tomtom Big M? where's that mentioned?
Posted by masseur
its been known for almost a year that tomtom have a working version of their software on the iphone, but previous Apple rules prevented it being released
now that Apple have relaxed this rules, I would expect them to be one of the first in line to release their software

Looks like there's lots of good things to come in 3.0. Makes me wonder what the next handset will look like
Posted by ares
will still jailbreak though: video, background apps, today screen etc etc
and all those notifications can be annnoying without a proper system to handle them, like the pre does

This OS update got me thinking about what will apple do for the next iphone version. It seems they´ve ´completed´ the current platform by adding pretty much all that should´ve been there since the beginning plus a couple of new things. What will they have for iphone ´4G´ that will make people buy it instead of just upgrading their 3G devices?
Another interesting thing is how smart apple was. They added little by little features that were considered crucial and managed to sell 17m iphones before actually releasing the full OS version. Why release the full package if I can release a basic one and keep it alive for 2 years with software updates?

your thoughts are very valid, and certainly this is what has kept some people away.
but I can, and always have, seen their logic in excluding certain features in their first o/s while they provide a dual path from their music/video only devices to their phone and multi media devices
now that they have established themselves with both fans of their audio devices and new people who have taken the time to spend time with the iphone and ipod touch and come to love it, rather than those who simply dismiss it on features or after a few hours use, its good that Apple are now advancing to meet industry standards and I fully expect they will start to lead the way in areas that they already have not covered (interface, integrated capabilities etc)
lets call it "coming of age"

I think that with OS 3.0 Apple is really trying to expand marketshare even further, rather than pleasing existing customers or even innovate substantily. This OS comes mainly to adress shortcomings that might´ve kept people from buying iphones such as landscape keyboard through out the OS and MMS for example. Apple in it´s minimalistic design didn´t seem to think a ´landscape´ mode was necessary in all apps but now they are offering it because it will probably please new customers; or MMS which is in the end of the day a very ´low´ way of sharing photos, even lower considering the iphone came with a very advanced mail app in terms of graphics and layout. It made sense not to include MMS to propel email. But the´ve added MMS now... again I guess for marketshare reasons.
I´m not saying OS 3.0 is not good, quite the contrary, it´s VERY welcome! However I miss a bit the part where apple innovated and cared more about doing new things rather than ´pleasing market standards and etc´, like they did for example with the app store model and the UI.

Heres the page for the new OS. Hit the quicktime link in there to watch the keynote. I think it´s worth it! I´m excited about 3.0. If only they´ve improved the hardware and the battery too a bit to support more complex games/apps and background processes for app store apps, the iphone OS 3.0 would be the dream phone!

I think the most impressive stuff will come from 3rd parties, when they start using all the new APIs

Finally, I might consider getting one after all.. still a tad dumb for my liking.. but way better than it was before.

Never had one before and am thinking of getting an unlocked version,(16gb 3g).
Should I wait now ?, what are the chances of a "new iphone" in the summer ?.
Posted by SloopJohnB
Apple will release a new iphone this summer, can´t see why they wouldn´t. The new version will bring hardware improvements like the 3G did last year.

Not that im disputing a hardware re version in the summer but I doubt it will be called iphone 4g. Im pretty sure 4G is the codename for next gen network after 3g.

I wanted to know if anyone here installed the beta 3 yet?
Posted by SloopJohnB
bavlondon2,
I know what 4G is... that´s why I typed ´4G´ instead of 4G, just so people would know I was refering to the model right after the Iphone 3G, not the actual 4G technology.
masseur,
I ´ve read on a couple of blogs that people are having problems trying to install beta OS 3.0, I guess it recognizes when your iphone is not part of the SDK program.

I am in the developer program though I haven't downloaded the sdk yet as I haven't got a mac yet
Just wondered if the beta required to be installed via sdk on mac or whether iTunes was enough

Whats the best n95 8gb or iphone 3g im confused i want to change my n95 8gb
This message was posted from a N95_8GB

I think iPhone 3G is better (or the new iphone that´s coming out this summer). Taking a look at OS 3.0, you can tell how Apple is serious about pushing mobile app development further and further. In a few months time, apps for the iphone will get even more complex and robust, I don´t think N95 8GB will get that level of development in the same time. Go with the iPhone.

Shame on you!
You love your iPhone but haven't quite bitten the bullet and get mac yet, even Nanu is dipping his feet in and getting a G3 iBook, just to see if osx is as good as I claim!
Chop chop Big M!

well, I've been tempted before but now that I can possibly make some extra money from iphone development I more keen than ever
I've been programming since I was 14 years old back in '75 and have done almost every popular language since then and so I don't see the iphone as an issue, though coming up with an app that will prove popular might be a tough challenge given the number of apps already out there and the number of developers just sitting there dreaming up stuff
so now I'm more keen than ever to take the plunge
but is there really a similarity between iphone and mac such that as a keen iphone user I will find the mac as enjoyable?
Posted by Mr Miyagi
masseur once you get a mac. I don't think you will ever look back at windows. I have had my mac for 2 years now and love it.
Posted by smilerthe cheshirecat
You will love the Mac in a very similar way Masseur.... truly....
I have been a Mac convert for 5 years + and I am forever frustrated when I have to use a Windows in XP or Vista form....
Do you need any app suggestions ?
Posted by Mr Miyagi
I don't know if this has been posted elsewhere. But strong rumour is that a new iphone will be coming on the market from May this year.
Posted by fatreg
Well.....
Consider the spring board on your iPhone to be the dock on a mac, safari also works in a similar way, I'm sure you are aware but it's all built in a unix kernal so if you've programmed etc you'll know unix, Apple stores are more than happy for you go and hassle them about macs and let you play with them in store for as long as it takes for you to want one, I personally didn't like the iPhone, text entry for me was a nightmare, I possibly didn't spend enough time getting used to it, but I use my phone an awful awful lot (I've sent just shy of 100 sms today) so rely on text entry a lot!
It will be the best move you ever make Big M, I'm not saying this as a mac fanboy but as a ex-Windows user!

Nicely put fatreg...
The iphone keyboard did take some getting used to.... and I nearly missed the physical keyboard of on a recent trip to Finland.... but my pinkies braved the temperatures

This beta release has serious issues, plus YOU CAN NOT GO BACK TO YOUR PREVIOUS SOFTWARE VERSION, SO BE AWARE.

I wanted to cheat though, but from what i can see i can't install OSX on my current windows machine without reformatting the entire hard drive - which aint gonna happen!
@ares You been tempted yet with the shiny new beta?

still considering it

The best thing that you can buy @ares
I have my iMac for 2 years now and it's great

@borg_ lol it's not @ares thats wanting a mac!

well, would not dislike that too...
but will hackintosh my pc first

thats what i want to do too - if i'm able to
btw loving this EAlert app from RockYourPhone.com. Works perfectly, and a brief email notification system was much needed to save you coming out of something and going in to mail only to see it's a pointless e-newsletter for firebox.com or whatever lol

If everyone used macs it'd be boring as kids and idiots would write viruses etc for them, they need to stay niche, but people in the know should use them...

i dropped my iphone in water yesterday! plucked it out the screen flashed white, and error message about incompatible accessory popped up:(
rushed to put it in front of a fan heater, after about 2hours everything seems fine
but i seem to be getting a lower strength 3G signal though, or maybe i am just being paranoid
Posted by RyaN
oh f*ck!
Personally i wouldn't have been so eager to turn it back on after that. You should've left it a good couple of days to air out. Itchy fingers though - i understand!
How weak is weak though? Noticably different, like you were getting 5 bars before and now only 1?
Posted by NoKia
i know, but it was on and i was too scared to turn it off just in case it didnt come back on
well at home i normally get about 3bars, now it flunctuates btw 1 and 2
Posted by RyaN
You should've turned it off straight away, once the water is inside and the electric current is still running thats when the problems occur. You are damn lucky it's still working!
As for the signal, thats not too bad... not a lot you can do now though. Warranty is screwed
So did you drop it down the loo? Hope you'd flushed beforehand!
