, isn't normal.
There's a difference though, between being on the shelf or in a phone, but it can't be this much.
The N70 uses the BL-5C, which is a reliable battery, dunno what type of battery your other phone uses.
You say, the batteries are new, maybe they're too new ? How often did you charge them up until now ? It takes three of four charging-cycles for a new battery to be fully conditioned.
Where do you store your unused phones, is it in a hot place ?
Checked my N95 just now, it has been sitting in its box, switched off, for more then a month, but it's battery still is almost full.

no the batteries have been charged several times atleast, however lithium batteries don't need to be conditioned in this way. That advice only really applies to Nimh and nicad batteries.
They are original batteries. The N70 battery was sent to me by Nokia as part of the battery exchange program. The 5310 battery came in the OEM box with the phone itself.
Both phones, when I go to use them after a week or so (in the N70 it's dead after ony one day - and that's with the phone turned OFF), they are completely dead, so much so that when I charge them up and turn them on they both ask for the time to be set!
It's like they are drawing some serious current even when turned off.
On my SE phones even if the battery is allowed to go completely flat (ie the phone shuts itself off) they still don't need the time reset.

Well i think their batteries are pants. When i had one or two of their smartphones in the past they were dreadful. For ages the battery meter would say 4 bars even after fairly heavy use. Then if you switched the phone off then back on again it would show 1 bar. Quite strange and not accurate.

Thats realy strange Max. They shouldn't be discharging. About time and date im guessing s60v2 and s40 are just like that, with my s60v3 devices and A100/A200 SEs that doesnt happen.
Maybe its where you keep them that drains the batts so much.

Hi all,
Well all of my last Nokia's had a 1500aMh Li-Polymer battery and they were like the Duracell Bunny they just went on and on. I honestly can't remember the last time i ran out of battery on any of my devices but then i always charge my battery overnight.

Yep. Just discovered my N81 has a 1050mAh Li-Polymer. Its never died on me in all 10-11months ive had it, with average use it lasted 2.5days until i charged it, i think it could easily do a 3rd day though, this is with a few calls , some texts, 30mins of music and no web browsing.

When it would be just one phone, I'd say there' s something wrong with the phone, or the battery is completely gone, this can happen with new batteries also. But this is spooky !
There must be something they have in common, do you use the same charger for both phones ? Maybe it's faulty and doesn't fully charge them.

@dogmann, the batteries work fine if they are charged everynight, it's just that they lose charge if not used or charged over a few days or weeks. Whereas all my SE and other phones stay charged for months if not used (as all lithium batteries should.)
@gucci.011 I just store them in draws or even just on the desk. They are not in the sun, or in any extremes of temperature or humidity - no different to any of my other phones that all work fine.
@marly, I have two chargers, one old one new. I've tried both.

I've already had my N70 battery replaced under that program. It's a brand new batt from Nokia. The replacement program was to replace batteries that had a very small chance of blowing up. Those that didn't blow up continued to work normally. My old N70 battery still works but won't turn on if I leave it off for a day or two. The new battery (replacement) will turn on after a day or two, but if I leave it off for a week or more the battery is completely dead.
The 5310 doesn't have a battery replacement program since there were no problems with their batteries (at least none that Nokia own up to).
The 5310 I bought BRAND NEW from a store, in an unopened box, only two months ago.

Nokia batteries are more prone to leaks if they are not charged regularly, while you can charge SE batteries at any time and you don't have to charge them to 100%. My old W800i, when not used at all (except for 2-3 text messages a day), can last for a good 4-5 days.
