I Pm'd tmag.... ask him for the info.

You can do it in itunes. There a vid on youtube that shows you how to do it.

Yep too right. Pointless updates tbh... they should think about improving other stuff like the SMS app for instance. Not fancy street maps on google.

Copy and paste is probably the no.1 thing people want....

http://www.iringer.net/

very easy and straight forward converter

tho if you want to use an existing song in your library, its just a matter of renaming the extension to m4r or m4a, i cant remember which one

Posted by RyaN
^^ yep, thats what i do, you have to ammended the start and finish times to the song, and have it no more than 30 seconds. Then right click it while still in itunes, and browse for the file, and change the extension from .m4a to .m4r and drag it in to itunes. Main thing to remember after you've done this is to change the original song in your itunes back to the right start and finish times.

Also make sure you have the 'Ringtones' selection checked within the options in itunes

Lads, can someone recommend a good Word viewer?

I've heard of Discover - but it's had mixed reviews.

I don't mind paying for a good app as I really do need one - pref with editor (but I think this is an impossibility!)

Thanks

Posted by NoKia
i am not sure if you there is an editor available,
i use airsharing for document storing and viewing files and it works perfectly, it takes most formats, it was free when i got it, but you have to pay for it now, unless you are naughty

discover works similar to airsharing and is free, i havent had any esperience with it though

I use the same. Problem is when you have used Viigo, the above seems a bit pants.

On that note, anyone got any others?

Help please
Is there a easy way to put sms tones onto the iphone?

Can put sms tones on the iPhone at the moment.

@zootzoot Thats just an alternative to Intelliscreen, it's not a theme as such. To install themes, you'll need to install Winterboard first from Cydia, and then you can install any theme you want either from Cydia (browse the Themes folders) or download any Winterboard theme from the net and dump it in /var/stash/THEMES/* (although i'm aware you may not be fully aware of SSHing in to your iPhone! )

Once you've downloaded a theme, you'll need to apply it in Winterboard...then exit and bobs your uncle

Posted by zootzoot
Thanks Ryan. all this messing about is doing my head in.

how do you (dump it in /var/stash/THEMES/*) is it done through winterboard..

cheers
andy

Posted by RyaN
No for that method you have to use a program on your PC to dump the themes in, like WinSCP

This is only if you want to do it this way

The easier way would be to look in Cydia for themes and download themes that way. There loads to choose from

Posted by whentheleveebreaks
Cant decide weather or not to pwn my iPhone or not. The only thing i want it for is intelliscreen

Posted by RyaN
Yeah Intelliscreen is awesome. The best application i've installed since QuickGold. For one thing though? I'd say it's not worth it just for one thing...

Posted by Berry
Course its worth it...you'll only kick yourself if you dont...

You're more likely to kick yourself when you jailbreak tomorrow, and then Apple release 2.2 on Wednesday... (not saying it will be Wednesday, but it's looking fairly imminent).

I'd take newer/better firmware over some fancy wallpaper any day of the week. Besides, the Iphone's home screen is a design classic, why mess with it at all?

i could never use this phone unjailbroken, there are too many little basic flaws that jailbraking solves, and i have grown used to it
if 2.2 comes out i would rather wait till its jailbroken before updating, i think i can survive without google sidewalk and podcast downloads for a few days

Posted by scouser_75
Jail break has to be done - even if only for categories and 5 item dock

If the newer firmware is more valuable to me to unjailbreak it then so be it, i would go back but unless it's going to have core functionality with regards to MMS, and SMS functions etc and not stuff that is pointless to me then i would totally agree with you.

The whole iphone design is class and i wouldnt change many things.

It seems this a common misconception where jailbreaking is concerned. Generally people believe that the only advantage of jailbreaking is for a few themes. As mentioned jailbreaking releases a whole load of functionality that was missed out (mms, sms fwd/delete, etc etc)

This firmware really isnt gonna bring anything to the table other than some fancy google maps, and the current 2.1 is the most stable since 1.1.4 so i'm more than happy to stay where i am at the moment. It won't be long before 2.2 is jailbroken as the same exploit used in previous firmware versions is still working, so nothing has been written in to the firmware to try and combat this....it'll be a case of a few days before the jb is released

Posted by Boinng
2.1 seems pretty solid on the whole, but I'm getting slightly annoyed with the Safari crashes, which I'd hope 2.2 would solve (it certainly contains some cosmetic changes to Safari, so hopefully it'll address the stability issues too).

I know the list of tweaks that jailbreaking can allow (better SMS etc) but in all honesty, I'm not too fussed by any of those issues. I'm all for better firmware though.

Posted by RyaN
Yeah the safari crashes annoy me too. What also annoys me is the fact it has a problem remembering passwords, like for instance logging in to Esato... log in once, click PM's and have to log in again, hit reply and you have to enter your password again before sending the message then to view PM's again you have to log in once more. Pain in the bum!

Also what would be a better update for Safari would be to bring out flash support rather than a 'permanantly there' google box. Pointless imo.

Posted by Berry
I never had a safari crash yet. Hmmm

Actually I think that is a problem with the forum. I often get that.

Posted by RyaN
@bav... yeah it's pretty annoying, but i guess if it's a forum related prob there's not much that can be done

Posted by masseur
are you using full html esato? (i.e. www.esato.com)

I still use mobile esato on the iphone (mobile.esato.com)

I've also never had safari crash either

Posted by RyaN
Yeah using the full html version. I will probably try using the mobile.esato.com link next time! Kinda forgotten about that, since the last time i had a 'normal' phone!

I boguht iChess on the weekend and honeestly its the best game I have ever played on any phone haha Such a simple game but so thrilling!!! Im still new to chess but I beat the computer for the first time this morning on the train into work.

Posted by Boinng
I can't say the "full" version of Esato ever presents any problem, it's still pretty lightweight as far as modern web sites go - it's the javascript heavy pages that tend to crash it in my experience. It's for Apple to fix anyway, Safari should be able to handle the full version of anything.

Posted by bavlondon2
I have always found (with any phone) that if you switch it on/off once or twice a week then you won't encounter any crashes.

Not a problem with the iPhone... i probably reboot it a couple of times a day!

@Boinng I was just referring to the log in problems with the full html www.esato.com...think it seems to be a problem on the iphone and the site. But yeah, safari should be able to handle anything thats thrown at it... especially flash

Mine crashes several times a day, even when connected via wifi.
A Vodafone rep said it was a known problem caused by moving from cellsite to cellsite and getting 'stuck' during the handover. Perhaps the same thing happens when moving from router to router at Uni?
Anyway, I'm praying that 2.2 fixes it and I agree other less important tweaks can wait. I also have issues with passwords, pleased I'm not alone.

End of Jailbreaking......

Apple's new iTunes surprise: No more jailbreaking
Posted by Matt Asay

You just bought a new MacBook Pro. You can't wait to pull it out of the box and sync it with your shiny new iPhone. Perhaps you travel abroad a lot, and you can't afford to pay AT&T's insane international roaming rates (Who can?). Or perhaps you have an application that Apple won't provide you through its App Store but that can be installed on a jailbroken phone.

If you have a new MacBook, you may be out of luck. If you have Windows, however, you should be fine. The irony is stifling.

Gizmodo is reporting that Apple has found a novel way to prevent the jailbreaking of its iPhones, one that no cracking of the iPhone firmware is going to fix. This time, Apple apparently is using a custom build of iTunes in the newest MacBook line to stymie attempts to jailbreak iPhones:

The new aluminum MacBooks...don't seem to be able to recognize an iPhone or iPod Touch when it is booted into DFU mode, a vital requirement for jailbreaking...Though the hardware is where one sees the most conspicuous changes in the new MacBook, this problem most likely stems from a subtle software modification. It's not clear what specifically changed, but a new build of iTunes, unique to the new MacBooks, seems like a likely culprit.

In this iPhone cat-and-mouse game, Apple seems to be turning to ever more ingenious methods to keep cash rolling in the door. Customers? Well, their best bet for circumventing Apple's wily ways is to jailbreak the iPhone using Windows-based iTunes.

How ironic (and sad) is that? The more we buy into Apple, the less freedom. Sounds like Microsoft, doesn't it? This time, however, it's worse, because Apple also controls the hardware.

Hmmm...

Well sadly for Apple, Quickpwn was created so the restoring of custom firmware through itunes is no longer necessary so they might not be as clever as they think! The dev team are always a step ahead

And once it's jailbroken, even if you needed to restore a custom firmware to an iphone/ipod touch, you dont need to put it in to DFU mode, just a shift+click on restore and away you go...

Posted by NoKia
the Dev team are always one step ahead

on a serious note, this is one of the reasons i dislike apple as a company and the way they manage the whole iphone business, they cripple the phone refuse to give the most basic of capabilities and expend all this time and energy into trying to stop people from improving it
i will not feel guilty the next time i install a cracked app

Posted by DragonEye
i love apple and it's stupid tactics.. guess they want all the iphone users out there to give up on the new macs and switch back to pc's...

Posted by bavlondon2
They mananged to lock out unlocking altogether on the 3G model so who knows what they have up their sleeve next.

Posted by RyaN
How so? The dev team are close to an unlock the last time i heard...

Posted by bavlondon2
Really? That's good news. Shows what I know haha.

Posted by NoKia
just been playing around with an N96 and realised that you can watch and download bbc iplayer programs over 3g as well as wifi, maybe i am using it wrong?? but i can only ever watch it over wifi on the iphone

Posted by bavlondon2
Yep iphone is just WIFI only.

Posted by NoKia
thats a bummer, i wonder if this was an apple decision or O2, becuase even an N96 on O2 will be able to watch it over 3g
