am wondering if any phone geeks can help me out here Smile
do any phones come with built in 'walkie talkie' functions?
basically me and a mate will be doing a motorcyle tour and want the ability to talk to each other (1-4km range would be ideal) and in wanting to minimize our gear we are wondering if this function is possible to get in a mobile phone.

it would be a HUGE bonus if the mobile also came with...

digicam
video recording
GPS
mp3 player

i know its a lot to ask but tech seems to be getting sooo good these days!

thanks in advance! and if you have used a hand set like this before, even better! please tell us your impressions.

Hiya, welcome to the forums

Unforuntately, no, it's not possible.

However, your best bet is get a phone with all those features, and get a plan that gives you unlimited calls to that same network (just make sure they're both on the same network) and call each other, or even make a single call and leave it on all the time. Thats what I've done before when I need to have an open comms channel in the car.

what about an old nokia handset that had push to talk on it?
have they stopped making that?

Push to Talk isn't really 'walkie talkies' as such. It uses the network and costs about the same as a text message.

Plus, only one network in the UK ever supported it, Orange, and it was expensive and I think they've actually ditched it. You can't use it without the network, it's network dependant. Really, you're better off with traditional phone calls.

And it's not something that old Nokia's have, most modern phones have it, it's just much bigger in the USA than over here.

ok, thanks!
and thanks for the info.

basically i was hoping to have a com unit with which to talk to my friend while we ride motorbikes so using the mobile is not really super convienant.

a shame they don't have a com system similar to walkie talkie
