either way works. basically those characters are removed and anything after them is sent as the message.
this should work on any network. I'm currently using it on t-mobile on my iphone and have used it on Telstra (Australia) on my iphone and other phones too
just try it. send yourself a message

Vodafone NZ will be releasing the iPhone on July 11.
Australia is also getting it on July 11, probably through Vodafone.

Tried it on my V640i and it doesn't work. The *0# appears in the message to.

Well if Vodafone NZ are getting it then surely Vodafone UK should but who knows. By the way my sister in law is from Wellington New Zealand.
Posted by carkitter
Actually Vodafone UK are not getting it - yet. From the Vodafone Press release:
"Vodafone today announced it has signed an agreement with Apple to sell the iPhone in ten of its markets around the globe. Later this year, Vodafone customers in Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey will be able to purchase the iPhone for use on the Vodafone network."
You sister-in-law is not missing anything here; NZ is in the doldrums ATM. Hopefully November brings a change of Govt, we need one that has a clue...

Does anyone know if it would be possible to have a "Today" screen on the new iPhone? Such as that on TytnII, N95 or other business mobiles?
I have seen an app which acts this way but cant remember what it was called. No doubt something like that will be available when the app store opens.
There are two that I know of: Intelliscreen & iToday. Intelliscreen seems to be more popular.
Thanks guys for your replies.
So, the screens from these apps will run over the usual iPhone screen (the screen where you have all the apps on)?
Posted by shanespencer
No, they are displayed on the 'locked' screen.

At least one of them works that way - I only say that as ive seen some screen shots of one of those 2 apps in action.

Hi all
Well OK it's confirmed that it has HSDPA but something doesn't make sense as the claim of 2.8 faster then EDGE is a severely cut down HSDPA speeds.
Please some one correct me if I'm wrong but isn't EDGE slower than 3G and 3G is 384kbps and i believe EDGE is 280kbps odd well 2.8x faster then 280kbps is well bellow even 1mbps. Even basic HSDPA is up to 3.6mbps and a lot devices are now coming equipped to support up to 7.2mbps as the networks are rolling out support for this.
So what is happening with the 3G iPhones HSDPA support then? as i for one am confused.
Marc
I'm confused too, and this imgae confuses me even more ...
According to GSMA it supports 3.6Mbps.

Anyone knows if there are major changes in the iPod that comes with the iPhone? Looks to me like the biggest upgrade here is the inclusion of 3G.

I been told by an O2 store assistant that the old iphone is going to be also put on pay and go but what i find odd about that is there all sold out so i hear. Does anyone know.

Hi all,
Can someone verify something for me, I haven't been able to find the answer to this probably easy question. Now that Apple have announced that the 8GB 3G iPhone will retail for no more than $199, i.e. somewhere in the region of £100, can I just order directly from the Apple store and simply slide in my 02 sim and continue with my existing 02 contract at £20 per month or whatever it is, rather than switching to a £30 contract and be tied it for the next 18 months?

no you won't be able to do that, now that o2 are subsadising the iPhone, they'll be doing activations instore and the same at the apple stores.
Posted by Superluminova
Also the 3G iPhone is meant to have its sim card pre-installed as part of the manufacturing process, so it looks very bleak for sim swapping on o2 or other networks.

i was reading through the posts and someone said they cant put mp3 ringtone on the iphone well i did.
Heres a link on how to do so:

a la CDMA? or do you mean hard locking the phone to one sim card? if so, that's illegal in the UK, it's not even monopoly, it's worse than that!........ unless you request it!

Yeah, that makes sense. Either way I think I've made my decision. I've seen a few so-so reviews of the G900 which 'was' going to be my next phone, so the iPhone it is. I've registered my details with 02. I've been a customer of theirs for a considerable number of years, and whilst I haven't been paying high monthly fees, they've still made a fair bit of money out of me. It would nice to see some sort of deal/offer for existing customers, but I guess these phones will be flying out of stores at an unprecedented rate so it's not like they need to offer existing customers special deals. Can I cope with the crappy camera? We'll see

The info is finally out on the PAYG prices for the new 3G iphone... and it's not as bad as I was expecting to be fair! Can see plenty of these being sold once a proven unlocking method comes out...!

considering I paid £350 for my 16gb before I sussed out and had confidence with unlocking, I'd probably go for this payg to start with while waiting for ziphone (or someone else) to get the unlocking sorted
also, having officially activated, we'll be able to get real warranty (not that I needed it so far)
not bad at all really considering what was previously thought they would charge (£400+)
Posted by Bonovox
Well i registered my details with them for this as i been with O2 pay and go for one year now. The deals look great i cant wait free Wi Fi and internet and only £10 quid after that. Im loving that. Only thing i think is odd is on a phone so high end as this why no mms. Very bizarre.

Hi all,
Was just reading August's T3 which has a 3G iPhone review and it says,
"With speeds of up to 1.8mbps" "However actual speeds will will vary a lot depending on where you are"
Not sure but is this a iPhone limitation or down to 02?
Marc

I would take anything T3 say with a large pinch of salt as I'm sure they don't actually "review" products in the way we understand reviewing. They tend to just rattle off stuff from the official web site and/or press releases etc and inject a bit of humour and show lots of glossy pics
I'd suggest waiting for a real review
Posted by Dogmann
Hi Masseur,
I know that but as they are an extremely pro iPhone magazine i seriously doubt that have an ulterior motive. Personally i feel it is more likely to be a 02 restriction then anything else. But a lot of the speed comparisons of the iPhone are confusing to say the least.
I suppose really still the $64,000 question is can it be unlocked or not as until it can be used on another Network it will hard to know for sure.

I don't think they have any motive at all, they're just rattling off some number they read somewhere.
I've been reading T3 since they started even though its one of the worst tech mags around (stuff is only marginally better) but they do have good pics to drool over

I used the 3G Iphone last week, Google maps loaded as fast as HSDPA 3.6!
I was shocked at the download speed and just overall speed of the phone!!
I think it has HSDPA or some sort of compressing data browser.
Posted by Dogmann
@JK
We know it has HSDPA the big question is how fast can it support? as currently there doesn't appear to be a clear answer to that question.
Personally i think the 1.8mbps may be an 02 restriction and not down to the iPhone. Most devices now support 3.6mbps and many are coming out supporting 7.2mbps. When you are talking about double or four times faster at these rates that makes a huge difference well it does IMO.

I don't get it. What's so great about iPhone? It hasn't got MMS, nor Cam recorder and only a 2mp cam. Sure 16gb harddrive, gps, big screen is cool, but there are other phones that can do that too.
And Apple talk about "astonishing new features", which are they?

I'm interested to know which devices have 7.2Mbps HSDPA other than SE's Broadband Data cards and VodaUK's USB modems. Can you elaborate please?

Lol you right I ddint know it supported HSDPA.
I guess HSDPA is a upgrade of 3G and both work on the 2100 band.
If I had to guess, Id say it was 3.6Mbs unless I had a very strong 1.8 Mb connection which is also very possible.
I was still impressed!
@ Car the most common phone on the market supporting 7.2 is the Samsung G800

@JK
Thanks, will have a look at that.

I'm somewhat disappointed to see cheaper materials in use from Apple - the plastic rear is just too tacky...
Posted by masseur
too tacky? it looks quite smooth to me
the volume buttons are no longer plastic but instead are metal
anyway, I'll reserve judgement until its in my hands... only 9 days 'till release!
Posted by Sony α
lol, Masseur -
Its just the change from Metal rear to Plastic - its rather strange, but then again - it keeps costs low!
Posted by masseur
I read in a few places that it was changed to plastic due to the addition and placement of the 3G antenna and GPS
Posted by captainsm
I for one think the shiny plastic is nicer than the boring grey matte metal on the old iPhone.
I hear AT&T will sell unlocked 16Gb iPhone 3G for USD 699, that's quite attractive i think.

@Carkitter
As i said most support 3.6mbps now but many new phones that are coming will support 7.2mbps but just from a quick look at Expansys.
Already released devices that support 7.2mbps HSDPA are
HTC Touch Diamond
MWg Atom V
and in the coming soon section is
HTC Touch Pro
LG SH 150n
SE Experia X1
A quick scan of Google aso showed the Moto Z8M which will suppport 7.2mbps HSDPA and there was an interesting post about Telestra launching there 7.2mbps HSDPA Network soon.
Most Networks have at least 3.6mbps HSDPA and will support 7.2mbps HSDPA shortly so whilst a lot of current devices support 3.6mbps. A lot of the new devices coming will be supporting 7.2mbps which is the future of mobile data and just so much faster than 384kbps 3G.

Telstra Australia have already launched 7.2mbps afaik.
and there are a few handsets supporting this that they offer. they have been available for a while now...
some of these phones arent released anywhere else. like the samsung a811 for example:
http://www.samsung.com/au/con[....]el_cd=MUGA811HSSXSA&fullspec=F
sorry for off topic, just pointing out 7.2mbps is available here.
Posted by masseur
Telstra use the 850Mhz for 3g and hsdpa which is why they use these strange phones. I had a Samsung A-somethign-or-other for a while with the Telstra branding and they do work very well
I guess this is also why Telstra are taking the iphone 3g on board as it supports 850mhz 3g hsdpa as well as the more common 2100mhz and 1900mhz 3g bands
Posted by Yakkaimono
Does the iphone 3g support adobe flash now?
Posted by masseur
no, but there is a rumour that adobe are going to make one themselves, now that the SDK is available
Posted by >500
@masseur
thats the reason i wont get a phone through Telstra. Since there range is quite limited. Also limited to their own phones, like the samsung a series. And they customise too much now.
Would have been a lot easier using 1900 or 2100 band for hsdpa. but theres no denying its one of the worlds best networks, technically speaking.
I read some where they are expecting 40mbps speeds by next year sometime. Not sure how reliable it was though...
sorry for off topic again
Posted by masseur
yeah, telstra are supposed to have 21mbps by end of 2008 and 42mbps in 2009... and all done on Ericsson equipment!
I read a story about some Telstra exec saying the iphone 3g would be able to utilise this but that clearly won't be the case
in fact I don't think even now there is any handset available that can use more than 7.2mbps
Posted by Superluminova
Ooh i can't wait for this now, just want o2 to confirm the payt pricing for the 16gb iPhone.

HSDPA does use 2100 band doesnt it?
New Zealand announced they using 900 aswell for HSDPA.
We have HSDPA 7.2 in Johannesburg South Africa. I think HSDPA max can reach 14MBs after that its Wimax, 50 - 75Mbs.
Posted by masseur
HSDPA is part of the UMTS standard and can be utilised on any band that UMTS is created for.
I believe HSDPA provides speeds up to 14.4mbps and from there to 42mbps its called HSPA+ but I've not taken much time to read up on that yet
