Hey,
Just a quick question about what setting to have on my camera for the picture size, for the quality I am using Super Fine.
But for the size, Do I really need it set to L at 3264 x 2448?
The options I have are:
L - 3264 x 2448
M1 - 2592 x 1944
M2 - 2048 x 1536
M3 - 1600 x 1200
S - 640 x 480
Postcard - 1600 x 1200
Widescreen - 3264 x 1832
I currently have it set to M3.
I will mainly be looking at the pics on a computer screen, will also be printing some off and occasionally maybe looking at them on a 42" TV (probably only once when I get back from America).
Based on the above, what setting would you recommend?
It's a Canon Ixus 950 / Powershot SD850

I would put it on M2 (3.2Mpx) at the moment you have it on 2Mpx which is a little too low for my liking.
You will only need higher resolution than this if you wish to print in sizes that are A3 and above.

I can't see why any of you don't use the camera's full potential..?
I mean I can fit about 500 photos on a 2gb card with it set to fine @ 7.2mpx. You're never gonna take 1000+ photos unless you take a photo of every step you take.

I didn't think it made any difference in quality though?
Just that it makes the picture bigger so you can get posters done etc.
So if I have it set to L, the largest...the quality would be slightly better then having it on say M2?
Despite my not having a monitor that goes to the highest res anyway?

When I go to Florida I'll probably be taking over 1000 pictures, also the amount of space they will take up over say 5 years at a few MB each.

Bunged it on the Largest lol, Takes 570 pictures, so I'll just buy an 8GB card before I go, should take around 2000 Pictures at highest res, plus the 2GB card i'll have spare should I need it

The thing is that if you take a high res shot, then you can crop it without loosing too much quality, or re-size it, again keeping a nice crisped image than with a low res shot.

Yer and to be honest you can pickup an 8GB card for under £20 and will take around 2000 pictures, which really is enough.

I tend to generally use between 3-5mp to avoid filling my hard drive with huge picture files. Though of course if I'm taking pictures of things I want to keep, or special days out/occasions/holidays I'd use the maximum resolution.

Yer that's what I'm thinking, it's not every day you go on holiday so it's worth taking up more space for some better snaps.
Also, Once I hit a certain point I think I might just buy a 500GB external drive to keep all important images and documents on anyway so HDD space shouldn't be an issue.
Got about 1.5TB now but it's filled with downloads I cba to sort out lol...lazy

I've never ever taken my camera out of full res unless I want to use the extra optical zoom feature. Check that out, see if yours does it.
By using a smaller area of the image sensor, my camera boosts 10x to 15x with no loss of quality aside from the lower resolution.

Do you mean digital zoom?
I have 4x optical and 16x digital, but don't really plan to ever use digital, and if I did, 16 would be way more then I want to go in lol.
Would be interesting to try though, had a quick look but not sure where it would be.

It's not digital zoom, as arien says it uses the central part of the CCD when used in lower resolutions. For example, my Lumix TZ3 can get up to 12.6x optical zoom in 3mp mode, and 15x in 2mp mode.
Digital zoom just crops and enlarges the central part of the image, degrading the image. The extra optical zoom gives you a bit of extra zoom without degrading the image quality like digital zoom. imho digital zoom's completely useless, I always turn it off on a digital camera!

Just checked, it only seems to be 4x optical in all sizes.

Exactly what Sammy said, combine that with digi zoom and you can pull 60x if I'm not wrong. Don't have my camera at hand at the moment.
