"This patent publication by Nokia has to be one of the weirdest cellphone patents that we have come across recently. What you see in the picture above is a phone that employs something called a Jacobs Ladder flipping hinge arrangement. Letting go of the confusing, long winding sentences and jargons used in patent applications, this cylindrical phone will also open like the current Communicators, hopefully to reveal a widescreen for watching videos or something."

how will this work?

I've got a glasses case that does that, so I know how it'll work.
Look the the three parts to it, the screen, the middle and the keypad. Well if they're flexible, as you open it (like a glasses case), once it reaches the part where most glasses cases would stop on their hinge, it keeps going, and rolls over itself until it closes up again, basically opening 360 degrees back onto itself.
However, when you do that, the surfaces will have changed to reveal the ones underneath the screen/keypad etc, ie a larger screen across the whole thing like the communicators.
Bear in mind guys this is just a patent, this kind of phone wouldn't really be developed for another few years yet

Just when I thought it could not get any worse than it is in the design department at Nokia. That is beyond weird!

design over function. I bet they will dub it 'the gift from the God'

Interesting design. Not sure what to make of it.
It's the same as in the Prism series that Nokia came out with earlier this year. Everyone ridiculed it. Guess what, SE and now even HTC have copied clues and hints from it. So don't start making fun of it just yet.

Looks more like a time capsule than a phone. Not going to be very comfy having that in your pocket.

Ok, people need to remember this is an example of what the patent is. They're never going to make a phone that looks like this, it's a simple example of how the patent works for the patent office's sake.
The real phones that may, or may not, be based on this design will not look like this or be that size/shape.

So we are likely to see a phone with this then sometime in the future.
Jacobs Ladder flipping hinge. (is this the patent)

I dunno, possibly, but they put this kind of patent in years and years in advance, prolly wont see it for a good 10 years minimum.
They put loads of these in every year, simply to stop other manufacturers copying the idea thats all.

Don't knock 'design over function'. It never did the likes of Apple or Virtu any harm, did it?
