@jk
yes hsdpa runs on 2100 band too.

Just Telstra's runs on the 850 band.

its the only network that uses it in Aus. thats why its handset range is quite different to other networks here.

also, as masseur said, hsdpa speeds are said to be capable of 40(or there abouts)mbps

Posted by Superluminova
quick question, does anyone think that you'll be able to buy the iPhone 3G in Dubai in this month??

Posted by Bonovox
I just recieved email this morning from O2 about what to do next for pre ordering the iphone. They said one per customer which is fair.

...Most Networks have at least 3.6mbps HSDPA and will support 7.2mbps HSDPA shortly so whilst a lot of current devices support 3.6mbps. A lot of the new devices coming will be supporting 7.2mbps which is the future of mobile data and just so much faster than 384kbps 3G.

Marc

I'm well aware of that. In my experience one gets approx 1/3 of the quoted maximum speed so the iPhone and other 3.6Mbps HSDPA devices won't be restricted by hardware until the networks offer 14.4Mbps.

Posted by Dogmann
@carkitter

Well my experience is more like 2/3rds of the possible speed but then this is improving all the time. As 7.2mbps is implemented it should mean greater or maximum speeds for 3.6mbps devices which is all good and just so much faster than 3G which leads to a better user experience.

Marc

I am well excited about this phone but im not too happy with the prices they have set for the iPhone and the contract. Im only 17 unemployed and full time education, i have 3 grand but i just do not want to waste 650 pound of my money on this device. I had the first iPhone and im happy about the new one but not rele happy with the price.

The biggest problem with 3G is the cost to implement it.
Also the networks stand to lose alot on their investment on an ever changing and upgrading system.

Eg: In South Africa, between 2 of the biggest networks they have +/- 11000 base stations and 95% coverage on the GSM network while the UMTS network has 7000 base stations and only 2.5% coverage.
So if you work out how many base stations would be needed for 95% UMTS coverage its just way to expensive.

Maybe smaller countries will launch 14MB I doubt others will.

Back on topic, are these 3G iphones Voda branded?

Posted by scouser_75
Guys/Mods, are we allowed to talk about "unlocking" matters on this site?

Posted by bavlondon2
I will be getting mine 1st week of September!!!!!

Posted by scouser_75
Well, as no one has said "NO"...

So, the general consensus is that unlike with the previous iPhone we won't be able to buy the phone contract free in order to "activate it at home"

The calculated rumours though are that the PAYG iPhones will come in at between 300 - 350 for the 8gb model. And 400 - 450 for the 16gb model.

This will then leave the possibility for deflowering the iPhone

BUT BUT BUT, and this is the main point of me starting this subject on this thread, what are the chances of losing a lot of the iPhones functions by unlocking it? Will we lose things such as Visual Voicemail? App store? Software upgrade? etc etc etc And, with the new "push" stuff going on also, what are the chances of Apple somehow "bricking" unlocked phones via the "push" system?

Questions, worries, uncertainties.......... But lets hope we can crush these 3

Vodafone New Zealand will be the first to release the 3G iPhone. The phone will be available at 1 store in each of the following cities - Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch - at 00:01 Friday 11th July and at most other stores from 9am the same day. The phone will also be available for purchase from the Online store from 00:01 on Friday. The NZ iPhone is NOT available on Prepay and details of the plans which accompany the NZ$199+ price will be available 10am tomorrow NZ time (10pm Monday UK time).

More details: http://view.eid.co.nz/?ice=175FZ3PFHG9

Whether I purchase on Friday or not, I'll go along to the Auckland store at midnight and take some pics for y'all.

So you paid for the last iphone but you think the new one is too expensive even though its hugely cheaper than the first one?????

Might I suggest a part time job?

Just received a text from O2 that all upgrade customers can pre-register at www.o2.co.uk/upgradeonline be patient as it seems their servers are rather busy

Gay, the store has gone down half way through upgrading my iphone.

Due to the time difference, 00:00 Friday 11th in NZ = noon Thursday UK time and approx 5am Thursday US Pacific Daylight Time.

I just spent 30 minutes talking to various departments at o2 and none can confirm what HDSPA speed the iphone 3g will support. I explained that 3g is the whole point of the new model and sureley they have tested it on their network and must know its capabilities... but no, no one had a clue.

I did have their network performance explained to me and that is that 80% of the population has 3g coverage and 100% of that is HSDPA at 1.6mbits and they're half way through rolling out 3.6mbits

I then spoke to apple and it took 25 minutes of them not knowing and not having the info available, and only when the support lady asked "some more technical colleagues" did they suggest the HSDPA speed is 7.2mbps, but none would commit to it!

I've got mine ordered so one of the first things I'll be doing on Friday evening is a few speed tests!

Posted by whentheleveebreaks
Bah, my order didnt go through and the store died, have to wait and do it later.

Posted by masseur
wonder what they are fixing?

I did mine around 8.30 but have not received any confirmation emails. I do have the order ref though.

Posted by whentheleveebreaks
did you do it though the existing customer bit?

Posted by masseur
no, as a new customer.

I'll have 14 days to decide if I want to keep it, in which case I'll port my number back to o2 again, otherwise I'll return it and wait for a sim free or payg option which can be unlocked and then use it on t-mob

Masseur, so right now you're with t-mobile, right?

And you are gonna go over to O2 and port your number to O2? In which case you'll have 2 weeks to decide if you like the iPhone. If not, you can hand the phone back, cancel the O2 contract and port number back to T-Mobile?

If this is the case, I might consider doing the same thing. Hopefully by then PAYG iPhone will be available

Posted by masseur
no, I won't port my number to o2 until I've spent a few days with the new iphone on the O2 service with whatever number they give me initially

If it doesn't perform due to the crummy o2 3g service then I'll hand it back and stick with the t-mob option. I'm sure an unlocking solution will come along very soon once people get their hands on a real device and not just an original iphone upgraded to V2 beta

Cool.

How many days do "port-overs" normally take?

Posted by fatreg
bang on 7 days scouser....

Posted by masseur
no, since 1st April its 2 days now.

I did t-mob to o2 in may and back again in June and it was 2 days both ways

by September 2009 it will be 2 hours! (see here)

Posted by scouser_75
Wow! 2 days. Cool And is there a charge to port? or is it free?

PS It seems all iPhones for pre-booking are now sold

What are the chances of there being no iPhones come close of play Friday? Or even at beginning of Friday?

Posted by masseur
its free to port

Posted by scouser_75
Thanks again Masseur.

So BIG question now is... do I succumb to the rip-off O2 tariff of 35 P/M and sacrifice my T-Mobile Flext 35 at £25 P/M (I got a discount from T-Mobile) OR do I wait... and wait.... and wait some more for the PAYG iPhone?

PS Does anyone know if iPhone is available on an Apple Education Discount?

No, the iPhone is excluded from an education discount.

Posted by scouser_75
Bother re no education discount!

Posted by Superluminova
There will be loads in store on friday, can't see them not being able to meet the demands

I'm gonna hold off till the unlocking is worked out or until i can get a simfree one in dubai

Posted by masseur
and so it starts... iPhone jonny: world's first iPhone 3G owner (in waiting)!

Posted by scouser_75
Hmmmmm! Had a thought...

Does anyone in here know what the iPhone policy and charges are in India?

Reason I ask is if it's available sim/contract free then I could order one from there as I know someone who is going out very soon

Posted by masseur
not sure, but you've just given me a thought.

I'm going to Bruges this w/e and belgium are not allowed to sell sim locked phones, so I'll take a look into availability there too!

in the meantime, my O2 one is confirmed so hopefully that will arrive on Friday.

edit: yeah, but then another thought. I guess the policy for the 3g iphone is the same worldwide and it will need to be activated in store and as a non resident that won't work

I'm looking into it right now Masseur.

If you get lucky in Bruge, any chance you can pick me up a white one

Hahaha, love some of the comments on that story. That guy looks like a typical New Zealand uni student. Doing it to get famous.

There is a video here of a guy that seems to be having a go at the guy waiting in line for the iPhone:

http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=OZF5jedK1k8

CAUTION: It contains HEAPS of swearing and very offensive language. However it is amusing to see what a person is like when on the drug P. Mods, feel free to delete my link if you deem it too offensive.

Also, there was a story on the news last night of a guy who was planning to line up for the iPhone 18 hours ahead of release, and then he was auctioning his position in line on our local equivalent of eBay. I think the price was approaching $100 at the time.

Really ridiculous to even line up for an iPhone in my opinion. There will be plenty for everyone. And at the stupidly high (highest in the world) prices of the iPhone in New Zealand, there will probably be more than enough for everyone.

Well, having just done some research, I think I may have got lucky with the iPhone from India idea.

Apparently, theirs may be open to all GSM sims!

Will keep you all informed.......

First iPhone 3G caught in the wild, unboxed and handled

If you're a prospective iPhone 3G buyer, get ready to make a mess of your keyboard, desk, and any nearby objects that may be hit by spittle flying out of your mouth. Some lucky, lucky Portuguese man or woman has already had the pleasure of cracking open the box and booting up their new device. Feast your eyes on the above pic and one more after the break, and keep reminding yourself that you've only got three more days to wait

ENGADGET

EDIT:

Another one on display at a Swiss store..

Anyone heard anything about voice guiding gps-software? It seems of the facts that only google maps is supplied.

Congrats to that "L - person" So there are already new iPhones between us.. It`s just some owners are very discreet about it and others aren`t..

Posted by masseur
@Leks, which does begin with 'L'
some who work in phone shops or for apple I suppose are lucky to be able to check them out in advance!

as for voice guidance etc, well tomtom is said to have a version for iphone but thats about all we know at present.

Apples SDK rules do not allow development of such software so quite how tomtom will market it is another question

Posted by Boinng
I was (am) seriously considering a move to the Iphone from my Tytn II later this year, but that will be heavily dependent on a good choice of useful software, like TomTom, being readily available from the Appstore. If Apple are using that SDK to lock certain companies out and create monopolies for their chosen partners (like Google) they can forget it, I'll stick to good old WM where the market is open to all kinds.

Posted by scouser_75
Guys, have a look at this link and let me know what you think please.

It seems to be genuine enough. the only thing i dont understand is how they can promise that the phone WILL be unlocked?!?!?!? No one has it in their hand to be able to promise this!!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/iPhone-[....]664593&_trksid=p3286.m14.l1318

Posted by Boinng
Well realistically they can't promise it, they're just trying their luck. The seller has a positive feedback of 1, what have they got to lose!

It may be well intentioned, but I wouldn't trust my money to it. Patience is a virtue - there's no way I'd buy anything now from O2 or anyone else until the phones are in peoples hands and we all know exactly what the score is with unlocking/activation etc.
