did you get the font thing done ok?

Posted by RyaN
That's the metallic slider case i think http://www.goincase.com/products/detail/slider-case-cl59059
Wait....which one are you going for the placcy one or the metal one? lol

Just going to have a little look at the fonts now

I'm loving Intelliscreen atm, installed it yesterday and it's better than i ever thought it would be. Sometimes it's a pain to have to unlock your phone just to check an email thats not important and it's nice to be able to check it on the lockscreen

Posted by NoKia
hmmmm looks kinda different there, thats why i was hoping they had it in the apple store so i could see what it looked like, it looked darker metalic in the ilounge review

i had seen intelliscreen but i havent got round to installing it, so its that good? there are so many things to try out on the iphone, never had phone with sooo many options and enhancements!

Posted by RyaN
sweet got the font working I'm interested to know how it worked as there was a load of different fonts in the cache folder already, and the same fonts as well, and obviously after copying them over and rebooting they worked! How does it know how to apply the fonts? hmm

Yeah intelliscreen is wicked, i've had it on my pc for ages and like you just never got round to installing it, but pleased i did now. As well as your email, you can get news feeds and by swiping across the story you want it pops open a half screen size bubble like a mini browser so you can view the story. I recommend giving it a go

yeah i know, i think the iphone has the ability to change to the different fonts but apple havent enabled it yet, cus i cant see any reason why all fonts will be in there, unless they are just used for website and document rendering, helivicta must be the default font it uses, so any other font we want to used must be renamed to that and it still thinks its uing the default
i will try and get intelliscreen installed this weekend

Posted by RyaN
Yeah I found a little guide on t'internet and realised that Helvetica and HelveticaBold are used at the main system fonts. The lock screen clock uses a different one for example. Gonna have a general mess around with it and try some different fonts out over the next few days.

I like that font you gave me though.... not too illegable and it gives a funky look

I'm liking the 'new' bossprefs type toggle switcher for the springboard SBSettings, much quicker to toggle ssh and wifi than opening boss prefs

Posted by NoKia
do you get any battery drainage from sbsettings? i was waiting for an update on the beta stage before i installed it, but it does look really good

Question for the iphone owners please. My current Voda contract expired this week so I'm free to get a new phone and the iphone is close to being the one I go for. Not happy about having to go over to O2 if I do but not seeing any other option sadly.

My main concern though is texting. I have to use sms a lot and one of the most important features for me is delivery reports. I'm told the iphone doesn't have delivery reports? Is this true and if so is there a way of getting them without having to put the code before the number every time? Also I was told it can't do texts to groups? Or to multiple contacts? Or forward texts?

Now I've got an iPod Touch 32GB so I know how great the device is for the web, music, videos, and the app store is great. And I often think I should just get the iPhone so I can have it all in one device. But from what I've read on it the actual phone part of it is really, really basic and missing a lot of features that make me scratch my head as to why they've been omitted.

So I'm really tempted to get one. But at the same time am worried about compromising the phone side of things... which at the end of the day is what it ultimately is!!

Posted by MWEB
Only real thing missing is MMS, vital to some, not to others, call quality is loud and clear, that's what you use a phone for really
My son in law got one last week so i'm getting some experience with his, he likes it, and that's coming from an innov8

Posted by Scoobyd
mms isn't such an issue as pics etc can be sent by email I guess. So it does have delivery reports, sms to groups/multiple contacts and forwarding of texts then?

Posted by masseur
delivery report only by the prefix method.

it doesn't have the other stuff you mention, unless you jailbreak and install an app (can't remember the name but it was mentioned in this thread a day or two back)

Posted by RyaN
@Nokia
No noticable drainage of battery to report here... just the usual daily charge! My battery actually seems to be holding out pretty well today, only 1/4 gone and been using it most of the day checking emails, few texts etc.

@ScoobyD
Regarding sending group messages, you can do this just using the stock SMS app. Regarding your other two questions, the answer is yes but only after you jailbreak. There's two alternative SMS apps which are both good for different reasons. They both allow forwarding of messages, and one has a setting where you can input the #0* or whatever it is so you'll receive a notification of delivery, without having to type it everytime you write a text

Posted by NoKia
you can get a fully featured text messaging features like forwarding, delivery reports etc thru third party apps like bitesms, irealsms, once you jailbreak it
the standard sms app does not do this

Posted by masseur
@RyaN, in the stock iphone, how do you send to a group without having to key in each name individually each time?

Posted by RyaN
oh no, you have to key in each name but thats what i presumed was being asked, just whether you can send a texts to a group of contacts

Posted by Scoobyd
Ah ok... that's just sending to multiple contacts individually as opposed to being able to set up a group of people in contacts and just send a group sms to those contacts.

So basically the stock sms can't do any of these basic features. I've also just read that it doesn't even have an outbox or drafts or sent items etc? Can't believe just how basic the sms app is if that's true. And why would they do that?

So if I get the phone from O2 can it be jailbroken easily and is this something most people do? I presume there's no risk attached to this or any negative points? And once it's jailbroken I can get an sms app that will give me back all the features that I need.

Scoobyd - As a heavy Blackberry user i can safely say the iPhone has surpassed my expectations.

I wanted to hate it with a vengence, but i cant and whilst i genuinely dont believe its better than a Blackberry, i would certianly say it comes very close.

There are various niggles (as with most phones) that have work arounds and in your case the jailbreaking is the way to go. I use Swirly MMS for MMS sending and receiving and it works for what i need. The alternative SMS programs also work well.

The keyboard was my biggest fear but as many have stated, it becomes very easy to use.

On the media side of things its awesome and that primarily what it is...a media device.

I would have to say i think you would be suitably impressed if you took the plunge...

This is coming from a hardcore BlackBerry user and fan....

(let me just go and slap myself )

The stock SMS app is very basic indeed, all your messages from the same person stay in one complete conversation. No inbox, drafts, sent items. But sms's do sort of stay in 'draft' form if for instance you have to come out of the app, next time you tap on the person in your inbox your part-typed message pops up again.

There are no risks with jailbreaking with regarding to bricking or damaging the phone. Only prob is it will invalidate your warranty, like if you give it back to Apple in a jailbroken state. However, returning it to a non-jb state is just as easy as jailbreaking

@zootzoot

All of these will obviously require you to jailbreak...

For copy and paste, you'll need to install CopierciN. It works by importing the SMS, Email or Note in to the application and then exporting it to either one of those three when you're done. Video recording, the best one available is Cycorder. I'm too sure about a task manager, someone else might have to help on that front!

So what did you go for, 8 or 16gb...black or white?

Posted by zootzoot
Thanks ryan and tom for your help.
I ordered a 8gb 3g iphone, i'am a hardcore blackberry fan but i'am willing to give the iphone a chance and see what it can do.

If tom (tmag) can be converted i suppose anyone can...

Cheers
Andy

Posted by RyaN
you'll love it... take tmag's word for it!

Posted by Berry
YOu'll like it Andy. Just remember its not a BB and does everything differently but its great!

NO one does email like a BB but the iphone handles it all well.

I think you will be more impressed with the 3g as i am a pauper with only a 2g.

Posted by RyaN
yeah...wtf are you doing in here tom..this is an iphone 3g thread

Posted by Berry
I see how it its.....

Posted by zootzoot
Its just arrived.
Will it work if i put in my o2 sim. do i have to do anything for it to work.

Posted by RyaN
you'll need to activate it with itunes

Posted by NoKia
@RyaN

installed the SBsettings last night, its amazingly fast unlike bossprefs
i havent noticed any extra lag or battery drainage so i will watch for a few days, if no issues i might just get rid of bossprefs

Posted by RyaN
I've only noticed once when i turned ssh on with it, it didnt actually turn on, and went in to bossprefs to check it and it was off. Sometimes that happens with bossprefs anyway.

The best thing with it is when you're already in safari or cydia or something and realise you havent switched wi-fi back on, a quick swipe across the top and you can sort it without having to exit and return the the springboard. Can even do it on the lockscreen!

Posted by NoKia
yup, very handy! my only worry was that it was constantly held in memory so it would cause some lag, but i havent experienced any yet

did you have to pay for intelliscreen?

Haha, I bet thousands of people have done the same. Maybe that's what brought the iPhone 3G into being, but I doubt doing it now will make any difference at all.

And thanks tom for helping too.

Posted by RyaN
Sweet as a nut. No probs... Forgot you needed the 2.1fw on your hard drive for quickpwn to work Pleased you've got it sorted. Now you'll spend ages installing all the goodies from Cydia

Posted by Berry
Well done mate. Now you dont have to throw it across the room.

Posted by NoKia
any one else on O2 experiencing problems with the 3G connection today?

Posted by RyaN
yeah - trying to dl a theme off Cydia and it wont let me

More to do with the source though i think...

What you specifically having probs with, or is it just anything?

Posted by NoKia
just completely lost the 3g symbol, and i cant get onto the internet at all

Posted by RyaN
Ahh... did that to me the other day.

Try using bossprefs and toggle edge and 3g on and off a few times and possibly a reboot as well. Should sort itself out.

Posted by NoKia
