the dust is fairly scattered, probably about 10 or so small fragments, but 3 or 4 larger ones that have now become noticeable in some light situations and which are particularly annoying when watching videos

Posted by RyaN
197! Bah! You're pretty good at it then masseur lol I've just had a go and got 6! I can already see how it all gets quite confusing!!

@Boinng Very true with re: the software update, at least with the iPhone there are regular updates to the software - and in this next case, a rather major one!

@masseur - to un-do the jailbreak just simply restore it in iTunes and you're done. Sorry to hear about your dust problem too... pretty annoying. Mine is still due to go back for a swapsie

Posted by carkitter
@Masseur

I noticed dust under the screen of mine too, the other day but it's not significant so I'll ignore it for the time being. Getting it serviced would mean I'd need to prepare myself to be without it... There are no 5800's or W890's at my place to ease the pain, only a V800 for sentimental reasons.

Posted by masseur
earlier today I organised an "Advanced Replacement Service" where they send me a replacement iPhone and then I send mine back to them

so I should be sorted by early next week

fingers crossed I don't get some other issue with the replacement as mine has been perfect with the exception of the recent unexpected dustbuster functionality!

btw, I've seen the recent iPhone app ads on TV but I bet they don't have an app for this!

Posted by masseur
got the replacement via UPS yesterday and I'm happy again. The replacement phone certainly looks totally new with no marks and totally shiny again!

although you have to pay £30 for the advance replacement service (where they send you the new phone and then you send back the old), its well worth it and its very well done as UPS deliver the new phone and then come back and collect the old phone when you're ready (although make sure you do it within 10 days or you get charged full price for the new phone)

the resynch of my data was flawless with the exception that my wifi setting got lost somehow.

I did the the "Erase all contents and settings" on the old iphone and I can't believe what is essentially a master reset took an hour! Apple told me to expect that too!
At the end of it the iphone got stuck on reboot at the apple logo so I had to do a restore to get it going again. Not sure if that was a consequence of it having been jailbroken

having done this now, I'm wondering if I should have waited until early July, just before the warranty runs out, to get this replacement

I think Apple should be on Orange lol

Posted by masseur
it is... in France

Posted by Bonovox
Oh yeah i forgot that but there is a rumour is there not about it on Orange? The usual rumours but i guess its a matter of time. It was actually meant as a poor joke Apple Orange lol

Posted by masseur
well, if you're talking UK and we're talking rumours... don't forget that O2 supposedly have a 5 year contract on iPhones

Posted by Bonovox
Oh its 5 years yes i am talking UK. Why where are you?

Well sorry for the intrusion, just wanna ask what's the best free document viewer application for you I want the free one as usually I just need to check it mobile, for the rest my laptop will handle it.

Thanks anyway

Posted by carkitter
Doesn't the iPhone have a document viewer as standard? For editing you need an app though. Apparently MS Office for iPhone is under development and I'm happy to wait for that. Hope it doesn't cost too much!

Posted by ocean21
I'm using Files Lite now, so far so good and it exceeds my expection

Ok, i'm now semi-addicted to Flight Control...(thanks guys!)

My best thus far is 46 but i'm working on it.

I have to say @masseur... what is wrong with you!! 196! That's insane!! Is it your pilot instinct helping you out here?

Posted by masseur
lol, I'm dissapointed. After I restored onto the replacement iphone, my high score was lost.
I've had a half dozen games since then and am back to 102 but I guess I'll have to try to break 200

Posted by RyaN
Thats a bit of a dissapointment indeed. Shoddy that it didnt restore the data on to the new handset

I'm really gonna have to practise to get up to your levels i feel!

Posted by lemmy31
My iPhone is running 2.21 firmware and although I know at the moment it can't be unlocked will jailbreaking it cause any problems with future unlock potential

Regards Craig

Posted by kulorex
Don't know but i think firmware 2.2.1 can be unlocked for both 2g and 3g

Posted by RyaN
Now you've already upgraded your firmware to 2.2.1 the baseband version has changed to 2.30 (if you did this by official means ie using iTunes... i say this as you can update the fw to 2.2.1 using Pwnage tool and preserve the 2.28 unlockable baseband)

Jailbreaking your 2.2.1 wont make any difference to the baseband version now, so feel free

There is a baseband downgrade solution, however your handset has to have been manufactured pre-September 2008 to have the right bootloader version

Posted by lemmy31
I got the the handset, used ,with 2.21 on , so i dont know wether it came like that from new or wether it was upgraded via itunes. So jailbreaking will make no difference at all ? Im almost certain it was manufactured after sept 2008

Regards Craig

Posted by RyaN
Nup, jailbreaking will make absolutely no difference to the baseband/unlocking potential whatsoever. The 2.30 baseband will eventually be broken down by the Dev-Team so hang tight, an unlock solution prob wont take too long.

Posted by masseur
I'm still using my little sim thing that slots in with the sim card when I need to use another sim (like back in Australia last week)

so far its worked across all firmware/baseband updates without the need to worry

Posted by RyaN
Has there ever been any instability with dropped connections? Also with 3G?

Posted by masseur
its always behaved just as expected though I don't do much data using my aussie sim card as I've only got a basic plan there while I am mostly in UK

Posted by RyaN
woohoo! I have a new high score on Flight Control

Posted by ocean21
Darn, you guys are pretty good, I can't go more than 50's at the moment, keep practicing

Now I'm addicted with NFS undercover, the graphic is awesome for a mobile phone, I'm amazed

Anyway I'm looking for a silicon case and I found this product in the Apple Store
http://www.iphone-cases.org/pictures/iphone-silicone-case-48.jpg
S$39, quite expensive, I don't think it's worthed but haven't seen any other case than I prefer.

some specs of the Iphone 2009

http://www.gsmarena.com/a_lea[....]cs_of_iphone_2009-news-906.php

Posted by RyaN
@ocean21 My previous best before today was 46, so it is just a case of practising

As for the case, silicone cases are all much of a muchness IMO. Obviously you dont wanna be going for a cheap one of eBay etc, so stick to the Apple Store.... $39 is pretty expensive, but thats what brand names charge! Belkin do some nice silicone cases. Personally I have an Incase Slider as i prefer a bit more protection

@Radu_91 Cheers for the link... read something about that Chinese leak earlier, if the rumours are true... the updated specs are much to be expected really and nothing shocking or surprising. Exactly what I predicted. But as they say, if it aint broke dont fix it...a few small hardware upgrades are all that's needed

Posted by ocean21
Yes Ryan, Belkin does have some nice cases, but afaik mostly compatible for iPhone 3G for that reason I'm looking for silicon cases as they're flexible thus compatible for both types.

If Apple only improves the software, seems like I'll skip this new iPhone model. I have way many reason to skip the 3G to, still sticking with the good-old reliable one

Posted by RyaN
Yeah but support for the 2G really is being fazed out, as for instance there's gonna be no support for A2DP bluetooth profile etc that is coming out with OS 3.0, like there will be for the 3G model.

I think perhaps you're getting confused with hardware and software! Apple has already shown what they're gonna improve with the software when they showcased OS 3.0, and of course they will update the hardware in the next iPhone revision... there would be no point in bringing out a new model if it had the same hardware specifications!

Posted by Boinng
That's true, the original ("2G") iPhone won't be compatible with the bluetooth improvements or the MMS coming in OS3.0 apparently, so it won't get quite such an upgrade as the 3G. Plus it doesn't have GPS of course, so it can't benefit from the relaxation on turn-by-turn satnav apps in the Appstore, so no TomTom for the 2G.

Of course it's still getting some other improvements and is probably still the best supported two-year-old phone on the market.

I still think the big ticket for the next iPhone will be video recording - done in Apple style, meaning it'll actually be good. There's already evidence of video editing software in OS3.0, which is something that's not been seen on any phone before, and of course Youtube upload etc. I think they'll be really pushing that "Flip Video" angle, which of course won't be coming to either of the older phones.

Posted by voda_jon
@boinng.... some nokias came with video editing on them... wasnt too good but still edited clips together to create little movies which was ok like.

I myself am happy with the white 3g iphone i have and unless apple offer something i need (16gb is enough and dont use the cam) i'll just be happy upgrading OS to 3.0.

J./

Posted by Boinng
I stand corrected on the editing - I bet Apple will still claim it as a first, though! They're in a good position to really popularise the whole idea.

Ahem, Video DJ?

An absolutely stunning feature of my V640i. I've made some really good home movies using still photos with Photo DJ effects included, opening titles and incorporating AAC audio soundtracks as well.

Well, these are some reasons of mine to stick with the 2G model, I state this in my humble opinion

1. Hardware wise, obviously I prefer full metal case than plastic case. I've been seeing many problems related to just this plastic material such as cracking, fragile build quality. I know there are many casing protections around, so maybe not really a matter for you guys

Moreover from what I've read, the new iPhone will have 3.2 mpix camera, gimmick like digital compass, etc. I still have my C905 to support iPhone's lacking

2. Software wise, I got eveything that 3G has except A2DP support, HSPDA, and A-GPS. Because myself is not really a power user, it's not really a deep pit.
- In here where I'm staying now, you get a WiFi coverage almost everywhere, school, home, office, etc. It is free, it is fast, what more do you want?
- I never fully utilised GPS, as I don't need it, period.
- OS 3 for 2G doesn't include MMS, I never sent MMS up to now.

Well that's all

Posted by Boinng
Fair enough, I have to admit I'd prefer the metal case of the first iPhone, it was a better design from a durability point of view, just not so good for GPS and HSDPA reception (which isn't an issue with the 2G, obviously).

I still wouldn't write the next model off just yet, I've a feeling they're going to surprise people with the camera/video quality (even if it is "only" 3.2mp, in devices this size it's what you do with it that counts). And they may well have come up with a better solution for the back, too.

BTW - I think this app is genius, and I was the first one in the comments to say so, too - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/05/14/email_n_walk/

A small problem with my iphone.
when i am not using wifi i am unable to send emails even if i have a 3g signal. i have an aol email account which i have re entered the settings including the password but no luck. The thing i find strange is i can receive emails no problem
any ideas??
thanks

Posted by masseur
generally, network providers, including mobile phone carriers, rarely let you send email through their server unless you are actually connected to their system. this is to protect against their service being used for spam

so assuming I understood correctly, you have AOL settings for sending and receiving email in your iphone, and this works when connected at home via wifi, i.e. AOL, but when you're not on wifi, i.e. you're on O2, it doesn't work.

the way around that is to click on "outgoing mail server" in the email account settings and in the smtp settings, enable "use SSL" and set authentication as password. that should sort you out. works for me using my aussie email provider and also tmobile in uk

Hi,
Thanks masseur you are a legend seems to have done the trick.

well done guys!
I haven't managed to beat my 272 yet on the standard layout yet.
Lately I've been trying the aircraft carrier as its fairly manic from the start and a bit more of a challenge.
So far I'm up to 78!

78~?!

So....
What time is the WWDC keynote speech and is there a live webcast? Or is it best to wait for it to hit Youtube?

Posted by RyaN
It'll be 10am Cupertino time, 5pm BST, 4pm GMT (not sure NZ time, +11hrs GMT??). I'm sure there'll be a live webcast on the go somewhere, Gizmodo and Engadget will will be doing the usual live blog also. Gonna be scouting around for the next few hours so if i come across a live webcast link i'll post it here.

More than likely i'm just gonna be following updates via Twitter

Posted by Boinng
I think it's 6pm BST (actual time in the UK), isn't it? That's when I'm tuning in to Engadget anyway.

I'm sure whatever they announce will amaze, surprise, and dissapoint (someone) in equal measure, but I'll be happy as long as its (a) still going to be worth upgrading to next April, and (b) doesn't upset the existing eco-system too much, I can live with my 3G for a good while yet as long as the app developers etc don't go leaving it behind...

EDIT - this is Engadget's pageholder for the live coverage, to be updated later, complete with start times around the world - http://www.engadget.com/2009/[....]r-keynote-live-from-wwdc-2009/

I am very excited about the announcements tonight

I'm refusing to talk to my Mrs between the hours of 6 & 7pm unless her conversation contains the word iPhone
