LOL! Exactly my thoughts. When I saw the P5 my heart sank when it looked like one more phone with that odd QW-ER-TY keyboard. I hope they came to their senses and focus on a proper follow-up on the P9xx series! But I admit that the P5 looks really good -- until you slide out that horrid keyboard.

At the moment it looks like Nokia's E71 may be my P990i replacement unless SE pulls their thumbs out of each other's backsides!

Sad news? You actually mean let's rejoice right? P5 is such a disappointment, it could've sealed SE's sink into the abyss for good. I wonder which idiot in SE wasted all their resources developing those crappy prototypes.

Precisely!

That does it... Letting the G900 be the best smartphone and the C950 best regular phone...

I can't get it, what are their plans now??? :S

That's the problem. They didn't even bother to use any resources, all devices manufactured for the past 2+ years have just been the same thing with different makeup and inferior specs if anything.
It looks like SE has finally realized that they actually need to make an effort to come up with a decent device.
At this point I wouldn't think twice if they offered a P990 with 128 MB memory, I could happily live with it for another year. After all the P990 still has the biggest screen, lens cover and proper qwerty keyboard.

I think at the moment SonyEricsson's team seem to be struggling someone needs sacking. I love SonyEricsson but the past year or so has been a big let down.

Man this is shocking!

Imagine the amount of money they wouldve spent developing the p5i. Not good market news

And theyre also phasing out p1i in sep 2008?

So whats going to fill up the gap?

my best bet is the newest phone will be a really revved up, huge touchscreen interface.

Posted by Bonovox
Why are SE so slow at bringing out phones. Also i dont really see that many smartphones from them other companies throw them out so fast ya cant keep up whereas SE take a year just to announce something.

They probably calculated the loss to be a lot more if they released the p5 and beibei, 'cos not a whole lot of people will be too happy about buying 'rehashed' phones.

I think their top stuff is going to be in the Xperia line now. X1 being top dog at the moment. Perhaps SE is working on a UIQ-Xperia device to be released sometime after the X1.

Yeah, that keeps the point alive... It would be nice to have xperia-like phone with 5mp camera (or better) running windows mobile...

Simply put, if SE's flag ship is to be a WM, than it would be goodbye SE for me. There's plenty of WM devices to choose from without having to deal with SE's learning curve for a new OS.
SE's strong point is Symbian+touch screen combination, anything else will make them just another vendor.

Problem was not the keyboard, which is AWESOME, its only odd if dont try it, and i hope they do use it, problem was its old processor

A shame. It's for the best obviously, the P5 as it stood was woefully under-specified, and this whole episode just goes to show how lost SE are at the moment.

It's slightly mystifying to me how we went from the supposedly amazing prototypes that certain posters here were talking about back before Christmas, that seemed to mark a step change in UIQ development, to the completely uninspired "P1 Slider" of the P5 we've come to know about now. Even more odd when that whole process has now proven to be pointless, since even SE have realised that another rehash of the P990's platform is untenable.

I'd love to believe the P5 has been pulled in favour of some more ambitious re-working, but I suspect they've just given up on UIQ as anything more than a feature-phone platform, a la the G series. Anything more than that = Xperia = Windows Mobile, or some other serious OS from outside SE.

Makbil, I couldn't agree more, if the only high end smartphone on offer from SE when I renew in a few months is the WM based X1 I'll probably just get the HTC Touch Pro instead. Been using SE for years but probably not for many more.

UIQ is the problem here, the ideas are there but implementation is not possible is the framework is weak.

Forget about a new smartphone from SE for at least 2 years.

Poor can't catch themselves up to now P990i has been an omen for them. I keep coming back all the time looking for some great announcement but alas Nokia is jabbing a once promising brand and the iPhone got them seeing stars.

afaik, the g900 is a symbian smartphone.
the x1 is a windows mobile smartphone...

I was talking about Symbian smartphones, there are just too many better WM devices to take SE into consideration.
As far as the G900 goes, it is a major downgrade from the P990, except for the memory - a trend which unfortunately shows where SE is going.

Like many of you, I was waiting for the next big p-series device, but, was let down by the initial p5i specs and design (after keeping my p910 and skipping the p990 and p1i). I gave the Xperia X1 a good look and soon realized this is where all that p-series magic went. If you're willing to pay the supposed premium price and give up on UIQ, then the X1 should be given a long hard look. I was, at first, turned off by the Windows Mobile OS in the X1, but, seems to be taking that into consideration while developing the X1 software. Also, you have to consider that WM7 will hit the market sometime early next year and it looks to be really evolved from the old WM interface. I don't think UIQ would be able to compete (not that it does now ). UIQ will probably be relegated to a mid to low-end smartphone OS.
But if your waiting for "killer-smartphone", then Xperia X1 is where it's at. Removed HTC comment to stay on subject.

"HTC rumours"? SE's influence notwithstanding, the phone is built by HTC, that's a simple fact. It's also treading very closely to the template already established by HTC for a good WM smartphone, right down to the form factor and internal design. The X1 is nice I'm sure, but it's no revolution, and it's not all that far removed from the likes of the Tytn II I already have in my pocket.

I think that the G900 is not downgrade from the P990... In my opinion, with the G900 are trying to bring the UIQ Smartphone to the users of phones with classic design. This phone is meant to let the non-smartphones users feel the features of UIQ smartphones while having the same old design of the phone. That's my opiniont though
