You've got 14 days to return it just like any other phone. They'd take a percentage of the line rental off you for the time you've had it but that's fair enough.

I picked up a 16gb white one this morning from the local apple store. Loving it so far!

Ahh ok thanks.

Never had a contract phone for years so unsure on what the policy is.

I bought it online can i take it in and return it?

Thanks

Posted by SE-Naz
With CPW you shouldn't have too much of an issue...

I have purchased ONLINE and done exchanges in the shop... You may get a sales advisor... who intends to be a pain... but at my local I would have no problems in doing this...

Cheers
ENJOY

Not sure on whether to keep the o2 one....or send it back and get a sim free fully unlocked model.

I think the o2 deals good with the unlimited data ..its just the 18 month contract.

Are you keeping yours masseur?

not sure yet but its looking likely. if so then I'll make do until either installer is available on app shop (probably unlikely) or the easy jailbreak (and unlock) comes along in which case I guess we'll have the best of both worlds

Posted by J273
The only problem with unlocking them yourself is when a new firmware update comes out....you need to wait for a new unlock option for the new firmware.

but with a factory unlocked ....you can update without any problems as soon as its avalable.

Thats the only reason why id prefer a factory unlocked handset really....plus no 18month contract.

Masseur, have you had a chance to play with your 2 new phones yet? If so, verdict please

PS You never did say what "fun car" you got!

Maybe so, but lets put the maths together... Factory unlocked iPhone = £600 (odd) and NO minutes, texts etc On top of the 600 figure you have to add your additional line rental. That then would render the cost of the package extortionately over priced!!!

O2 contract and 16gb = £700 (odd) BUT with minutes, txts etc

Im on the fence about this, Blackberry Bold or iPhone 3G. Pro's and cons really are that the BB has a very good tarriff for when I will be travelling (£20 a month extra for unlimited browsing and email international).

Been an avid Mac user, I love the simplicity of the iPhone and only got rid of the original because of the lack of 3G, but the free applications, and the fact everyone is developing for the iphone is a real plus point. I hate that you have to pay for themes and 98% of apps on the Blackberry, and so yes here I stand confused.com

We will see how impulse gets the best of me in the coming weeks.

Is it out on Pay and go yet as i heard it will be.

Doubt it...

02 will be trying to milk alot of idiots
and have them stuck on contract to get it

Masseur I thought you seemed abit impatient if you ask me remember it's only a phone and theres better things out there to get excited about

Posted by J273
it's due on payg around Christmas time.

Do you think o2 will ever provide an unlock code one you come to the end of your contract ?

As anyone heard if this will be possible with the 1st gen?

Posted by Miss UK
lol and I bet it's gonna cost £399.99 on PAYG then..

regarding unlocking I think you would have to phone 02 themselves and ask them about it or wait for a 02 advisor to findout on here

Posted by Bonovox
Im getting one when it comes out on pay and go as im already with O2 hopefully i will get some off with trade in and upgrade reward by the time it comes out. Thats if they let you do trade in with iphone.

Posted by Miss UK
have you got the older iPhone already?

I think they may let you trade in on that if you have it,
but something cheap I doubt there gonna knock much off

maybe a N95-2 who knows

@scouser_75, an MR2 mk1

some pics taken with 3g iphone in Bruges this w/e

Posted by bavlondon2
Thanks for the pics they look pretty decent for a basic 2mp snapper.

Posted by sepehr_sz
amazing pictures

Posted by masseur
I wouldn't say amazing, but not too bad, and perfectly acceptable to attach to an email

Posted by scouser_75
@ Masseuer - An MR2 Mark 1! My uncle has one of those (T-Bar). Loves it to bits. Only has 30k on the clock. Totally mint condition. Never leaves the garage if its raining. If it looks as though it'll rain. etc etc etc Uncle lives in Kenya but travels back to the UK JUST to service and make sure car is OK.

And the pics dont look too bad. I've go a VIII which has a 3mp camera and the pics dont look as good as the iPhones 2mp camera!!!

PS Have you seen the film In Bruge? the church in the pics looks to be the same one as that in the film?

Posted by masseur
lol, that seems to be common with these. This one is 59k miles (documented by service stamps and every MOT certificate) and has been (and probably will be) treated much the same!

not seen the movie but I've seen the trailer.

anyway... I'm quite happy with the iphone 3g. the gps seems very good, as good as it was on my TyTN, if not better, and the 3g data speeds are acceptable and there's so many free apps that are useful!

my latest free download is shazam which is similar to trackID and works very well. it also keeps a list of the song you have "tagged" and even provides a link to youtube to play the sony/video if its available

So, you'll be sticking with O2 then Masseur?

As for In Bruge - you have to watch it. GREAT film. And I hardly ever say that about a film

got my tmobile pac code (I like the way the just read it to you over the phone unlike some others!)...

but I'm in no hurry. I'm still only 3 days into the 14 days I have to decide and who knows what might happen in that time regarding availability of unlocked units at sensible prices etc...

x1387 has unlocked ones:

little pricey.... but hey, what do you expect

Posted by masseur
a little pricey? lol, so what would be a lot pricey!?

worth watching though as their prices tend to come down every couple of days or so when he first gets them as they seem to judge from the demand price price they can get

hii all
i'm very curious in developing a small application to the iphone.
however the darn SDK i found is only usable on a mac.
does one know how i could develop on a win32 system

Posted by Boinng
I'm seriously conflicted about the Iphone.

Can I give up copy and paste? Document editing? TomTom??

I love the design, the screen, the ipod-ness, and the way things work - there's no question it looks and feels a hell of a lot better than Windows Mobile - but there's just so much missing.

Where's the task app? What's the point of in-built GPS if there's no TomTom-like app available? Why do I still want one?

1) Tomtom apparently is on its way!
2) You want one because Apple are The Master at Advertising and Promoting

Posted by masseur
@Boinng,
I guess you don't need a task list when there's no background tasking

I'm sure TomTom will fugure a way of marketing their product, even if it gets Apple branding! one way or another I'm sure there will be GPS voice routing software, as we've seen, there are lots of people out there prepared to do it themselves by any means!

Strangely, I note in the app store that there is an app called g-park which, it says, lets you
1. park your car and hit the Park Me! button
2. get lost
3. Hit the "Where did I park?" button which brings up google maps and creates turn-by-turn directions that will take you right back to your car.

in fact, google maps does a pretty decent job with the built in GPS but of course its not the same as tomtom or garmin as all you get is a purple line on the map showing you where you need to go and a blue flashing dot to see where you are now, and its your job to make the little blue dot follow the long purple line!

I have to say I got the same feeling you have when I wanted the 8800 when it came out, but that feeling didn't last long once I got it.
Its different with the iPhone... although many here compare tech specs to the nth degree, in my average daily routing the iPhone is a pleasant way to get stuff done, but yes, cut and paste is definitely still missed

All i can say is try it and if you don't like it just send it back

Posted by Boinng
@scouser - yes, it's the marketing! Damn them!

@masseur - actually I mean Tasks as in a to-do list - I use tasks in Outlook all the time, and it's really going to irritate me not having access to those in the phone. I don't suppose there's anything to fill that gap in the app store? Not just a to-do list, but something that will sync with my list in Outlook/Exchange?

G park actually sounds pretty good - is that a paid for app or freeware? Is there much useful freeware?

If there was some official announcement on TomTom I'd be happier.. the exclusion in the SDK, coupled with Apple's deafening silence on the matter, is very disconcerting.

Posted by masseur
ah sorry, well there is a free todo app in which you can add, order and manage your todo items. it also has basic priority and you can add notes to the task. There's also a more comprehensive paid app for £5.99 that lets you sync with "popular online tools" like Toodledo or Remember The Milk (whatever that is!). take a look here for more on that...

yep, g-park is also free and in fact there's already 100+ free (and useful/fun) apps + loads more in the sub £6 level that are worthy of consideration

as mentioned before, Apple specifically prohibit the use of the SDK to develop GPS applications for voice navigation etc so as I say, TomTom needs to create an app without the SDK, or come to some arrangement with Apple but I'm sure one way or another it will happen. With such a large userbase out there how could it not?

Posted by scouser_75
If you have a "to-do" list in your Calendar on Mac, when you synch the phone do the "to-do" items not sync also?

turn by turn coming to iPhone 3g (eventually, I guess!)

Posted by Boinng
It's all still very vague though, isn't it... I'm coming around to the idea that the Iphone just isn't there yet, unfortunately. The lack of proper to-do lists is a big problem for me on a practical level anyway; I've looked into the third party task alternatives and exchange support is only possible via a few longwinded kludges at best; it's really something that needs to be built in along with the rest of the exchange support, and doubtless it will be on the Iphone 2.5 or whatever, but that's no reason to rush and buy the 2.0 this year.

The astonishing truth is that Windows Mobile is still the better OS - sure it's uglier, but in terms of the actual functionality it includes, and has available third party, it's many miles ahead still. Given it's totally open nature, and the fact that WM7 is bound to prettify things a great deal, it may well stay there too.

I just read Phone Arena review of this phone. They said they had bad reception problems and voice quality was poor on the other end. My god why cant Apple get something so simple about a phone right.

Posted by jalf
well, mine has good reception and it's loud and clear....

Posted by masseur
same here. I'm running old and new iphones side by side this week and if anything I'd say the 3g is better reception and crystal clear sound

no complaints here, but then I had no complaints with the old one either

Posted by Dogmann
Hi all,

Well maybe it's an US thing then as many in the states are complaining of only getting 1-2 bars where other 3G phones are getting much stronger signals. But that is good news for UK users then.

How are UK users finding battery life?

Yeah the US probably is harder to cover with network coverage plus i did once read that with US networks sound quality when making a call is alot quieter. Anyone know of this.

Posted by Superluminova
@ Mass:

Is the iPhone 3G's speaker noticeably louder? for speaker phone and for music etc as the iPhone is pathetic at loudspeaker functions.

Posted by masseur
I've just played the same couple of music videos and audio tracks on both old and new 16gb iphones and the consensus in my house is that the new iphone is marginally louder but it sounds quite alot better and clearer making the overall experience quite a bit better

but I never really play music or video through the loudspeaker so I'm not worried about that.

I'll give speakerphone a bit of a go when I've had my nosh!

Posted by Leks
I also only get 1-2 bars 3G Coverage on my iPhone where I normally get maximum with other phones. And 3G is very common in Sweden.

Posted by Laetitya
Any ideas when an unlock solution for the 3G will be out?

Posted by masseur
not too long I expect
