I think...

I've applied at almost every shop in my town and I hear nothing back at all, to name a few;

Currys
Comet
Pets at home
block buster
hughes electrical

Erm, about 3 times as much as that but i've fergotten.

Anyway I don't understand why they never get back to me, or when they do it's just a 2nd class letter in the post saying on yer bike.

The only interview I had was back In jan and that was for an ICT Technician at a private middle school, I was in the last 3 and they picked some woman (prrft )

Even the local spar and tesco turn me down, that's just insulting lol.

Now, at a local store called Godfreys they apparently had a sign up saying they're looking for people with excellent IT skills to come and work at their Online store.......Mum got me a form and I'll fill it it tonight and had it in at 11am tomorrow.
I got A's in IT in high school, done ICT for 3 years at sixth form and got the highest grades, then done another year of ICT at college and then I done 8 months of Cisco CCNA1...However I didn't like it and done 10 tests and not the last 1 so I didn't pass (although I have a letter saying I have passed so I may lie)...Don't know why, the college just sent me a congrats on passing letter lol.

Also run my own site and get paid to do side jobs such as installing people's home networks and building them computers.

So In theory I should be a good match for this job, but I bet they take 1 look at my math grade (F) grr...and also see that I have never worked before and will just go for someone who can *prove* their experience.

Do you think I should write a letter with the app form I have explaining my experience in full?

Want to get it across to them

I went through a period of bad luck with work years back. But yes do what you just said when applying for work do everything you possibly can to improve your chances. It sucks though i think when some employers dont even give you the chance of an interview. Good luck mate.

Posted by gregface
ring them up, if they say that you need to complete an application form, tell them you have done, more often than not they will invite you for an interview.

At the interview it helps if you have a general idea of what the interview might look like. just incase.

Cheers guys, will have to try my best, all that can be done really.

I have an appointment with a personal advisor or something tomorrow assigned to me by the job centre to help me out so will see what he comes up with, but I think they just want me to go on some course to learn a skill I have no interest in and get me any old job going.

I think sometimes in life you get to a point where you have to lie. So add some fake work experiences and get some references if you can. It helps a great deal.

A friend of mine applied for a job at PC world couple of years ago and I made up the reference for him and he got the job.. Experience is essential for every job you apply for these days and that really sucks

Do you work at the JobCentre by any chance PK? Clinical answer.

Offer yourself for unpaid work for a couple of weeks, they may take you on but if not; you have something on your CV.

I get interviews no probs for retail work,
however I have no Customer service experience and this is what retail employers seek within there employee's.

atm im working as a Volunteer for Save the Children this way im getting the experience for this role and I should be able to get a decent job soon

if you have no experience at all I suggest you volunteer also,
it's very rewarding give it ago

Yer I look on the site often, so many say "experience required" which is pretty unfair as you need to work to get the experience in the first place.

My mate had less qualifications then me and way way less IT knowledge, in fact I taught him most of what he knows and we both went for the same job, he got it and I didn't....he did however have about 6 jobs under his belt and I had none.

I'm looking at a form for an IT job now, but my mum just chucked it at me and said here this place is looking for people...but that doesn't help, for example it says position applying for:.........

Well I haven't got a sodding clue!

Then it says, why do you want this position and why would you be good at it..........I don't know as I don't know what the position is lol.

Is it online support

website maintenance etc, I don't know

The thing is as well, I feel I'd own an interview, I don't mind talking to new people and having conversations, I don't get nervous from it, however when I fill in app forms I over think them and end up getting into like a panic because I don't understand something fully and think sod it they shouldn't ask stupid questions, which I guess isn't the best way lol.

The job centre is a shamballs though and should be ashamed of themselves, it's like a rule that everyone who works there mustn't know how to use a computer, and they're only allowed to type 4 words a minute.

4 weeks ago when I went, she didn't even open my log book, she just said "Hi, has anything changed"
"Nope not yet"
"Ok then cya in 2 weeks"

I kid you not, that was that...well worth the 45min walk to town in the rain!

On Tues when I went again, he said, lets have a look if there's anything suited to you......Oh, wait, the computer has crashed, we'll just do it in 2 weeks time then.

Right, well done, thanks for the help!

And the thing is, I see the same people there every week, and I'll be harsh, they're not looking or even trying to get work, they're scum and dress like scum, they sit there, swear out loud, you get 16 year olds in there with babies etc and I think to myself I don't want to be associated with people like that.

And I think that's why the people there can't be bothered to help, because they see you've been coming for months and think that you probably can't be bothered, so why should they.

Don't worry too much.

The secret to success?

Find something you're really good at and then work damn hard at it.

Thats what someone told me anyway. Of course the hard part is finding out what you are good at, thats the challenge.

Always wanted to be a police officer, my uncle was one his whole life, around 32 years and had to retire due to cancer which he died of.

I'd love to do it and there's no reason why I couldn't, I was maybe a bit too unfit before but now I'm fine.
My local force were recruiting for 3 months, so I filled in the huge form, was around 10 pages long, got a letter back saying thanks we'll keep you updated, even if you don't get through to the next round.....So one way or another they are going to contact me, but they did say it will take months...and it has been around 2 months now

But I'd love to do it and I feel I'd be really good.

Watch just above every police show on TV there is, love it!

Even went to a career day with a small group from high school years back to show my interest.

But apart from that, I'm good with computers and that's about it tbh, I have no trade skills such as a bricky, welder, plumber, electrician etc.

I have a good job these days for past ten years. Anyway it gets me when employers say they want someone with experience. How is anyone these days supposed to gain experience if no one takes young inexperienced people on. Crazy. This might sound odd but i have noticed at interviews in the past that alot of employers seem to also be impressed if you find out and know a bit about the company your going for an interview with. I have always been asked in the past what do you know about the company question. Helps i think.

Posted by ÈL ® ö B ì Ñ
I agree mate, a few jobs i've seen which I thought I'd be good at and then read on and seen that crap sentance "experience required" or "experience not essential, but is preferred" which means anyone with minimal experience would more then likely get the job over me.

Grrrrr can you believe that AGAIN my alarm went of and in my sleep I turned it off and fell back asleep and woke up at 11.10....my meeting at the job center was 11.15, so phoned up and was completely honest and they said it's no problem and to come in next week.

I've done this a few times now, in my sleep, when the alarm goes of, I turn it off and hide the phone somewhere, this time is was under my pillow.
My sister said she heard the alarm go off and wondered why I didn't get up.

Odd eh.

Yer my mum keeps saying to put an advert in the newspaper and see where it goes, said to do free callout and no fee if I can't fix.
Also mention that I am happy to setup and install broadband and networks and anything really.

But there's always that thought at the back of your mind, what if you get called out and you have no idea how to resolve the problem lol.

Usually I do through experience, but your bound to get that odd job where you think, ummm.

Handed in 2 CV's to the computer shop down the road last year, bunch of idiots really, If I don't say so myself they would benefit from employing me.

Going to phone Godfreys now and see what they say about IT Jobs.

If you find it truly impossible to find yourself a job, look to your extended family. A lot of people I know (including myself) have got their jobs through uncles, cousins, family friends, etc. And usually these people are only too happy to help you out.

My uncle works fairly high up (2IC) for a video games arcade company and he got me a job in customer service at one of the stores, which I will keep until I am finished my study.

So yeah, ask around I'd say. You don't always have to get a job the accepted way!

Posted by ÈL ® ö B ì Ñ
I agree mate, but I don't have any family or friends I can use lol, got mum, sis and bro...that's it, bro is still in school, sister is at uni and works at pizza hut and mum is a youth worker....So no use to me really

Will keep looking on the job site and local paper (which comes in a few hours)

can i make a suggestion, what i did when i was having bad luck in findind a job is join a job agents. Ok they may only temp you out to places and you will hate the jobs, but while your trying to find a job your bringing in a bit of money plus your also gaining experience.

they got me a full time job, ok i dont enjoy what im doing at the moment but they are paying me well and it does the job (pardon the pun) untill i find something i actually want to do.

Tbh quite alot of the temp work was in warehoue's ect, but it brings money in and its pretty easy so worth it while your looking around!

Posted by ÈL ® ö B ì Ñ
I joined 2 agencies (3 inc job centre)

1 has never contacted me.

The other has contacted me a few times but nothing has come of their call, last time they called me was last week and I missed the call, so I phoned back and left a message and they never got back to me...Nice eh

YEh I know from experience Work is sure hard to find some times. You gona have to dig deep and really spend some good time filling in forms. Get some experince or make it up even exaggerat it. In the end thou its gona depend on you. All I can say is never ever give up or think about it.

normally it's quite easy to find a job, when applying for one this year I re-did my cv over 5 times, made myself suited to the employers. Just write what they want to see to get the interview then it should be downhill from there.

Posted by ÈL ® ö B ì Ñ
My mums friend told me to lie, told me to say that I worked for her for a year and put her down as a reference, and if they call her, she will confirm it all and praise me lol.

What do you guys think to that, it's 99.9% a lie, however she has paid me a few times to sort he laptops, broadband, desktops and network out.

Posted by pmerryman
If she has paid you a few times to do work for her, then your not liying are you.

I hope you have some luck soon.

There is a new branch of PC World opening close to me and and I went onto the website to apply. But didn't get passed the first bit, as you have to be really flexible, be able to work weekends and extra hours over Xmas etc. That's no good to me, I have 2 young kids and just want a part-time job that fits in with school hours.

Posted by ÈL ® ö B ì Ñ
Yer that must be even harder then me, I'm available to work any hours on any days, would even work christmas day too, wouldn't bother me lol.

Ugh just spend 2h at the job centre with this guy who was nice and talked me through some things.

But I *have* to join this course now which has 3 stages, so had a long chat and told him just to merge the 16 week course into 4 weeks, I told him I'm not putting off working, I do want to work and I am trying.

The crap side is he said I will be working for free, well, I get my £95 every 2 weeks, but apart from that when I'm doing this course I won't be getting paid for it.

As a incentive, I have some stickers/cards to give to employers, which means if they take me on for work, the employer will get paid £60 a week (a total of £2100), so they get paid to employ me and I think I work for free, it's just so I can put down some recent work experience which I said I'd be happy to do.

I'm not, who wants to work for free?

But I do want the experience and I might get a job at the end of it and I want to at least try.

I had to take, what I can only describe as a "stupid" test, it's a 2 page test where you read a job advert and then basically answer questions about that job, that was a good waste of 6 minutes.

It's a bit of a blow when they tell you maybe I shouldn't try so hard with IT because it's so hard in my area, because all my knowledge is in IT and all most of my qualifications are too, and for them to turn round and and basically just say, forget the years of hard work and qualifications, just do something else is a bit annoying.

I just had a phone interview with essex and suffolk water and the bloody phone, for no reason at all, died half way through, just restarted itself, battery is 60% so god knows what's up there.

Phoned back straight away and managed to get the same person which was a bit of luck.

A good trick they had is they explain a bit about the company to you, then say are you ok with that, I said yes, he goes "Ok, I'll be asking some questions on what I just told you in 5mins time"

I was like, ah bollocks I knew I should have listened rather then thinking blah blah blah lmao.

Got them all right though

Answered loads of questions, just waiting for a call back within the week now they said.

If you got a F in maths then go back and do it again at night school. I got a D in maths and took it again first chance i got in sixth form to get a C. I was told beforehand that i'd struggle if i didn't have a C in maths. Not saying that is why but repeating it now will not only show potential employees a willing to learn but it'll also help finding a job. Good luck i hope you find something soon.

Posted by ÈL ® ö B ì Ñ
No I agree mate and I went to take it this year and applied to late, so was supposed to go back down and apply again and I keep putting it off and again I think it's too late, might go down there on Tuesday and find out.

Been talking to my mum, might be looking at going to uni instead now, or changing my whole life completely.

Might find out the qualifications needed to be a vet or something, get them this year then go to uni next year, not sure yet.

Posted by haynesycop
A vet blimey you'll need a C at maths for that it's sh!t hard to get into, you have to know more than doctors to do that. Best of luck though with it all.

Posted by fatreg
You'll need more than a an C in maths to get to uni for veterinary....

Just a farfetched idea lol, but really tempted to redo english (I like it lol) and maths and get a B in english and C in maths, hmmm.
Then figure out what I want to do.

I want to be in the police force, but it's just not happening, so need to look at other things now.

Posted by badassmam
If you resit Maths and English, you cannot get more than a C as far as I know. Why not look into some courses i.e. do SageLine so that you could be a book keeper or accountant etc.

I am a scientist working at one of the top research institutes in the country while my friend dropped out of school, did a SageLine course and is earning a lot more than me.

University these days could get you nothing. It has taken me a year to find a really low temp job. Even though my contract will be extended and I will get better pay, I expected a lot more from a bloody hard Biochemistry degree. You would be studying for 3 years whereas you could be earning in that time.

Honestly, my uni research was excellent and I even had top Japanese scientists using my work yet my situation is still quite bleak. There are many courses so keep your options open.

Posted by ÈL ® ö B ì Ñ
Ah I already have to C's in English so that would be a waste of time then.

My problem is, I'm not sure what I want to do, which isn't a good thing when your 20.

I want to do something that counts, like the police, fire service etc, have even considered the army.

There's 1 place I worked at for 2 days and H.A.T.E.D it, they take people on every week in the newspaper, that's just how many people hate it.

The place is called IPSOS, and basically it's a call centre, you know them annoying phone calls you get asking you to do a survey...well it's that.
Last time I completed 2 days of training and passed the test, then didn't show up on my first day lol, think I was 17 at the time.

Anyway, after blowing the last on my money on someone's present, and I need around £1k for a holiday by November, I think I'm going to have to say f*ck it, go down and apply there again

Posted by thami
hey ÈL ® ö B ì Ñ Im looking for a callcentre job

Posted by ÈL ® ö B ì Ñ
I wonder if you have an Ipsos centre near you as they are ALWAYS recruiting, because so many people leave quickly.
