Sony has just announced the Exmor IMX060PQ CMOS sensor, which paired with its matching auto-focus lens module (IU060F), will turn some lucky handset into a 1/3.2, 12.25 megapixel shooter when it enters the race in March 2009.

Conflicting information in Sony's announcement. They announced two sensors. The 1/3.2" is an 8 MP while the 12 MP is 1/2.5" (thank goodness!).

The 8 MP may be the one used in the C905!

I thought the C905 used a Samsung-branded sensor?

Thats patheitcally old,counterfieted news!!

Posted by AbuBasim
^^^ AFAIK, the older prototypes used a Samsung sensor. SE replaced it with the EXMOR sensor later and at the same time simplified the camera UI.

Posted by se_dude
I dont think the sensor has to do anything with the UI, unless you count in the ISO.

Hasnt samsung announced a 12 mp camphone for 2009 too??

IIRC, Samsung's flagship has 10MP and 3x optical zoom.

That's what I was referring to. They dropped the manual ISO selection.
Without actually knowing why they did this, my own theory is that they needed to speed up the development (by simplifying the camera UI software) since they changed sensor type so late. (The more cynical would say that Sony's sensor was not capable of using the higher ISOs of the Samsung sensor so they simply removed the option...)

Posted by se_dude
Anyone wont be that cynical, seeing that even the K850/c902 had manual iso's.

Posted by AbuBasim
Does the C902 have manual ISO?

Posted by SE-Naz
C902 does not have manual ISO...

I have had the handset and never seen that option...

Cheers
ENJOY

sorry..get off topic...nowadays it seem only SE and Samsung on the megapixel war while Nokia and LG seem to be following or something hot are brewing in their design centre?

Motorola ...well don't know. Everyone is into 8 megapixel war...they only join the 5megapixel gang.

but I notice one thing....it seem like even Samsung don't really provide much phone with optical zoom. As if the optical zoom war is over or it never get started

NO it's not the same sensor
Because the two modules ( 8.11 Mp & 12.24 Mp ) claimed to be industry’s smallest and thinnest in their class

And we all know that does not apply on the c905

Thankfully it does not since the C905 has a better 1/2.8, whatever candybar they stick that new 8mp sensor in simply won't be as good in lowlight as the c905.

What is your source for this? Are you sure this is the sensor size and not the aperture?

Yes, I meant the aperture.

The camera module may not be the same but SE maybe used the same sensor inside a different, more bulkier camera module.

Anything new about Sony`s 12mp phone??

Posted by Raiderski
no and that's good

Posted by White Girl
In my opinion, having 12 mega pixels camera in the phone is pointless.

If you want to make a clear picture for a huge paper, would you even use the phone's camera?! Nah. You would want to use some professional camera.. This is just a mega pixels competition in the market now.

Posted by NightBlade
The more megapixels, the clearer the pcture in smaller resolutions.
It's never about the full-size photos.

I hope they've improved the optics. Either way, we have a real race on our hands.

1.4µm pixel size, no thanks

@Raiderski

Be more specific please?

Posted by mario2004
YES - SE just announce it ! And is running the s60 OS ! For a chage I love SE Lets hope,Nokia won't suck then dry with patent infringements. While Symbian is open source by now, the S60 touch is a bit of a problem. Yes one can use the os (more or less at will) but to get there the hardware must be designed in a 'certain way' and this is where Nokia smiles all the way to the bank. Huh, and all of a sudden I don't like Nokia anymore - if they play dirty It reminds me of the South African goverment: Under public pressure, they gave a certain amount of watter free for all BUT one must pay a fee to get access to the tab

Is the KoKura supposed to be the Idou?

Is this a conversation/Thread about the Idou or seperate device?

IF chooses to implement the "USB Type A (host)" - this will change the game. No other smartphone has implemented this feature since the good old PDA days of Casio's last PocketPC device almost 6yrs ago.

Posted by norbi_nw
Change topic name to "IDOU" since we will start the opinion war
Now finally SE made a phone that is PRETTY, SMART (symbian 9.3 or ++), and with a good camera (well better than my G900) and TOUCHscreen... Well made SE ) i hope it will be smart, fast, good, and released soon so excited about it now...

Not only for K850... The Idou looks like as a replacement for any previous phone... Even the smartphone owners can upgrade to this jewel without worries... Hope this model won't be buggy and will proove it's specs and itself worth buying.

Frankly I'm quite surprised SE finally gave it to demands from fans Old & New: Bring us Cybershot and Walkman features without cramping either's style or limiting us in quality.

delivered finally on BOTH the W995a & Idou.

However, I don't know if Idou will be in my pocket as its using the SE proprietary headset/USB connection and no specific photo showing use of 3.5mm headset jack. Odd as the SE W995a has BOTH!

I'm sold! SE, you had me at 'touchscreen camera'. I'm glad you beautiful people provided us with this freak of nature. Wow, I haven't sounded like this in ages! Now...back to being a fanboy again...

Posted by mario2004
Wow - After I 'broke' the news in this tread (a few hours ago),it caught 'fire'. The nice thing about this cell is its OS. It will use the mighty s60,which I know inside out and 'pushed' since my 7650 Is not only a 'cybershot' and 'walkman' and what have you, but its also a SMARTPHONE ! Let's hope Nokia won't be to strict with their patents, in which case, SE should have it bug free just in time for christmas
