Bother. After all the indecision in buying an iphone, when i finally decided and went to buy the turbo sim the bloomin' thing is sold out!!!
Will have to wait another week now..........................................
Posted by scouser_75
PS Is this following true?
I believe that some iPhones out there are refurbished models. These refurbs come in a different colour box (white I think) and the brand spanking new models come in black box (I think).
Ive seen a couple of black models going cheap on ebay near where I live so I can go and pick up in person after checking them out. But I wanted to make sure I didnt get a refurbed handset as some of these black models actually have a white box! So nothing to do with the colour of the phone itself.
Posted by smilerthe cheshirecat
I believe that maybe true... I think that the black models in white boxes... would also be the undecorated white boxes too... so no apple logos like the retail boxes...
But mine did come with a white box.... with logo... and the white back too

Right, yet another question boys - sorry.
Would anyone recomend buying an OFFICIALLY unlocked iphone 16gb from Italy?
I have the opportunity to do so but need some advice before doing so please.
It's a few quid more than the PAYG iPhone 16gb but hey, its fully unlocked
My main concerns are a) If this is fully legit and if the phone will work fully on my tmobile sim
b) Will i need to spend more money on a new mains supply?
c) ... ... well, those are my concerns unless someone can raise other ones
Posted by RyaN
Yeah that one will definitely be fully unlocked, afaik they cant sell locked mobiles in Italy... so it will defo work with your t-mobile sim
With regard to the power supply, you should be alright just using a euro-uk plug adaptor.
Posted by scouser_75
Thanks Ryan.
So, the actual iPhone from Italy doesn't have to be registered first in Italy before it goes out of the shop UNLOCKED?
I may just make this guy an offer for the phone
Posted by RyaN
errmm not sure on that front, but i'm sure that shouldnt matter as it will be unlocked either way
Posted by Boinng
Of course the fact that Iphones in Italy are unlocked (if that indeed is a fact) doesn't begin to prove that particular offer is "fully legit" and not just some scam artist waiting for your money. Just saying - I'd check things out very carefully and look for some hard evidence that other people have got their phones before sending that amount of money abroad.
The Iphone (and those desperate for an unlocked version) must be the number 1 target for scammers right now.

yeah definitely. Good advice there Boinng, i would tread very carefully if buying an iPhone from abroad via eBay
Posted by RyaN
So what did you do scouser...did you put a bid in?

I would never purchase/use an iphone on anything other than O2, buying an expensive phone and then diddling it therefore invalidating the warranty is not a sensible thing to do IMO, i won't buy an iphone until they start selling them sim-free in the UK, so i have a very long wait

...and in the meantime you're missing out on all the fun
I've never used a device for so much of the day before, except a pc

HeHe well Masseur, if "fun" was my #1 priority in a mobile then i'd be right in there
However, i need my device to emulate my PC whilst i'm away from it, in that area, the iphone has a few shortcomings.
Posted by masseur
true, and I mentioned exactly that in this thread just last week which is why I always have a WM device by my side.
I've carried at least 2 devices for years so may as well make one for fun and one for business...
Posted by Boinng
It's a little over a fortnight till I'm allowed mine (birthday present). I'll be getting it on O2 since it's as fair a contract as any - the £30pm will suit me well. By the time that contract is up in 18 months, there's bound to be a way to unlock it for free anyway, and if not - well - ebay will still want it even if I don't.

The prices are holding up very well on Ebay, so that sounds like a good plan, and a very nice present Boinng
Posted by masseur
there's an unlock for it now (sort of). I use a turbo sim type thingy to insert my tmob sim in crappy O2 areas... and that doesn't void warranty or anything as when you take it out the phone is exactly as it was before

Yea g, if i had a quid for every time i saw that, or a variant of it, i could retire rich and happy,
Great idea that Masseur.

What do the experienced iphone users amongst us think of this. I'm due an upgrade from my N95 8GB soon with Vodafone. I'd really like to buy into the iphone experience next as everyone I know that has one has never looked back. But I don't want to leave Voda and I don't want to sign up to an 18 month contract with O2. And I do want a 3G iphone.
I know there's several countries that sell the iphone officially unlocked by Apple. I've heard they cost around £450 in this form? I'm thinking I could upgrade to something like a Nokia N96 or BB Storm and sell that brand new to recoup a large amount of that iphone cost. Then I have an officially unlocked iphone for not a huge amount of money that I can use my Voda sim in? And I presume there wouldn't be any issues with using my Voda sim in it, no loss of features? Other than visual voicemail I'd expect.
Am I missing anything here? And where's the best place to get an officially unlocked one from? Ideally straight from the Apple store in one of those countries I should think.

Not yet dude. Still working on it. I currently have a couple of options
One is an OFFICIALLY unlocked iphone from Italy.
The other option is a UK model with a turbo sim. But the latter is asking for a little too much - £450 - which is about £40 more than what I would if I bought a brand new PAYG handset with a £10 turbo sim. I'm gonna tell the guy this and see if he drops his price a touch.
Will keep you all updated
PS Strewth all mighty!!! In prep for my imminent iPhone I just had a look at the App Store and OH MY GOSH
I wish I had the time to look through all of em

@ScoobyD I think that would be your best bet, to upgrade to something of high value and sell it on, and use to money to put towards an iPhone. I guess the decision on whether or not to buy an officially unlocked one or to buy a O2 payg one using a turbo sim really depends on the price you can get an unlocked one for. Personally i think £450 is far too much for it. Masseur uses a turbo sim and afaik hasnt reported any problems with using it at all, so that could be a better option for you
@scouser_75
yeah there are a hell of a lot of apps on the app store now! Generally most of the good ones will be in the Top 10/Top 25 and obviously it's always good to check out the user reviews to get an idea of whether theyre worth download.
Keep us updated with your purchase!
@Trev... i think what he's doing in that vid is connecting his iPhone to his computer so that he can control the volume on the phone. Why though, i dont know! Sounds a pretty pointless thing to do, but i guess it just displays an actual use for the bluetooth outside of just being able to connect a headset

Ryan, in preparation for the imminent arrival of my iPhone I’ve been trying to locate the Categories theme you recommended. But no matter how much I Google I still can’t seem to find it.
Any chance you could point me in the right direction for Categories… and any other software you think I should have?
I’m assuming I’ll need to Jailbreak the phone first, right?
Thanks

Yeah i understand your point about inputting a number, having to open up the phone app, then the keyboard tab...it takes a tad longer than just typing in the number straight away. With the regard to the texting - it gets better trust me! It just takes some getting used to, but the word correction is very good on it so if you just mis-type a letter, carry on typing and it'll correct the word at the end.
I can answer one of your concerns, cos this is one things thats keeps me on a jailbroken iphone, an application called Categories... i too couldn't stand having apps everywhere, and all different types jumbled up. This is a simple way of finding what you want pretty quickly, and keeps everything neat and organised in folders

oh no, that theme is called Leopard OSX... Categories is just an application you download on to a jailbroken iphone/touch that enables the folders.
Basically there is an app called Cydia which will install when you jailbreak and you download all the little programs like that through there.
Theres hundreds of other themes you can choose from to customise your look...

PS Check this app out - it looks pretty darned useful

Yeah, I've tried stack but I prefer categories tbh. Currently there's no support for 5 icons in your dock with stack and it only really works best with 2 icons in your dock which kinda defeats the object of the dock imo. Hopefully an update will be coming for it soon cos I really do like the flashy-ness of stack

As the excitement gathers for my iphone arrival, I was wondering what the best up-to-date football scores app is?
I've seen a fair few on app store but not sure what the best one is.
Posted by Scoobyd
iFooty is the one I use on my Touch and seems to be the most popular one.
Posted by smilerthe cheshirecat
iFooty was good... and due to licensing issues with the BBC.. they have have been reducing the amount of info you can get through it...
Instead linking you straight to the BBC... Shame... I liked it alot...

I'm pretty disappointed with the internet experience on my 8GB iPhone.
Have you guys sussed out Safari yet? Either I'm missing a whole lot of shortcuts and workarounds or Safari is a dog.
Is there a way to save and recall username and password details?
I've downloaded iChalky from the App store and he keeps my kids amused for ages!

Regarding the footy score posts, if you're running a jailbroken iphone, you should try out SoccerGuide which you can download via Cydia. You can get live scores in landscape mode, latest news from bbc sport or premiershiplatest via the app itself, up coming fixtures etc. It seems to work pretty well
@carkitter, i've never had any issue with safari, but you're right..it doesnt seem to save the password in the box if you log out etc. So you either have to leave it logged in or just have to log in everytime. Perhaps it's something to do with security why it doesnt keep a log of passwords?
Posted by carkitter
Some of the websites I log into won't allow retention of username and password and that's ok, but some like Esato and my university Wifi login can be saved and easily recalled on my Opera browser and I really like this shortcut. Also Safari doesn't seem to retain previously viewed webpages meaning that when you go back a step, it needs to reload the page which slows down browsing and increases data usage. It's rumoured that firmware 2.2 will have improvements to Safari so I'll wait and see if that improves things.
If not, I'll probably give this iPhone to my wife and get a G705 instead. The main reason I got the iPhone was for internet via Wifi and the calls+txts+data plan meant I could lower my account costs by 2/3rds. I'll definately keep the plan just not the phone... isn't that ironic?

Right, after waiting for what seems like years I should hopefully have my officially unlocked iPhone by close of play Friday
I want to jailbreak it pretty soon after getting it using QuickPwn so have been doing some research.
But I'm a little confused as there are a few differing variations on the Jailbreak process.
I found this link which seems pretty straight forward http://www.theiphoneblog.com/[....]-jailbreaking-101-mac-edition/
But as I have an OFFICIALLY UNLOCKED iPhone will I need to do anything differently?
When carrying out the Jailbreak process should I leave my tmobile sim in the phone or take it out before?
Also, in Part 6 of the process from the link above it asks "if you would like to replace the original boot and recovery logos on your iPhone". I don't want to have the Pineapple logo and want to keep the original Apple logo. BUT by selecting NO will this mean that I won't have Cydia and Winterboard either?
Finally, was there a different Jailbreak process between firmware 2.0 and 2.1?
Thanks lads in advance.

Basically Quickpwn is so easy and only takes a minute or two. You'll just need to update, or make sure that the iphone is running the latest 2.1fw first, and literally run the program and it'll take you through the steps. If your iphone is already unlocked, just dont check the box which says 'unlock'.
If you dont want the boot or recovery logos, just simply uncheck the box and it'll just use the default Apple logos. Cydia and Installer wont be affected by either choosing or not choosing the boot logos. These are on seperate check boxes
Posted by scouser_75
Thanks Ryan.
But I don't anywhere in the Jailbreak process where you have the option to "Unlock"! Or am I blind???
Also, do I leave my sim in or out?
Posted by RyaN
oh no...durrr... the penny just dropped on that one! It wont have the option if you've got a 3g iphone plugged in as there's no unlock for it yet
Dont think it'll matter whether you leave the sim in or not. Did my mates 2g one (unlocked/jailbroken) and left the sim in

OK. Maybe a knee jerk reaction me thinks!!!
Having done the maths, yes I did pay a few quid more than what I would have done if O2 offer the deal on a £35pm contract.
But then my tmobile contract is only 12 months after which I can always upgrade to a newer better iPhone if one is available, or I can just upgrade my tmobile phone and sell it
Posted by RyaN
is it just me or does anyone else have problems downloading apps via app store using 3g? 9 times out of 10 the app icon just sits there hanging on the springboard and the progress icon doesnt go up, and then it just pops up with a failed message. I'm in full 3g reception as well.
It makes me wonder whether the app store really only works best over a wifi connection
Posted by masseur
I've seen that, but only a couple of times. usually it just works fine
Posted by Berry
OK well not on 3g but my 2g fails 50% of the time. Its dependant on the typ on apps i find.
