Hi folks!!

Which one is the better choice, in your opinion, and why!!!

Please don't write 'it's up to you!' I know it is!!

For example, the Sony comes with MP3 player and ear-phones. But I am not sure if the Tungsten does...........

Both good at sending and receiving e-mails? ?

ill go for the sony clie because of the built in camera, integrated keyboard, and mp3 capability

Posted by ofiaich
kolokoy Thanks!

I think the Tungsten can be used for mp3. I read a description of the Tungsten on http://www.expansys.com --->

Stereo Headphone Jack: Listen to MP3 tracks using headphones and add-on software, both sold separately

but I take the point about keyboard. The camera isn't so good though is it?

Clie has a larger screen, better CPU, and WiFi slot.

TT has that cool expanding thing, BT, and SD/MMC slot. Smaller screen.

I'd go for the Clie if I didn't need Bluetooth.

I'd go for the TT if I needed Bluetooth or wanted a device that looked really cool! (I love the expanding part!!!)

thanks jplacson

I only have one bluetooth device, my T68 with i software. I can get a Bluetooth memory stick by asking friends in Japan to price it there for me. Bound to be cheaper than in England.

I can still connect the Clie to the T68 with Infra-red, couldn't I?

I do like the Sony's bigger screen!

Actually, The CPU of the TT is much faster, it's 146 Mhz, and the Clie only has 66 Mhz..

Posted by ofiaich
I am not knowledgeable about CPU's on Palms but the http://www.expansys.com page for the Clie NX70v shows the cpu as an ARM-compliant 200 MHz CPU.

Expansys also has the Clie NR70v and says this has a Super VZ 66 MHz processor'

The Clie site - http://www.clieplaza.com/ says the cpu is an Intel® PXA250 200 MHz

I can see from the Palm site that the cpu is a Texas Instruments OMAP 1510 (ARM) processor but I have no idea how that relates to speed or power!

I am well and truly confused!

There's a difference between the Clie NX70 and the NR70. The NR70 is running with Palm OS 4.1 and therefor only requires a small CPU (the 66 Mhz CPU is VERY fast for a Palm OS 4 device).

The NX70 is running the new Palm OS 5, which requires more ressources, and therefor the NX70 has a faster CPU.

thanks Jensb

I know this. Some people recommend to wait for Palm OS6.0 because it will be a major overhaul of the Palm OS. OS 4.1 --> 5.0 seems to have small improvements but 5.0 --> 6.0 seems to be big but I have no idea when 6.0 is being released.

Also heard that the Sony NX70v will be flashable to OS 6.0

I have a Nx70V with the Blurtooth MS and the WiFi card and its great, I got it on the 24th Dec care of Sony Style direct sales. I know they are out of stock now for 2 to 3 weeks though.

I have the NR 70V as well ( I know I am am a tech tart!) but the processor is much faster and the OS 5.0 is very nice compared to the 4.1.

I use the WiFi all the time links right into my Wireless network at home and the new net browser is tops.

I looked at the Palm Tung T as well and its very nice but at the end of the day it don't say Sony on it right

Thanks Dave, your words are very helpful!

tomorrow, I will try to find one in the UK. I don't want to wait til Sony gets new stock.

Did you get the gunmetal grey one or the silver?

Ill go for this.

Posted by ofiaich

All OS 5 pda's are flashable to OS 6 later on until a new chip is developed

ofia. Correction, P800.

Posted by ofiaich
slip of the keyboard. P800 OK.

I don't make many voice calls so maybe Sony for me.

I am tapping this with Tungsten via BT with old T39. The colours are amazing and better than in Sony. WEB/WAP-browsers are excellent. The OMAP-processor is very fast. MP3 is coming in a week. Tungsten is the best buy.

Posted by ofiaich
Thanks Matteus!

My head is spinning at the moment. I have come down to Bluetooth versus camera as important in my decison making. I have no experience with bluetooth but guess it is easier to use the internet and e-mail via bluetooth as compared with an infra-red link.

To add a camera to the Tungsten is about £100 which brings it to the price of the NX70v, but then to add bluetooth to the NX70 v takes that on another £100!

I think the NX70v's camera can take still images as large as 640 by 480 and as small as 160 by 120 pixels. All videos are taken at 160 by 112 pixels and have audio.

I am not sure of the specifications of the add-on Palm camera. I saw it in a review somewhere.... but lost the link!! But I seem to recall 640 x 480! I am sure software will be available to make the add-on camera function as a video. I have seen such software for the lower spec. NR70v.

I am leaning towards the Tungsten!!

I do have a specialised interest, that is to add some form of Japanese support and to try to send and receive e-mails in Japanese. maybe that's a dream for now.

Thanks again,

Ofiaich

As of Friday 3rd January 2003, there hasn't been any news from Kinoma or Real about their MP3 software for the Palm Tungsten T (these 2 companies are supposed to supply MP3 player software, the Real software being the one that Palm will offer for free to Tungsten users).

You will have to wait a bit longer.

Posted by ofiaich
Cophia, thanks!

Not too much longer. There is a beta 6 available.

For the ultimate portability you cant go worng with the TT.
As you know Sony haves the best screen, fastest cpu, very good multimedia capabilities,a little bigger than most of the other PPC and Palm pda's,battery life is avarage,sw is very good(Bundled sw)First i have the NX but later i have to order the Tungsten for 2 reasons:
1-Built in BT
2-I need a specific sw+hw combo its called ATAP:(www.autotap.com) it only works on the Tungsten and few other older models of Palm.
You ll get better comminication capabilities with the Tungsten+ better support for all kind of problems. If i have to buy only one pda i ll go with the NX but if NX is not an option the Tunsten is the best(My opinion)i also tryed the LOOX and the İpaq 3970 but i dont like the PPC stuff(Good machines bad sw)
Also a new mp3 player is avaible for Tungsten later Palm will add a nice mp3 palyer 2(Very close future)if mp3 is important to you.

Matteus, can you post here, in a new thread or just email me step by step instructions 2 pair & setup wap and web browsers for Tungsten and T39m? Thanks. Prime@myrealbox.com

Posted by Matteus
BT+T39 is here:www.palm.com/europe/mobile/pairing.html and rest www.palm.com/be/ie/mobile/gprs.html !

Posted by JWBlue
i just wish packetvideo.com can make a version for the tungsten wherein you can watch streaming video with it... the P800 came with it and it is so cool, you can see live moving video of time square, london and paris opera...

Posted by heimi
@JWBlue

Are you using Esato from a WAP Connection with your Tungsten ?

Posted by ElGato
Why is it called Tungsten?
Does anyone know why..
It doesn't sound to positive in swedish anyway..

Posted by kapitan jackal
@elgato,

most probably because ot its color, and casing

i prefer a handheld with buit-in BT. my two cents

Posted by bonito99
@Elgato: what does "tungsten" mean in swedish? hmmm...

Posted by JWBlue
@heimi: yes... i use my tungsten to read and post here in esato when im mobile... wap over gprs here in the philippines on my provider is still free at the moment so i am taking advantage of it
@elgato: tungsten defined is "a heavy gray-white metallic element, the pure form is used mainly in electrical appciations i.e. the coil inside a light bulb that burns and produces light... i guess Palm wants us to "see the light" hehe... so what does it mean in swedish? hehe

Posted by Prom1
I think in swedish it means a heavy brick or something like that.

Thanks for the link Matteus, but was hoping to get the step by step info, your second link is very helpful though.

Veo PhotoTraveler SDIO Camera Card for PPC & Palm TT.

Kinoma do offer a video player for the Tungsten and you can try/buy the producer program which converts other formats for playback on the player.

Also, you know that the Compact Flash slot on the Sony NX is only good for a wireless LAN card and cannot be used for memory expansion.

Posted by ElGato
Ok.. thanks for the answers =)
Tungsten looks very much like tung sten (divided) in swedish which would mean heavy rock or heavy brick
Sounds nice =P hehe

Posted by Prom1
Any1 getting the Lan SD card from Expansys.com? If so test preview it!

Posted by jplacson
This is a bad joke, but if you get a Palm TT, you have to wait for Nokia's new 8910i!!! (So that both your devices are color, and pop-up! HAHAHAHA) On a serious note, a Palm TT and 8910i would actually look good together. That's purely for 'looks' though.

Both the TT and NX70 have their good and bad points, neither one is a 'bad buy'. If you'll be surfing using Bluetooth, get the TT, at least you'll still have a free slot of mem expansion.

I actually had the same dilemna you did...

I ended up with a P800 instead.

Posted by MnM
Do both these devices enable you to use WAP and the Internet coupled with the T68i ( I am so reluctant to give this up even for the TP800)?

Posted by Matteus
YES, tungsten has with good bowsers for WAP and WEP. I use it now for this answer. The WEB browser is very nice and economic, it do not spend much bites.

Posted by Prom1
12.1 inch PowerBook G4 with built in Bluetooth is more appealing with Palm TT.

Posted from a T39

Posted by Prom1
So Ofiaich, did you get a Tungsten yet?
