Finally, my iPhone is back with me - well a replacement anyways

Right now all seems to be working well EXCEPT App Store

If I try to connect using 3G I still get the App Store currently unavailable message. And followed by Cannot retrieve download info. please connect with itunes.

I've syn'd and registered the phone with my iTunes and still not having any luck.

Any advice or help much appreciated

Posted by masseur
I don't know if its relevant, but when you connected with itunes, did you do a restore or did you tell itunes this was a new phone?

Posted by scouser_75
Hi Masseur, i said it was a new iphone.

Posted by zootzoot
does anyone else have a problem with the iphone 3g signal, it doesn't hold a signal very well. Also the battery on the iphone is a load of poop.
I can just about get a days use out of it.

AHHHH

I agree!!

Send it back Zoot and use the Bold again!

We all miss you!

there's a jailbreak app that allows you to do voip over 3g... something the carriers have delibrrately blocked.. not show if you can do the same to get the iplayer thing going...

As you've jailbroken, make sure you have BossPrefs installed, and have SSH turned off as that is a mega battery drainer. Without BossPrefs installed, you wont be able to toggle it on and off so this may be causing a problem

Also another good trick to conserve a bit of battery is when you're out of wi-fi areas turn wi-fi off as if you leave it on it'll constantly try to search for networks

Guys, when you click on Settings on your 3G iPhones do you get a lag of about 5 seconds before settings is launched?

Posted by nicv27
No not that I have noticed

Posted by RyaN
Yup...unfortunately so. Annoying but unavoidable unfortunately

Did you get your app store prob sorted?

Posted by scouser_75
Not a big worry so long as its normal After my last experience with the iPhone I'm just a little para!!

Ryan, nope. No luck with the App Store. Might give apple tech a call tomorrow to see if they can sort it.

Really strange cuz I had the same problem with my first iPhone!

Can access it no problem via wi-fi though

Posted by RyaN
Hmmm, tis strange that. I vaguely remember having similar problems when i first got my iphone... like couldnt get on, and receiving the same messages as you, but i think it was only for a day...

What settings have you got under Cellular Data Network?

Mate, i could never access App Store with EDGE and always used it on the Wifi anyway.

I got one of those mirror screen protectors and silicon cases today. Was getting bored of always having to slide the phone out of a leather case. Looks nice though!

Posted by bavlondon2
Can anyone reccomend some decent headphones/handsfree for iphone 3g? CPW dont have anything decent.

Anyone know how I might have managed to get 2 calenders. One has a red dot and the other a blue one (under calenders). Can't seem to see a difference between them. Not sure how I did it as it wasn't something I wanted!

Posted by smilerthe cheshirecat
I think you may have done it via your computer? I have several calendars on my iPhone... I use an Apple MacBook...

You can choose the wanted Calendar in iTunes once you iPhone is connected...

Select your iPhone in devices.... in iTunes....

Select the info tab... Scroll down to Calendar

There you can change which calendars are synced with you iPhone

Does the iPhone do Geo-Tagging? If so, how do I switch it on?

TIA

Posted by RyaN
Not sure about that carkitter - maybe someone else can help on that one

I only found this last night, but there is an update to biteSMS which offers landscape keyboard support, the ability to send contacts to recipients and also share your location with someone else. Also you can send/receive url's via sms which you'll be able to open up in safari. The beta version is available to test, just add this source in Cydia http://www.bitesms.com/cydia/beta

Posted by whentheleveebreaks
It does, amd i think it automatic if you are in GPS reception.

Posted by RyaN
Is that like when you go to take a picture and it pops up and asks 'Would you like to use your current location' ?

Yup. But you have to leave Location Services On. Then everytime you go into the Camera App it'll geo tag.

But leaving Location Services on will hit your battery life a bit!

whilst I'm here...

erm, is anyone having any problems receiving emails in Fetch mode when the phone is Sleeping?

I've got emails set to Fetch Every Hour - but when the phone is in Sleep mode the emails don't come through. But as soon as I wake the phone voila!

Posted by RyaN
Hmm... mine doesnt seem to have a problem picking up emails in fetch mode. Even in sleep mode, i get a little 'ting' noise or a vibrate when an email is received

Posted by scouser_75
Thanks Ryan.

Hmmmmm!!! Strange - again!!!

I done some Googling and it seems some people do have a problem with Fetch mode.

Will try sending myself some more emails to test this out.........

Posted by RyaN
yeah well i've learned that it is a common problem, and Apple have even acknowledged that there is a problem with this. Strange that it doesnt seem to happen with everyone. As always, you'll have to hope it's fixed in the next fw update! (which shouldn't be long actually)

Posted by scouser_75
And now that I've put this post up, guess what just happened a few minutes ago? I received 2 emails - whilst the phone was in sleep mode!!!

iPhone, you sure are a strange and temperamental beast!!!!

Role on 2.2 Though no doubt this will come with its own quirks though!!!

haha you spoke to soon!

Strange you should say this, as I said exactly the same thing a couple of days ago to a friend of mine. He was asking whether I'd recommend an iPhone. And, as him and me bought our P800's together I told him "remember the fun factor of the P800? Well, the iPhone is the same"

Posted by RyaN
haha quality. Yeah it really was the good old days. I still have mine - albeit in bits - in my drawer. I pushed the screen through and never got round to replacing it. I was reading through my old PM's last night, and it brought back some good memories from that era

Whilst trying to veer back on topic, i was reading that a german iphone blog thinks that the 2.2fw update should arrive in the next 5 days or so

Posted by scouser_75
Too many rumours! But lets hope this one is spot on.

There are far too many glitches with 2.1 (most of which, no doubt, will not be fixed in any future firmware)!!

Posted by RyaN
Well the beta of 2.2 was dished out a while ago, so it really shouldn't be long.

The only glitches i have problems with is the safari crashes. Other than that i think 2.1 has definitely been the most stable fw for a while

Has anyone installed iSteamy from Cydia yet? LOL i have

Posted by scouser_75
sorry. I meant glitches in a different kinda way

I meant things such as certain apps not going back to a default setting - eg when you view an sms and exit the app without going back to the main sms screen, the next time you go into sms you are back at the last message you looked at!

same with contacts, safari etc

But as mentioned on here before, these things are most likely gonna remain as they are.

Posted by RyaN
hmm mine always goes back to the default main SMS screen when i exit out when in a message. Unless i have manually turned Backgrounding on...

Whilst i was typing this post i just checked it out to test and i just realised that it's biteSMS that goes back to the main default screen and the stock SMS app goes back to place you were at last! lol. Did you say you jailbroke your iphone? Maybe this might be a small help to your niggles? Obviously mail, contacts etc is still a prob for you. The only alternative is to force quit everytime you exit the app

Posted by scouser_75
I really would love to jailbreak... and I almost did. But after my last incident with the iphone I really do not want anything to go wrong with it again. Can't justify sending back to and from Italy again

I know the phone didnt go wrong because of the jailbreak - in fact, it went wrong before the jailbreak - but if anything were to happen again I would be truly gutted.

The one downside of having a non uk iPhone!

Posted by RyaN
Yeah i can totally understand your concerns there matey! The jailbreak wont harm it though, so it's up to you. But i know what you mean, it's working now in it's current state... and the thought of restoring it and jailbreaking etc and the possibility of something not working properly again is too much!

Posted by SloopJohnB
´I meant things such as certain apps not going back to a default setting - eg when you view an sms and exit the app without going back to the main sms screen, the next time you go into sms you are back at the last message you looked at! ´

That´s actually a feature, not a bug... Apple´s apps ´save and quit´ instead of just quitting. It´s the iphone´s interface, it 'behaves' like all apps are running at the same time without having to sacrifice memory or battery.

Posted by scouser_75
tell me if I'm being silly - but, say for example I have just read an SMS and then I exit. Then a few minutes later I want to send an sms to someone else, I go back into SMS. At this point I would want the SMS App to be at the main screen where I can just select New SMS (or select another SMS). I don't really want to be faced with the SMS I read a few minutes earlier and to then have to back track to the main screen.

I know it's only a matter of a few (max) touches of the screen, but it makes no sense.

Same with email, safari, phone...

I like the iphone, dont get me wrong, but its just little things which make it a bit of a PITA

Posted by Scoobyd
So with regard to the upcoming 2.2 firmware does anyone know what this is likely to bring? All I've heard so far is things like street view to the maps etc. Nothing that's going to particularly improve on the actual user interface of things like the sms etc.

I'd really like an iphone myself. Lots of my friends have one and I have the 32GB Touch myself so know all about its 'non phone' features. But it's the phone features, or lack of, that have stopped me from making the plunge so far.

The sms app lacks basic features and I just don't get why.

Forwarding a text message, how hard can that be to add?

Delivery reports. I always have these on and they come in very handy for me a lot of the time. A simple feature on any phone and one that I'd miss.

And as much as I like the way the sms app keeps a conversation thread between two people it drives me mad that you can't delete individual messages from the thread. You have to either delete the entire thread or nothing at all. Crazy. You could end up with loads of meaningless messages from someone such as 'hi, how are you' or 'see you later' but amongst that might be some you want to keep. Again how hard can it be to add this? It's the little things!!

Landscape text entry for sms and email.

Copy & paste... zzzzzz

The ability to create groups in contacts and then be able to sms or email that group instead of having to go and add every recipient individually from contacts. A basic feature that should be there.

mms. I know a lot of people aren't too bothered but it's still something that a lot of people use and would miss, me included, and should be on there.

Everything I've mentioned there is surely a very simple software fix, they're pretty much all things that a lot of people would like to see added so why the hell don't they?! I just don't understand how after several software revisions Apple still haven't bothered to address any of these simple issues yet will release new firmware with something like street view.

Until the iphone becomes as good as doing the basic phone tasks that pretty much any phone can do let alone a smartphone then I can't see me making the plunge. No matter how good the rest of it is. And that winds me up... because I want one!!!

Posted by RyaN
I can see what you're saying, but on the other hand say you we're typing an sms or an email and you got a phone call and when you went back to it, it was on the main screen and you lost the text/email? How annoying would that be?

Or if you're typing a message out, and you needed to check something out on safari before sending the message so you have to exit out. And when you go back in to SMS it's lost your message. How irritating would that be?

I find that it's very useful. Normally if i'm looking at mail, i always tap to go back to the inbox before i exit, it's kinda become automatic. If not it's no biggie to just go back, it's not like the interface is sluggish or non-responsive

Posted by scouser_75
almost true there dude.

But, most phones give you the option to Save to Draft if you exit midway through an SMS or email.

Or, like with WM, you can just click to check programmes running in the background and click on it to bring it back. But I know Apple would never incorp this

But to change this to another App; Safari. Now there's something that really should have at least a Home Screen! Yes?

Or, even more relevant, the Phone App should at least default back to the dialer screen! Yes?

Just the minor things guys. Just the minor things Still loving the phone though

@Scooby, it's very unlikely that 2.2 is going to address anything other than 'bug fixes' and add a stupid little google box in safari and crappy 'street view' in maps. Why they persist on working on silly little things like this rather than improving the things that they missed out on, even in the first iPhone, is beyond me.

I mean, if jailbroken apps like biteSMS can delete/forward SMS', landscape mode etc then it's possible and surely easy to implement in to the standard SMS app. They should look at the jailbreak apps in a positive manner, rather than a stubborn negative manner.

Copy and paste will probably never be available on this iphone, they seemed to have created this stripped down version of OSX with major flaws and limitations like the inability to have things running in the background. Again, this is something that the jailbreak has exploited and shown that it is possible, yet Apple seem to ignore this and carry on as usual. I truly believe that in the next couple of years, they'll release an iPhone with one of the selling points being copy and paste

LOL! LOL! LOL!

And guess what now!!!

Yup. No longer Fetching emails again!

I give up. Will just wait for Apple to fix Push. In the mean time I'll just wake the phone every hour instead!!

@Scoobyd

If you already have a iPod Touch then don't go anywhere near an iPhone. There is so much useful stuff missing that its only the big screen and multi-touch UI that keeps me interested. If you have a Mac you may gain some extra benefit from syncing the two but not that much more than you already get from the Touch.

@all

I have Location Services setting to on but stil no option to Geo-tag. Help?

I think it´s a matter of personal taste. Imo the phone app should default back to favorites instead of the dialer which I never use. I don´t miss a home screen on safari because it´s suppose to remember the last pages i´ve visited and I like that.
But I see your point. The problem with Apple is not its interface or design choices, they are usually very good and user-friendly, even the background tasks (which DOES exist but are automatic) thing can be very convenient to the battery/memory and also ease of use. The problem is there´s NO choice. You have to cope with what apple puts in front of you. It would be great to change how apps behave or to able to turn background tasks to ´manual´ instead of ´automatic´ sometimes.
Apple should also improve the basic apps to please its existing customers instead of coming up with ´new´ stuff all the time to attrack buyers. That´s why fw 2.2 will have ´street view´ and no landscape typing through out the system or a better sms client. That way apple can say the iphone is ´cool´ because it has street view just like the google phone. Bullshit. Who really wants street view?? I wanna be able to delete an individual call log instead of having to delete everything, is that too much to ask? Sometimes the iphone gets on my nerves and I start seeing nokia´s phones with bright eyes but then... they don´t have multitouch.. the screen is smaller, no ipod, no itunes... Damn!!
