The iPhone 3G gets hacked (unlocked)
Brazilian company DesbloqueioBr claims to be the first to hack the iPhone to allow its use on mobile carriers other than those currently offering it. The hack, demonstrated in a YouTube video uploaded by the company, will allegedly allow iPhone 3G owners to use the phone on any carrier.

If true, excellent news
Even though, I'm strongly considering moving from T-Mobile to O2 as I can't justify spending an extortionate amount on a sim free iPhone and then pay more for my line rental!
Posted by masseur
yeah, I already came to that conclusion earlier today and gave my pac code to O2, so my main number will move from tmob to o2 on Friday.
I've still got one sim only/w'n'w with tmob which I'll leave there for my WM phone

Pardom my stupidity... So, you have one contract now with O2 (which you have ported your tmobile number to)? And you also have another tmobile number which you are gonna keep for your new WM phone?
Posted by masseur
yeah. currently they are both sim only 1 month rolling contracts with web'n'walk but my main number will move to the iphone.
the other thats remaining at tmob is only £15/month. can't live with just one sim when I have 2 phones on me usually (at least!).

PS Howz the car going Masseur?
Posted by masseur
very happy with it thanks.
anyway... I'm still keen to get the iPhone unlocked so I can use my Aussie sim card on trips back home, and also to get it jailbroken as there is still stuff I used to have on the old iphone that is not yet available in the apps store

I'll do the same when I get mine.

Feeling conned by the promised "push" technology of MobileMe, specifically when making changes on your Mac, only to find out that it will not push, but instead, sync at 15-minute (60 minutes in 10.4.11) intervals? I found the .plist file that controls the "Automatic" sync interval for MobileMe, and changed it from 15 minutes to 1 minute. The file is located in ~/Library » Preferences » ByHost » com.apple.DotMacSync.your_MAC_address.plist.
Open this file in Property List Editor, find the AutoSyncInterval key, and then set it to the number of minutes after which you want it to sync with the server. I have it set to 1 right now, and it syncs every minute which is good enough for me at the moment. Hopefully this will be of value to anyone who needs something more immediate than a 15-minute sync, and doesn't want to bother with Manual sync.
[robg adds: I was disappointed to read that the 15-minute sync from a Mac to MobileMe/iPhone is a feature, not a bug. This hint seems to work well to create much more of a true push from your local Mac to the cloud; I tested it with both 1-minute and 5-minute settings, and it seemed to work just fine, and my setting survived even after opening and working with the MobileMe System Preferences panel. Obviously, though, if you use the Synchronize pop-up to change the sync interval, your settings will be overridden.]

I've got to say I'm less than impressed by mobile me (on windows) and if it doesn't start working properly by the 59th day of the trial I'll be cancelling and forgetting about it until I see plenty of evidence that its all as advertised

Apple emailed an apology to all MobileMe users today:

hrmph... I ddn't get that email yet, but its a good sign that at least they're doing something about it

anyone know how to get mobile me setup on an iPhone with 1.1.4 software? as i can't get it to work.
Posted by masseur
v2 is the minimum unfortunately as the "push" options are not there in 1.1.4
Posted by whentheleveebreaks
Just got my iPhone 3G, happy with it so far, activation went without any problems at all. Just doing a sync so everything is as it was on my old iPhone.
Just got to see if i can put my old one back to 1.1.4 an ziphone it

From http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/42583223/safe-code
"So, currently (when released) PwnageTool 2.0 will support:-
iPhone (1st Gen) with 2.0 - Activated, Unlocked & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).
iPod Touch with 2.0 - Activated & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).
iPhone (3G) with 2.0 - Activated, Jailbroken (with support for third party applications).
We’ve made some progress on the baseband unlock of the 3G device, but at this point PwnageTool will not support 3G unlocking or BootNeuter on the 3G device. It is, of course supported on the first generation device with 2.0. We’ll push out an update with 3G support if and when it is completed.
As soon as we fix this up and test a bit more we’ll be ready for release, we’ll get back to you with a release schedule soon.
Please loosen that seatbelt slightly while our cabin crew serve you complimentary drinks."

Hello Guys..Have not posted here for a while but just a few lines to help people out regarding supply of the Iphone 3g
I got mine from Italy on Friday while there on business..Unlocked, Black, 16 Giga.
I just walked into a TIM center..They asked for my passport and my credit card..they used a fake Italian address to register the sim card which was part of the package and that was it..No further questions asked..
The phone is unlocked and opereating perfectly in Greece now with a vodafone sim card...
Total price Euro 569 as adverised all over Europe..
So please wait and do not fork out big money right now..It will soon be freely available across Europe unlocked..
The only catch is they dont sell you more than one..at the moment..
Regards.
PS : Please do not ask me to psot any pictures!!!!
Ive just managed to get hold of a italy unlocked 3g iphone....Still waiting on delivey.
So are they completly unlocked then?
Do i need an italian provider sim to activate the phone?
Thanks
Posted by masseur
I guess it owuld make sense that any sim would do to activate the phone in itunes, if indeed unlocked ones needs to be activated in the first place... keep us updated please
btw, dare we ask how much?
Posted by J273
£570
Maybe a little crazy but for a completely unlocked model i think its worth it
Hate contracts and ill chuck my three sim in it.

I had a play with the new iphone today after work in the city centre O2 store. Very nice and i love the interface and screen but find it hard to get to grips with using it. I think i prefer buttons on a phone but maybe with time i would get used to it. My last touch screen phone was a P900i. Anyway i loved the way You Tube worked so well but i did notice the 3G reception was poor and this was city centre. It was 1 bar most of time. Nice phone but im in two minds about it.

prices here for pre-paid (payg) 3g iphones are:
8gb - $729aud = about 355gbp (black only)
16gb - $849aud = about 413gbp (black or white)
and you can unlock them for $80aud = 39gbp
so total for an unlocked 3g iphone from down under:
8gb - $809aud = 394gbp
16gb - $929 = 452gbp

Guys, silly question time again. But are there any benefits in terms of price, tariff... or unlocked possiblity of buying an iphone 3g from Ireland?

another pic from the iPhone 3g at 2 megapixels
for comparison, here's the same pic taken by the HTC Diamond at 3.2 megapixels

Thats a shocking difference in colour replication between the camera, I'm really shocked that the HTC is that bad.

I gave CPW a call today with regards returning my iphone within the 14 days returns policy.
The woman i spoke to told me ....I cant return the phone as ive made a call with it
Is that correct?
As anyone else had this problem?
Can you return a phone if its been used within the 14 days?
Thanks

I agree, but actually its better than previous HTC phones like the TyTN II which are usually fairly grainy. I used default settings for both so perhaps tweak of white balance or something might have improved the HTC.
anyway, I'm quite happy with the iphone photos. perfectly suitable for quick snaps and emails

It is very dificult to have a fully objective view about the iphone..
Having played with it for a few days i find it very difficult to go back to a device like Nokia E71..despite the nokia being a fully speced phone..
The iphone has a certain air of magic about it..the interface, the huge screen, the form factor, the briliant browser..and now the app store..
When 'jailbreak' becomes available it will be a hugely entertaining device to play with..

In Sweden you can't even return it if you just have broken the plastic sealing. Apple has given us special rules about it. So might be the case at CPW too.

Don't tell them it's not what you after, tell them it's not fit for purpose and doesn't work with your car kit.....
you've since been to Voda/O2/Orange/T-mo etc and bought a new phone that does work so no longer need CPWs phone, so would like a refund, you are happy to pay the x number of days line rental but that's it....

Hi everyone !
I am trying to sort out the settings for an iPod Touch's Exchange server settings and wonder if they are the same as the iPhone's.
In the Touch
Email -
Username ( it shows greyed out, Domain/User )
Password –
Description – which defaults to the email address that was input
After touching ‘next’, a new box appears for the server address to be added.
My problem is that I am sure I input all correctly, but
I keep getting a password prompt saying wrong user name or password.
The folders on the exchange server are mirrored to the Touch so there is some kind of communication happening !
The reason I ask about the iPhone's setup is that I know a number of people who use the iPhone successfully on the same server.
So if I can check the iPhone's setup, I might be able to sort out what I am doing wrong!

Have had the iPhone 3G for a week now, though id write a little review on it.
I had the first generation iPhone so was used to the interface and how the phone works. The new one has the same high build quality, and i would say it feels nicer in the hand. The battery doesnt last quite as long but im yet to try turning off the 3G to see how long it last with out that. It last for about a day, thats with 2 hours of watching videos on the train to work, 30 texts, 30 mins of calls, and a good couple of hours surfing over 3G/EDGE or wifi. The usage monitor says i use it for roughly 5 hours per day. May not be good enough for some but definitely good enough for me.
3G surfing speeds are good, though as with every other network, i cant get 3G reception at work (in central london ffs). But on the train i do see having the advantage of 3G over edge.
GPS is excellent, normally finds my exact position within 15 seconds, and for what i use it for it was excellently. (i have a tom tom for car navigation already).
The Push email service is brilliant, i use mobileme and have had very limited problems. push contacts and calenders works perfectly and i'm finding it really useful.
The App store is brilliant, have downloaded a few games, an aim messenger, the romote to control itunes, a couple of social networking apps and an excellent google app. All were free bar the games, and the quality of them seem really high. Being able to download them from anywhere is a nice touch (fancied some sodoku on the train and had an app within a couple of mins.
Over all definitely a worthy upgrade (free upgrade for me). Really really happy with it.

I enjoyed playing with the white one.
I'm going to be waiting for Vodafone to give me a free one in Qatar though
Posted by masseur
what I don't get now that we have 3g is, why does the itunes app still only work with a wifi connection?
Posted by whentheleveebreaks
Maybe they will update it, but at a guess its because 3G reception isnt always guarenteed and a download might glitch if it stops half way through.
At a guess though they might change it with future updates
Posted by carkitter
@masseur
Have you done a download speed test yet to see if the HSDPA is 3.6Mbps or higher?
Posted by masseur
yes, I posted my findings in the UK Networks 3.5g speeds discussion.
the best I've seen for the few trials I did was 1360kbps
Posted by >500
im not sure you would actually reach 3.6mbps?
i mean yes it is capable, but here in aus, on 3 network for example, network is currently at 3.6mpbs. though, with mobile broadband and phones the speeds are between 600kb - 1.5mbps. not exactly sure why the max cant be reached.
maybe some one can explain why its like that.
Posted by QVGA
3.6mbps is theoretical. 3.6 would be achieved in an ideal environment, meaning an environment free of any sort of physical limitations which could distort the signal.
Just like on a wired connection of 1mbps, its not possible to get exactly 1mbps because of the resistance offered by the copper wire.
However, i wonder what sort of limitation would cut the speed in half.
Posted by >500
yeah i had an idea why..... dont know why i asked
ah well, good for those who dont. thanks qvga
i just meant i doubt you would get those max speeds.
