Posted by whentheleveebreaks
You can do it. First you need to change the track length to no longer than 30 secs, then change the .m4p (I think) to .m4r

There are loads or guides on google if you need extra help

Posted by smilerthe cheshirecat
There is also a program on a mac... called iToner... which you can add ringtones to the iPhone... not sure if there is a version for a Windows PC....

found that but cant find a version for pc which is a shame

I used a program called iringer and it works like a dream. It loads the song and cuts it to 30 secs and auto loads it into itunes ringtones section. Very easy to use in windows

Posted by haynesycop
I have an article on how to convert an MP3 into a ringtone, it was in iCreate magazine for mac but can be adapted for PC users too, quite simple to do. Will try and dig it out for you Shelly, tonight if i remember, unless you've sorted it already.

Can anyone help me with this... It's from page 33 of this thread..

I am trying to sort out the settings for an iPod Touch's Exchange server settings and wonder if they are the same as the iPhone's.

In the Touch

Email -

Username ( it shows greyed out, Domain/User )

Password –

Description – which defaults to the email address that was input

After touching ‘next’, a new box appears for the server address to be added.

I can't get it to work, but I know people with the iPhone who use the same server and service...

I want to know if the fields are named differently. A link to the iPhone PDF manual would suffice

edit... ok got it now,......

but it doesn't tell me the fields.................

No its not locked to your sim, it will work fine with any o2 sim once its been activated.

Posted by bavlondon2
Has anyone noticed any cracks yet on theirs? Apple took down the thread and poll on their forum which got to around 16%. Thats quite a high number considering its only been out a few weeks.

Its a shame how much quality has been compramised in bringing the price down.

Posted by masseur
no cracks here

firmware 2.0.1 is out on itunes btw

Posted by Merlyn101
no cracks here either!
Haven't noticed any difference in the firmware version yet...

Posted by spikeyjac
Have any been Unlocked yet ?

Posted by Merlyn101
Not unlocked as yet for two reasons:
1) Waiting tip I'm sure there are no drawbacks.
2) Not really sure how to go about it!

Posted by Dogmann
Hi all,

Well it appears you can Jailbrake and add Clydia installer to the 3G even running 2.0.1 firmware but no unlock solution seems to have of appeared as yet.

Steve Jobs Confirms iPhone Has a Kill Switch

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has confirmed that the iPhone 3G has a kill switch that can remotely remove software from the devices.

Jobs told The Wall Street Journal that Apple needs the capability in case it inadvertently allows a malicious program -- such as an application that steals user's personal data -- to be distributed to iPhones through its App Store.

"Hopefully we never have to pull that lever, but we would be irresponsible not to have a lever like that to pull," Jobs said.

Switch Not Used

Jobs' statement reveals Apple hasn't used the kill switch yet, but the company did remove an application from the App Store last week.

Apple removed the $999 "I Am Rich" application, which had the sole purpose of showing people the owner has money. The program creates a red icon that sits on the iPhone deck with a the words "I Am Rich" underneath. After the user activates the application, it glows on the handset like a ruby.

Apple initially approved the application, which bumps up against the pricing limit for applications sold on its App Store. The company was not immediately available for comment on why it decided to pull the plug.

Disappearing Acts

But the real controversy started when Jonathan Zdziarski, author of the books iPhone Open Application Development and iPhone Forensics Manual, discovered a URL buried in Apple's firmware. That URL links to a file dubbed "unauthorizedApps" where malicious or simply bad apps might go once they disappear from the App Store.

According to Zdziarski, I Am Rich isn't the only app to disappear. BoxOffice (renamed to Now Playing) and NullRiver's NetShare were also removed. But removing the applications from the App Store and removing them from a consumer's iPhone are two different issues.

"The kill switch is a very controlling gesture. I am not sure why Apple didn't disclose it up front as simply a security measure," said Avi Greengart, an analyst at Current Analysis. "Consumers will accept an awful lot if you let them know what they are accepting."

What Else is Apple Hiding?

In the past, Jobs has said he wants to be careful not to allow applications to bring down the network. Greengart doesn't see that as a major threat, especially since Apple is approving the applications.

However, Greengart said he's less concerned with the "heavy-handed and Big Brotherish" kill switch than the fact that Apple didn't disclose it in the first place. As far as he knows, no other mobile phone has a kill-switch capability.

"To my way of thinking, the issue is that you don't really know what your phone might be doing or not be doing," Greengart said. "I am not 100 percent sure what the capability is or is not. That is the problem. What is the capability? When might they use it? When wouldn't they use it? Is there anything else Apple is not disclosing?"

iPhone firmware 2.0.2 out... "fixes bugs"!?

Posted by masseur
no.... its "bug fixes"! (as usual!)

anyway, I'm half way through so I'll see if I can see any difference.
still, its sort of nice not having to wait for a new jailbreak/unlock solution between updates....

He he.... snap me too Masseur....

Just updating to new software now...
Is just me or is this thread very quiet lately?
Are there so few iPhone users?

Posted by masseur
I think its quiet because there's not much to say.

I'm certainly not having any problems other than the occassional 3g hang where I see full reception but it seems the phone can't get data. after some seconds (up to a couple of minutes somtimes) 3g functionality returns again but it doesn't happen very often.

Apparantly its a known issue to do with the infineon chip and its going to be fixed in a firmware update sometime soon.

they're some great apps appearing on the appshop. apart from shazam and a couple of others I mentioned previously, I really like Koi pond and brain tuner and I've also put visualit's Tube London on there now too, oh, and converter which is one I had in the pre-appshop days which is now available in appshop

Posted by DragonEye
yeah that's the thing.. there isn't always that much to discuss... some bugs but overall people are just satifisied and using it i think...

app store + jailbreak + cydia is support heaven...

Apple Admits iPhone Kill Switch

If I had paid a small fortune to be the owner of an iPhone and discovered that Apple had installed code in the operating system to kill third party applications it disapproved of, I would be around to the Apple HQ to insert saidiPhone into whatever orifice of Steve Jobs' first appeared.

The Daily Telegraph carries the full story but essentially someone has discovered lines of code in the iPhone operating system that acts as a kill switch to neutralise programs Apple doesn't want you to have on your phone. Apple has, unsurprisingly came out with a lot of guff and hot air to defend this, but the Telegraph story may hold the true reason.

The Telegraph story states: "Mr Jobs also announced that in the month since the iPhone 3G was released and the Application Store launched, around 60 million applications had been downloaded for the iPhone and iPod touch. About $30 million (£15 million) in revenue has been generated by the store. Developers keep a 70 per cent slice of this revenue, while Apple take the remaining 30 per cent. Mr Jobs said Apple was on course to make about $360 million this year from the App Store."

if you've got a jailbroken iphone the kill switch can be disabled by a hack

Posted by Bonovox
Just noticed the advertisment in a mag today. Phonedoctors.com saying FREE THE G...iPHONE UNLOCKED.

Posted by bavlondon2
Can the 3G iphone be unlocked yet? Also how much is it expected to go for once it hits PAYG?

Posted by Bonovox
Depending which one you go for in giga byte terms probably over £400. Who knows.

Posted by bavlondon2
Can it be unlocked yet though?

Thanks

no need to jailbreak to get apps from the app store.

jailbreak allows you to install other apps using the installer app that comes with jailbreaking but to be honest, I don't miss that at all as most of what I had on 2g are free or minimal price on app store

Posted by bavlondon2
Excellent thanks massuer. Im the same, I don’t feel any need for installer/cydia stuff but if I can still use appstore apps then that’s more that sufficient.

Cheers

Well- my iPhone is going back tomorrow! Hopefully going to get one that works! Mine has crashed on me almost daily for the past few weeks. Doesn't matter what software version I use! It's bad enough that the sync/ backup takes sooooooo long, but when the restore takes almost a full day to do and it crashes so often- well....
Anybody else had similar probs?

Posted by bavlondon2
Anyone used turbosim with iphone3g yet?

Posted by masseur
I've been considering getting a universal-sim which apparantly is now slimmer and so less likely to get stuck in the phone

Posted by bavlondon2
So even with Turbo sim the 3G is not there for long and it may even stop working after a while?
