A Sony Ericsson service consultant, whom had came out and started his own business which include Nokias had told me that Nokia phones "generally" generates too much heat especially when talking too long. Similarly the SE W880i because its slim and due to the casing material.
Anyone has similar experience with both Nokias and SE???
Would the heat be bad for health???
I remember earlier days where (at least) I do look out for the SAR value of each new handphone but that seems being overlooked nowadays.
I have just bought a Nokia 6500 slider, love it and so does my girl but she complained handset hot after long conversation and her ear is painful. Immediately I have put it back to the shop for resale...

Anyone with similar experience??

Well, a nominal amount of heat generating when you're talking for too long is considered normal if i'm not mistaken. Although you should be concerned if it does get extremely hot. It should be fairly easy to tell when the heat is too much. Also, the use extensive use of handsfree and headsets has made people overlook this issue.

My N81 never heats up during long conversations,it just gets a bit warm, only time it heats up is when theres a weak 3G signal and im on the net.

Same is the case with my N73. It does heat up with continuous data usage. Especially when I use the phone as modem. That I guess is considered okay.

my old htc tytn heats up really good when i use wifi lol

when using wifi on phone or use as modem heat is normal esp where signal is low. the concern here is more on heat when using for conversation over normal telephony where one would put near ear. my w960 does not feel that hot after long conversation only some heat

Give the guy a banana.... All phones heat up during conversation, some granted heat up more than others, but heat can't disperse that easily when it's A) being held in a hand and B) being pressed against an ear all while actually being in use and draining battery power.... having never looking into it really, I can only assume it's generally caused by friction, speaker vibrating away while your speaking and listening, speaker pushes air out and sound waves out, sound waves go into your ear canal and get deciphered by the greatest instrument you'll ever own into a format you can understand.. but where does the air go? oooh... there's nowhere for it to go.... so as time passes more and more air is being put in betweeen your ear and the speaker, and we all know what happens when molecules move about and your introduce more molecules into it, they bang together creating heat.......

TA DA!

heat is made.... wooooooo

Also batteries.. they don't discharge cleanly, when under heavy use they have to work and a by product of that is waste heat and that has to escape somewhere...........

WAHEY! 2 lots of heat.....

Now, where's my banana?

All phones heat up when pressed against your ear after long periods. Also though i find 3G and thin phones heat up more and mostly during internet. But most of it can be put down to body heat. My old Nokia 6300 did get hotter than normal though.

All phones get hot during prolonged use but thinner phones especially with metal casings seem to exacerbate the situation.

It is very normal for a phone to heat up when being used. However the levels of heat differ according to the type of service that is being used at that particular moment. Take for instance If I have my v360 motorola connected to a pc as a mordem it heats up more than when Iam on long calls and extended usage of gprs in the phone. Using it for extended calls will generate extra heat but that ought to be normal as well. Imagine that body temperature is 37 degrees celcius for a normal and healthy human. Unless the phone has a factory fault of which it rarely heppans.

Given some heat will be generate and some phones generate less than others. Anyone tried the Nokia 6500 slider, its above normal range of heat! much much more than the old banana nokia phone in its earlier days (but then again we are not talking about bananas here are we?)
My trusty SE W960i generates heat too but nothing that i would be worried about. In this 6500 slider's case, well its on for resale already...

Cheers

My N71 heated up when HTML browsing and long conversations. I think its when there's load on the battery

I goes back to what I said:
This is normal. This time consider the atomic theory if Iam not mistaken. Particles move, vibrate and generate heat
Extended usage of the device may result in exessive heat. Unless the heat is in extremes there is nothing to worry about

yes, it is normal for a phone to be warm after extended use. i have an old nokia 6260 that i used for a one hour phone call it is very warm after conversation but not too hot that it is uncomfortable to hold. now both my k800i and 6680 warms up during extended use. my other phone which my wife is now using, the 6300 is noticably more warmer after long calls, this is mainly because it has a metal battery cover that is more heat conductive.
