Anyone good with cameras?

Hey,

Looking to replace my camera for when I go away, I've narrowed it down to these 3 I think:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/144619

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/143123

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/141069

Personally, I like the screen size of the 1st one, but the extra features of the 2nd olympus one there.

I've always been a big fan of the canon ixus and own an old one now, I was going to get it but then saw these olympus cameras for cheaper and seem to be better?

The 2nd olympus camera and ixus both have 8mp,

The ixus only has a 3x optical zoom where as the Olympus has a 5x optical zoom.

The 2nd olympus also has a slightly bigger screen.

Overall I prefer the look/screen of the 1st olympus @ £93

Then I prefer the 2nd olympus for it's spec @ £110

Then the Ixus is last for lower spec at £160

But I'm next to useless with camera's, if someone could take a look at them and tell me if they are any good, which one gives the best for the price, or recommend me a different model (no fat kodak ones, there they kinda bubble out on the right).

Thanks

EDIT:

A nice comparison here:

I'd say go for either that second Olympus, or pay the bit extra and get the Ixus. The Ixus has proper optical image stabilisation which you'll be glad of in low light situations where you either can't use the flash or it's effects would be useless. I think it has more manual control too, i.e. aperture priority, shutter priority etc. which means you can be more creative with your photos.

If you're not too bothered about image stabilisation or manual controls, and if price is a factor that second Olympus would be fine, think it's weatherproof too!

For me from camera experience i would go for Canon. Its obviously your personal choice. I have had 2 Olympus cameras in the past and dont like them Canon always better quality features and lenses and picture quality is far better. You also get proper quality glass lenses with Canon plus you got the option of view finder. Always handy.

Cheers guys,

I decided on the Olympus for specs/price, but after reading some reviews they all say the same, canon ixus is really good quality and to be honest I'd only get the olympus and wish I'd gone for an ixus.

So guess I'll keep looking around for an ixus then.

They have a great one half price at argos, from £300+ to £160 odd......out of stock everywhere though

is this in stock near any of you

Thank You for your help nice 1

Thank you fatreg appreciate it,

I don't think they'll have them in stock anywhere tbh, shame really.

Im out looking for a new camera and always find Jessops have great sales though Jacobs are expensive. Have a look there. A brand i avoid is Pentax oh dear have i had problems with past cameras of theirs. Never again. Avoid.

Yer when I was looking around the only makes I look for really are:

Canon
Casio
Olympus

One's i'm not to keen on usually because of their size/style:

Kodac
Samsung

Don't really touch other makes.

I'm asking on another forum, I'm currently torn between these 2 now:

That Olympus:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/143123/show_product_overview

And

A canon ixus 950:

http://www.canon.co.uk/for_ho[....]/Digital_IXUS_950_IS/index.asp

The ixus 950 is going to be around £50-60 more at around £160.......is it worth it?

People on another forum are saying to go for the Olympus, they say it has a better zoom and for the price the specs are good.
If you compare them....there's no reason to pay £50 more and go for the Ixus is there?

I will save up and pay more and go for the Ixus if someone can point out why it's a better camera then the Olympus.

What one would you guys go for out of the £160 Canon Ixus 950

Or the Olympus MJU 840.

Thanks

If I tell you this, what one do you now think is better value?

The olympus with a 2GB card = £121 del

The canon ixus 950 with a 4gb card = £150 del

You're both in, and out of luck with this:

The out of luck bit because even though Hoddesdon is a short while away, I have no idea of how to get to the Argos by train.

EDIT: I've reserved it anyway.

Thanks very much mate I really appreciate that, very kind of you.

Last night whilst I was looking at the camera, I found that one with a 4GB memory card included for £149.99, so £10 cheaper and a free memory card so don't think I'll be needing the argos one.
But thanks very much for reserving it

@ Voda, I only use the camera a few times a year mate, and I need a new one to take to florida with me, so need something that I can just slip in my pocket and carry around with me every day without it getting in the way.

Do you guys think it's worth paying the £150 for the ixus with 4GB memory or £121 for the olympus with 2GB memory?

Thanks

Was in Currys and comet today, didn't have of the models I want so I had a look at the one they recomended, which was actualy really nice and I thought, oh oh oh I want that.

It's the Sony T70

But then he showed me how to turn it on, by pushing the cover down, which in my opinion looks cheap and it sounds cheap when it snaps open (not like the sexy classy way the ixus opens up)

Also online, they say that the wide angle isn't that good, and quality of pictures in low light isn't that good.

So the only good thing really is the huge 3" touch screen on the back...apart from that it's awkward to hold and image quality isn't the best.

Here's a pic of it:

Think I have my heart set on the Canon Ixus 950 is now, hmm.

i think DonJuan could help you. i've seen so many good pics from him. i bet he knows a lot about this.

Might have to point him in the direction of this thread via Pm then

At the moment it's between these 3, in order of favourite a at the top:

In regard to the Sony, I can say that the touch screen is really a cool feature. I have a T2 which is a slightly lesser specced model with a slightly smaller screen. I find the image quality in all lighting conditions is fine, because I am never going to even pretend to be an expert. I just want a good looking, decent performing, fun to use (touchscreen) camera.

I don't know how the sliding open the cover thing on the model you looked at seems 'cheap', but the mechanism on mine seems very solid, and overall the camera feels very sturdy.

I'm not going to pretend I know a lot about cameras, but for a very casual photographer (and no offense if I'm wrong, but you seem fairly casual too), the Sony range suits me fine. In my opinion they look the part too.

The Canon has the better reviews and design (IMO)
Infact i'd nab it if it were a tad cheaper...

thanks tranced!

get the canon that you are talking about the ixus 950 i think, its named different here in the states.

I have taken all these pics with that camera and i love it.

you get the picture but that was the camera that got me into photography. Its real easy to use and i just upgraded to a rebel xsi, i keep the ixus for point and shoot and the new one for more serious pics

Wow great pics very high quality and pro. I love Sony cams but some have pointless gimicky features. Their lenses are great though and their processers. Argos are now having end of catalogue sale you can get great bargains now. I once bought online from them in sale a Panasonic DMCFX01 digital camera for £71.99. Its was over £250 when first came out. Great camera except problem with noise even in daylight.

Thanks alot for the replies guys, I am indded a camera Novice lol, I literally turn it on, point and shoot, only really use it a handful of times a year too.

@DonJuan

I'm impressed with those pictures mate they look really good, think I've setteled on the Ixus then, soon as as I get paid think I'll have to grab one

Thank You

Hey got the camera through today, first question is, what ISO setting should I use, normally I put it on Auto like a n00b and leave it there the rest of it's life.

The camera goes up to ISO 1600, but I remember reading last week that they recommend leaving it at ISO 800, any suggestions?

It has: ISO: Auto, Hi, 80, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600

Posted by number1
i recommend leavin it at iso 80, unless you have problems holding it still or need quick shutter speeds.

Posted by ÈL ® ö B ì Ñ
Ah righty, see I would have bunged it on 800 lmao, so you think having it at 80 with image stabilisation turned on is better then having it on Auto?

Posted by number1
iso is the amplication of light, the higher the iso the more the light is amplified so the more noise with lesser pic quality with the higher isos the cam can use quick shutter speeds so it will avoid motion blur etc, with the lower iso pictures will be of better quality but in low-light the cam will have to use longer shutter speeds to capture more light which means motion blur etc, iso 80 should be fine for all outdoor & possibly indoor pics but if you want to catch a raindrop or fast moving cars etc, turn up the iso slightly to get a quicker shutter speed.

Ah I get ya, thanks alot mate makes more sense now, I know next to nothing about cameras and seeing as it's sunny out and I've got sod all to do I might take the dog out and have a play hehe.

Posted by number1
this should example the shows the iso pic quality well

(ISO 80, ISO 100, ISO 200, ISO 400, ISO 800 ... , ISO 1600)

thats from a phone camera, the digicam will be miles better but you get the idea.

Ahh nice mate thanks for that, there is quite a big difference, I was taking pics earlier on different settings to see what they would look like.

One thing I did do was put the quality to Super fine, but I then made the images smaller, they were set to: L = 3264x2448 - takes 549 pics

But I change it to: M3 = 1600x1200 - takes 1816 pics

(2gb card)

Is that an allright size to use if I'm only going to be looking at them on a computer screen and having the odd 1 or 2 printed off, or would you recommend me leaving it on the largest picture size.

Thanks mate.

digi cams resize there photos using there buit-in software, so if you set a 8mp cam to 5mp, the photo is taken in the 8mp resolution but then resized buy the cams software, it's better to use the maxium resolution then resize them yourself using photoshop or something as the built-in resizing software of digicams tends not to be very good.

Posted by arien617
^^ It must vary then from what you're saying, my TZ3 uses a smaller area of the sensor for lower resolution frames, so they are proper 5mp or 3mp instead of the full 7.2.

Posted by number1
most of them just resize the pic with there firmware, but if it does use less space of the sensor rather than resizing then it's fine to use the lower resoloutions.
