Apple unveils the 3G iPhone

True Boiing. I think I'm just getting itchy fingers as I've waited ages for a semi-decent offering from Apple!

I think I'll go with the patience thing

Posted by Boinng
I have to wait till at least October, so I'm telling myself it's for the best... it'll be hacked wide open by that point, and the appstore etc will be in full swing hopefully...

Besides, I'd never buy one while O2 are in full-on hype mode, telling everyone how sold-out it is. If they're sold out that's fine, I'll keep my money, their loss! Whatever phone I end up buying this year, I'd rather feel like the network/manufacturer actually appreciated my custom..

Posted by masseur
I think it was having kids that gave me my patience... or perhaps just getting older

either way I'm not impatient any more... well... except that I've already got my wife ready to jump on the train to my office in London with my new iphone when it get delivered at home, under the guise of "having lunch together"

Posted by Boinng
Masseur, I'm interested in your take on this - knowing that you've been both a kaiser and an Iphone owner already, how do you think the new Iphone might suit someone coming from the kaiser, using it as their one and only phone/PDA? I've enjoyed the kaiser but found some of the bugs/lack of refinement frustrating, and having essentials like exchange sync now built into the Iphone has turned my head. Is there anything obvious I'm going to miss, do you think?

There's the lack of keyboard, document editors, less freeware etc... anything else? Anything I'm likely to really hate/love?

I thought I would miss the keyboard on the TyTN II but the iPhone on screen keypad really is quick to use once you get used to it, which takes a day or two to realise just how clever it is. I can text/email just as fast on iPhone as I could on previous WM models.

I'll wait till I test the new iPhone in regards to document handling but I probably won't be happy until I've jailbroken the new one to install the many apps/games etc that I use today. I don't want to rely wholly on the AppleShop. The number of apps available is still less than on WM, but you can usually find apps for most things.

you'll love the size when compared to the TyTN II, thats for sure. my iPhone sits in my top shirt pocket which is something I never could do with the TyTN II.

bluetooth profiles is probably the other big thing to miss. but if you just use a BT headset for calls then you'll be right.

I've never really had a problem with the battery life but not being able to change the battery may be an issue for you. I just have a proporta gadget with a 3400mAh battery that charges anything via USB to sort out such problems, but I've rarely used it with the iphone

I'll keep this in mind and report back on Friday when I've (hopefully) seen the new unit

Posted by Boinng
Thanks - to be honest I'm not worried about the bluetooth support since that's never been something I used particularly, as long as I can use a headset for calls if/when needed that's fine.

The keyboard I've been in two minds over, but when all's said and done the kaiser's keyboard is far from perfect anyway (I hate having to press Fn just for a comma!) so I'm willing to try something new.

The size/simple design always appealed to me since the original, it was really just the total lack of apps, fast data, and GPS that put me right off first time around - all the things that the 3G fixed!

Are there any good sites out there for the existing (non-appstore) apps?

[ This Message was edited by: Boinng on 2008-07-09 15:36 ]

Posted by masseur
on the iphone I rarely look at sites directly.
you use the installer app that gets installed when you jailbreak and it has "sources" in it. each day that you run installer, it auto updates the list of apps available at those sources. you can also add your own sources too if you find an iphone app that you want as you google around.

All apps are installed via the installer by downloading direct to the phone and it works very well

Well, I too will hopefully be moving over from a Vario III to iPhone

But will heed your advice and be patient

Masseur, where abouts in London do you work? Would be cool to hook up and get some tips and help on iPhone hacking and stuff.

This is the queue at Vodafone's Auckland store 5 hours out from iPhone launch:
34 people and growing ...

More photos to come later...
Less than 4 1/2 hrs to go.

Edit:
And here the local Media show up...
(Sorry to the Presenter in the first shot, it's not a great photo )

And Vodafone take the wraps of a top-secret version for those of us with large fingers...

Nice shots carkitter! It looks rather unexciting as an event though. Maybe it will go off at midnight.

Or put them in glass cases. At our NZ prices you wouldn't want to risk actually using it!

Wow, check this out!

From the NZ Vodafone website:

Apparently the iPhone has a Phone!

A ridiculous amount. New Zealand is the most expensive place in the world to buy an iPhone. Its also the first place in the world to sell them, but who cares when they're at these unreasonable prices:

8GB - NZ$979 - US$743 - £375
16GB - NZ$1129 - US$857 - £433

Posted by scouser_75
Yes, but are the NZ iPhones not contract free???

If so, what are the chances of ordering them to be sent over to the UK???

Those are contract free prices, but you can only use them on contract. So you need to already be on a contract to be able to use one.

The contract prices are still stupid. The most expensive contract gives you only 1GB a month of data, and over the 2 year term it ends up costing you about NZ$6500 (US$4934/GBP£2494). And that's assuming you never go over your contract allowance.

Posted by Superluminova
any new Zealanders care to inform the world if it unlocked or not?

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
I don't think any of us are silly enough to get one at these prices. I'm sure they are locked though.

IF unlocked, I'm sure some us may suffer a moment of madness

After the initial release, I tried in vain to upload some video. I then went back to the store and the Vodafone staff very kindly let me jump the queue to try the phone and take some photos. Standby while I upload them. It'll be at least 1/2 an hour. I'll also have another go at uploading the video. I've gotta head to work in less than 3 hrs though and I've been up all night...

As I write this the Vodafone Auckland store will have sold out (they were comparing the number of customers waiting to thier stock as I left) which means the Wellington and Christchurch stores are probably the same. More are available at other stores and at VodafoneNZ's Online store.

Edit: iPhone Unboxing photos

Check it out!
Yes it's the iPhone 3G, no I haven't bought it... yet.
No I don't know the download speed. I asked but the staff couldn't tell me, and didn't have one set up to test in this way. I did get to try a working demo model and take some pics so - enjoy!

It did synch with my HBH-PV605 BT headset ok and and also with my V640i via BT but did not list the phone name. Only 'Mobile Phone' came up; Object Push was listed under services in my phone.
No camera settings are available at all.

Goodnight

@carkitter, excellent pics! well worth staying up for

regarding o2 sales... O2: iPhone 3G orders reached 13,000 per second... holy cow! I wonder how many they sold in total?

Posted by Superluminova
Purely from someone in phone retails point of view just think of the commission! £££££....lol

Thats a crazy figure, i expect a very quite day in work tomorrow lol

Posted by MnM
13,000 per sec = 60M per hour

No chance of that no of sales - maybe failed attempts to log in?

Posted by masseur
as it says in the posts on that page, its not a sustained speed, its a peak

Posted by MnM
Point accepted - but it does seem a phenomenal number (per sec)

Finally got my video sorted:

Posted by masseur
still waiting for DHL to deliver my 3g... its "on the van for delivery"!

Posted by whentheleveebreaks
Im going to have a look again on the Strand store on my lunch break, if its still too busy or sold out, i'll wait a bit, i dont mind tooo much, though i would have liked to have got it today

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
I went and had a look at one today. I didn't find it very special at all in comparison to the original. The most interesting part was the fake contacts people had written into the phonebook.

Posted by masseur
ok mine just arrived and my wife is on her way to me with it...

yeah, I guess most of the changes are inside
I also have an HTC diamond on its way to me too and I'm picking up a fun car tonight so lots of new toys to play with

Posted by Memzee
I have some questions with this new iPhone..

What happens to Installer now? Will developers bother putting anything on there now?

What if.. *ahem* I don't want to pay for some apps.. ?

If you buy it online eg through CPW, do they still force you to sign up for a contract? Or could I say, order one on the £75 contract, get the iPhone for free and then unlock it?

Ta.

WOw... please give us a detailed look.. I am in line to write an article on the iphone for a web site.. as much info you can provide! Can't wait! Just a note on what do you think..etc..

Posted by masseur
I'm thinking that some developers will use the SDK and take the official route via iTunes, but there will be some developers who will stay well clear.

I guess if you don't want to *ahem* pay for apps you can't have 'em!

you can't get the 3g iphone without committing to a contract, at least not until the payg comes along nearer to Christmas

oh well, try again later

thats bad

Hi all,

Just be thankful none of you waited for hours outside an Apple Store as in a balls up of massive proportions guess what?

You can't activate a iPhone in a Apple Store as the 02 activation site requires Internet Explorer so of course none of the Mac's in a Apple Store worked.

Here is a Video from Crave and the guy that really got screwed is the one who bought the first place off E-Bay.

Here is the link

http://videos.cnet.co.uk/39039446.htm

To be honest i really don't get which bright spark thought launching firmware 2.0 and the new iPhone at the same time was a good idea. It was obvious demand was going to be high. People are complaining all over the Net that their original iPhone no longer works and neither does their new one either. There really are a lot of very angry and disappointed Apple iPhone fans out there.

Marc

Haha,

Seems that the Apple iPhone is full of worms!!!!

'It's a mess," said freelance photographer Giovanni Cipriano, who updated his first-generation iPhone only to find it unusable.'
