@boinng... theres rumour of an iPhone 3GSS coming out next year... or the iPhone 3G Slightly Speedier as its full name denotes!!!

Am in your boat too... i can upgrade to the 3GS but am gonna leave it and enjoy my 3G... speed is good on it and with 3.0 its all gravy.

And WOOT! peggle is 59p until June 14th! Get it its like crack!

I´ve just lost interest on the 3gs again...just saw prices for no contract version on Italy...600 and 700 euros (16 and 32gb version)! I imagine prices here will be similar.

hi there
I got a question to ask. When I upgrade to OS 3.0, is there a way to restore biteSMS as I purchased the full license?
I believe I know the answer, but perhaps mine is wrong.
Thanks!

So what time is Firmware 3.0 getting released? It's 6:40pm on the 17th here and I'm beginning to get impatient.

Posted by Boinng
I tried before work this morning (7am BST, Wednesday June 17th) and no deal. Presumably we're working to US time on this one, so it will actually be pretty late on the 17th (or even early on the 18th) for most of the rest of us..

It's a shame they can't automate the release across the timezones so we all get it at the right time for us - that would help them stagger the server load too.

I was thinking the same thing. As far as buzz around the internet/positive attitude towards Apple it would pay to roll it out across timezones.

Some not great news here - http://www.engadget.com/2009/[....]-3-0-release-still-hours-away/

Looks like at least another 7 hours or so from now, wherever you are..

Posted by carkitter
Aaah... nice work.

"...That would peg an OS 3.0 release anytime between 1700 and 1930 in London or between noon and 2:30pm in New York..."

Which would be about 5am here in Auckland, same as the WWDC keynote. Oh well, off to bed then.

Thanks Boinng

Hmm - the Register are claiming that Apple have said the software is delayed until "tomorrow" - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/06/17/iphone_3/

I find the article a bit sus though, since it's very vague generally on how this was announced (before 9.51 GMT apparently) and it's not been picked up or reported anywhere else. I can't find anything to back this up on the Apple site, which still says June 17th. Also, the article's by Bill Ray, who'll generally use any excuse to take a cheap shot at the iPhone and its users... so I wonder if this is just a poor writeup of the "story" that the OS won't be coming out till later today, which will be tomorrow for some of us outside the US...

EDIT - lack-of-panic over, the Reg have admitted their mistake - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/06/17/iphone_3_not_delayed/

EDIT 2 - the terrible thing is, since they've clearly embarrassed themselves The Register have taken both these stories off the front page. But while the first incorrect story above is still there if you click the link, the second one - correcting it and admitting they got it wrong - has been deleted altogether. Bit pathetic really.

I have seen on twitter that it will be relased at 9pm in th UK, anyone else heard that ???

Posted by Boinng
There are lots of rumours but the semi-official time I keep seeing is 6pm (BST). That makes sense as it's roughly the same time as the WWDC keynote last week and seems to be when Apple starts it's day..

Anyone had this: We could not complete your Itunes store request. The network connection timed out.

What does it mean

Posted by Boinng
Annoyingly, once your phone updates it has to to be "reactivated", presumably to verify that you're still you and your phone is stil yours, or somesuch. Anyway, to do that iTunes has to check in with Apple's verification servers (or the iTunes store as it calls it), and guess who else is trying to connect to those servers right now? Yep, the other 40 million people updating to OS 3 today!

Anyway it worked for me eventually after I clicked back and forth in iTunes for a while and sat through a few more of thoses messages as above. All seems worth it so far, I'm copying and pasting like a champ and the landscape keyboard's nice too. Best surprise so far has been to find Googlemaps is back in miles again for the UK! That's worth the update alone!

Oh man! I wish I'd waited before updating to 3.0. I keep getting "an unknown error has occured". And this just appears at random times when using the phone.

Also, wi-fi doesn't seem to work when updating apps. It works fine on internet though

ANyone else getting this?

Posted by masseur
@scouser_75, I don't think I've seen anyone have so much bad luck with iphones that you've had, I feel for you. Is this what getting a sim free one does for us though? makes me think twice

I uploaded 3.0 a week ago and its been smooth sailing all the way, and like boinng, I really love the landscape keyboards

Posted by SE-Naz
How you finding the 3.0 software? Overall impression!

Posted by masseur
overall I found it a bit snappier than before, cut and paste is useful, especially on Esato, and I've already mentioned the landscape keyboards... but probably the thing I have used most is the iphone search where you can search for just about any user data, anywhere, within the iphone and you get a clickable list of items so that you can go straight to the app that the data belongs to. this is accessed by pressing the home button when you're on the first page of icons, or simply scrolling to the page on the left from the first page of icons

Cheers Masseur

any jailbreaks for the 3.0 yet? I have far too many jailbroken apps to sacrifies for the new firmware so I guess I need to wait for the jailbreak

Posted by SE-Naz
Should be here very soon!!!

Posted by scouser_75
I'm finding it a lot slower and troublesome.

Wi-fi signal is sh1te.

Wi-Finder doesnt work.

internet is now also slow.

and randomly get "an unknown error has occurred"!!!

Anyone updated the original iPhone to 3.0?

Posted by masseur
I was curious about that too but my daughter is still running 1.4 jailbroken unlocked on the 16gb original iphone she inherited from me and she has customised it so much from the installer stuff that she won't let me anywhere near it to upgrade her despite me telling her, and showing her, all the new stuff!

Posted by Superluminova
Hahaha thats kids for you, always ones to stand in the way of progress, well at least it would be progress for me.

Posted by rule_breaker
I have the original 2g iphone but im not willing to risk all my customisation either I don't think its worth it. I'll just go get the new 3gs on friday instead

Now updated to 3.0 and no MMS - not supported by my network I guess.
Copy and paste will be useful and the landscape keyboards.
Currently syncing my Vaio and iPhone via BT. The Vaio supports A2DP.

MMS not supported by Vodafone NZ? that doesn't sound likely does it?

earlier there were issues with Italian unlocked iphone... surely there's not an issue with NZ unlocked iphone too?

Posted by carkitter
It's not happening.
Vista doesn't know where to find the BT drivers, anyone else know the location of the file? Is it in Bonjour or iTunes or...?
Only Apple could overcomplicate BT to this extent.

They refused to say what features they would be supporting and ended discussion on the matter last week. Who knows?

MMS works after a restart of the phone. Tethering is supported, but I'll try that later.
Still struggling with the BT connection.

the "unknown error" is to do with the iTunes store/activation. Last night I tried to update a couple of apps from the AppStore and it wanted me to agree to new T&C's in the iTunes store. The only problem was, with iTunes servers in the state they were, the terms weren't loading or it wasn't registering my response - I got the "unknown error" a couple of times and a "could not connect to iTunes store" other times. I gave up on that and all was well elsewhere.

This morning, while America sleeps, I tried those updates again and the new terms popped up and got agreed without a problem - so you might want to let your phone do whatever it was trying to do now.

As for the wifi - can't help you there I'm afraid, no difference here at all.

What I have noticed is the very occasional moment of unresponsiveness - it's not quiet as slick and stumble-free as the previous OS but I suspect that's just in the nature of .0 releases - I'm sure it will all get smoothed over and optimised again in 3.1, 3.2, and the rest.

LOL Well everything seems to have sorted itself out now!

As someone else mentioned the error message was purely down to iTunes being overloaded!

Wifi working as it should.

Back up to speed.

The only odd thing happening now is when I access safari without wifi sometimes I get the message "cellular data network not found" even though the page loads without any probs!!

any uk users having problems sending mms?

Posted by smilerthe cheshirecat
Have you requested MMS update to your tarriff from o2 Ace?

Text MMS to 1010.... is taking a while though.....

Posted by Boinng
MMS won't work until O2 enable it - you'll get a text from 1010 when that happens. If you're worried they're ignoring you, you can text MMS to 1010 for free, but it should happen automatically. It took a full 24 hours (from update) for me though, during which I had an apology from 1010 for how long it was taking to activate everybody.

i had a text from o2 along the following lines:

were setting up your mms now

and then recieved an MMS.

is this what your talking about?

Posted by Boinng
Sort of - after upgrading on Wednesday evening and prompting them with a text to 1010 early Thursday morning, I actually had a text from them at 2.20pm apologising -

Hello. We know you are waiting for MMS to be set up on your iPhone. We're sorry. We are working as fast as we can and you should be set up within a few hours.

Then in the evening at 6.24 I had this -

All done. You're now set up to use Picture Messaging. Enjoy!

Whether that last message was an actual MMS I'm not sure, no way of telling on the iPhone really - it was just text, no picture.

To be honest I haven't sent or received any MMS yet, I'm just assuming it works now.. I tried to send one on Wednesday evening (when it obviously wasn't set up) and got a send failure message, but that at least let me try out the new feature without costing me anything

mms works well

pictures appear like this

and you just tap the bubble to see it full screen

Posted by scouser_75
Guys can any one confirm if Push is now working properly and as it should on 3.0?

Posted by carkitter
Got the BT working but you wouldn't know it from the driver error that Vista is still showing.
Anyway, after pairing the iPhone and ignoring the driver error, I right click on the icon and get this window:

And on the iPhone appears this:

And now the iPhone is streaming a very bumpy sounding Audioslave to my Vaio. I think I need more RAM.
By comparison, my V640i virtually connected itself and streamed audio with no problem...
