My upgrade is due in 4 weeks and as a very happy n95 user the natural progression is to the n96, However with the release of the 3g iphone i am now thinking of going for that instead, the only thing that concerns me is i use the camera on my n95 a lot for work and photographing and videoing my daughters am i going to be disappointed by the camera considering it`s only 2mp.
Does anybody have experience of using both phones(orignal iphone/n95)?

Well, if camera is a priority.. Maybe you should stick to the N96:-)... For the others, the iphone should do well.

The iPhone doesn't do video recording at all...another thing to think about.

Posted by nicv27
^ Not even the 3g version?

Posted by masseur
there are a couple of good free apps that do video recording quite well on the iphone, I use one call iphone video recorder and it takes the video first and then encodes to mp4 when the recording is finished

IMO the iPhone is a waste of time. Get the N96, it's camera will be way better, the N95 always wins group tests in regards to camera's. Plus if you REALLY want to you can watch telly on the N96.

But, at what resolution/fps? qvga at 15fps is acceptable.. Nothing below that.. Also, you may consider the iphone only if you are not much into symbian 3rd party apps. Although now there are a variety of iphone apps as well:)

N96 is certainly the better spec'd device, no question. I'm probably getting one which my son will probably inherit (as well as the 3g iphone!)

@apolloa, who is broadcasting on DVB-H in UK? I don't think anyone is yet

I really like symbian and i have added lots of applications to my n95 media safe python handy taskman etc.

thanks for the replies

masseur,

Does it not pick up the normal digital telly signal? If not then I did read something about it being launched on UK networks. Not sure which though.

EDIT:
I just googled it, I didn't know it was a special signal ooopps. All I can see though are trials in the UK??? Ranging in dates from 2005 to this year.

Between the two, I would definitely go for the 96.

However, I hope your upgrade will be free...from what I can tell, there is not a great difference between the n95 8gb and the n96. Not so much an upgrade as a tweaking imo.

The Virgin "Lobster" had mobile TV, Was this not using this signal? If not then it must have been using their mobile data service. BUGGER THAT! haha

Go for the iPhone 3G, you won't regret!

Easy to use (very user friendly), you can sync your data from your Pc or mac, battery life is awesome (Blockias can't say the same), and everything works out the box.

Too late.. the poster seems to have made a the decision already..

Posted by masseur
its not really too late as neither phone is actually available today, and infact their current choice won't be available for a few more weeks, so any input has the potential to be important to nicv27 and is perhaps something previously not considered, which may change his mind (though I doubt it!)

Posted by whizkidd
Yeah.. I was talking about the decision to get one of these devices.. just maybe if he decides to go in for the User Experience of the Iphone. Personally, I think he will not find much of a difference in the usability factor if he decides to go in for the N96.. .. almost the same as the N95.

The Iphone, though down on features should be a (welcome) change.. if he can live with it.

Once again thanks for all your replies, i have made a decision if it was purely on wow factor then the iphone would win, The major concern is that the iphone cant record video i know Masseur highlighted an application that can make this happen but in 2008 i think a top of the range phone should be able to do this out of the box.
I will be choosing the n96 i know it`s very similar to the n95 but i have been very happy with it and now i have an o2 data plan i can email my work pics/videos when i need to.
Although there is always the Xperia x1

This can be locked if no one else minds

Posted by scouser_75
Before it's locked, may I ask when the N96 will be released on the networks - especially T-Mobile?

Posted by nicv27
according to cpw it will be out oct but o2 said aug
So i am not sure

Posted by apolloa
Yeah, looking around the web you see varying timescales on it's launch. But I thought Nokia said towards the end of the year anyway? But I would imagine they want to take iPhone sales and the N96 will do it.
