Sorry to hear that man. Any way to get it back? Via insurance, carrier?
Call your service provider and block the phone!

Thanks NoKia & Smiler, thats good to know.

A real bonus would be if the installed car ipod connector also worked as the hands free kit? guess that would be asking too much though

cheers

A quick bit of advice needed from one of you iphone experts please. I have just got a 16gb 3g iphone with 2.1 firmware and 02.11.07 baseband, i 've been looking around for info on jailbreaking and possible future unlock. It appears if i upgrade at the moment to 2.2.1 this will change the baseband and make any unlock impossible. My question is, as this is a new device and has never been jailbroken before can i use the method here :
http://www.theiphoneblog.com/[....]eak-iphone-22-mac-os-edition/. If this is not a good way of going about it id appreciate any guidance as i dont really want to end up "bricking" the device.

As always thanks in advance for any help

Regards Craig

Music file transfer will be coming in the next update afaik. Now that would be awesome! And i know i normally would say the same, but i'm a bit out of sync this week after moving in to a new place.

Can we access the root folder using ibluetooth then? Say i wanted to send a mate a bunch on icons from a theme... can i do that?

Posted by masseur
tell me more... tell me more!

where is this BT file transfer stuff?

Posted by RyaN
in Cydia, should be under the iSpazio repository, which is a community source Costs €3.99 though - but i think that it's worth it for that.

Posted by ares
well, the price is justified if Medevil really intends to purchase a new bluetooth stack to use instead of iphone´s native crapy one, or doing a complete new one....

that way we will have it running has a backgound process, and other profiles like a2dp, much quicker

Posted by RyaN
yeh, fingers crossed. He should generate a shed load of cash for this, when i checked last night it had 22,000 downloads and even if 10% of those peeps buy it thats a lot of money!

yes you can access the entire file system, music file transfer will be fantastic!

i am still using the demo license, will wait and see the developments before i decide whether to buy or not

the interwebs are gonna explode...apple is previewing Iphone OS 3.0 on the 16th!!!

Posted by RyaN
I thought it was the 17th?

Posted by NoKia
lol ...i think i am more concerned about when they will preview the jailbreak 3.0

Posted by RyaN
Or if it's jailbreakable. By the looks of things, this OS will probably come on the new iPhone too, much like the 2.0 release in tandem with the iPhone 3G.

Us jailbreakers should be ok though, as they've fully pwned the 2g touch now forever, so hopefully they'll be building this new OS around that same, exploitable, framework

Posted by ares
yes, its 17 Ryan lol

i rather hope the new OS makes jailbreak to not be needed or at least, so much

Posted by RyaN
Roll on Tuesday!

And i agree, but i just dont see Apple implementing enough. Backgrounding would be interesting though if that happened. Im sure it'd be massively more efficient than the current JB solution.

Nothing wrong with what has been implemented in the iPhone, the profiles that are missing have been left out on purpose. I use my iPhone 3G with a Nokia CK-15W BT carkit and the phone tranfers the full range of info including BT name, contact list, battery level, reception quality and operator name, just like my V640i and the connection is very stable. It doesn't work with voice dialing but then neither does my wife's Samsung.

BTW, what are the chances of Apple joining two iPhones together with a hinge to make a netbook? There's heaps of speculation about such a device. If it was the size of the current iPhone I would probably buy it.

I don't see Apple changing the current iPhone much this year, probably just more memory, range of colours and lower price.

OK.....i need advice. Ive read and read and i still cant decide what to do. I have a locked 3g iphone (never been jailbroken ?) and running 2.1 firmware. At the moment i have no intention of sim unlocking it, but i would like to jailbreak it. My question is, can i download a 2.2 ipsw and just shift/restore in itunes, is it as easy as that ? and then jailbreak the 2.2 firmware, i dont want to upgrade to 2.2.1 at the moment. I really dont want to end up damaging the phone.

Thanks in advance again

well, like it is, it does not support a2dp and other advanced bt profiles at all...the bt stack needs to be updated, by Apple, or 3rd party...that was my point.

Hi Lemmy

Yep, you'll be perfectly safe doing that. The latest version of QuickPwn should be backwards compatible with 2.2

Posted by lemmy31
Thanks for that Ryan so just to confirm i can get a 2.2 ipsw and just shift/restore through itunes onto my phone running 2.1 that has never been unlocked or jailbroken at all.

Thanks again Craig

Posted by RyaN
Yep, just hold shift and click restore, and you'll be able to select the firmware. Good to make sure you've done a 'Backup' first.

Thanks again, much appreciated RyaN

No and No.
I didn't like the iPhone contracts (iPlan) my Operator (Orange) offered to me when i wanted to buy the iPhone 3G from then so I bought the iPhone from another person and used it with my Orange SIM.

@RyaN

Thanks for getting back to me...

I will look into it...

Can you delete the feed once you have read it??? Or does it delete after a certain period???

Thanks
ENJOY

Posted by RyaN
@Coquito Shizer Do you not have any home insurance cover that covers personal belongings?

Big bummer mate. You thinking about getting your hands on another one, like once you've saved the cash?

@SE-Naz

Unfortunately not, it seems to leave them in there.... and lists 50 articles on the page, much like MobileMail displays ie 25 emails. But you can obviously mark all as read etc. I think other apps like the free RSS reader you can delete individual articles by doing a swipe and then delete.

Posted by SE-Naz
@RyaN

OKKK... So it lists always the last 50 is that whay you are saying???

Thanks again for your help

Cheers
ENJOY

What is implemented works well, and Apple doesn't get any credit for it. I'm really impressed with the way it works with my two carkits and my HBH-PV705. Just read through the threads complaining about how the P-series doesn't connect properly, how it doesn't transfer contact lists properly. I've had feedback from customers that Motorola phones don't connect well with SE carkits and SE phones that don't connect well with Nokia carkits. No such issues with Apple - their BT stack is limited but it can't be called crappy.

What Apple have shown over the years is that they don't go in for spec races, they pick a few core functions and do them exceptionally well. If you're expecting the iPhone to come up to your standard of BT, I think you'll be disappointed.

I agree with the A2DP comment though, I can't see a good reason not to include it.

Edit: Time to address the elephant in the room.
Apple have released a closed platform for one reason only - to try to fight illegal file sharing and copyright infringement - not to annoy people.

I have a friend at Uni who openly admits that the iPhone platform is unsuitable for him because he is unwilling to download his Applications legally and pay for them, therefore he will be staying with WM. I worry about the kind of thinking that says he wants to earn his living in the IT industry but deny others their income. How can one be a professional without ethics?

Platforms which support illegal downloading will not be supported by App developers in the future and governments are already requiring ISP's to make internet users accountable for illegal filesharing. In NZ legislation is being debated which will disconnect users from the internet for illegal filesharing and internet cafe owners are being prosecuted for allowing customers to view pirated movies online.

People got away with it when it was done quietly, but now that everyone does it, the consequences are coming. I'd expect more platforms to become tightly controlled because when people can't control their own behaviour, they get their options reduced.

Gee, the silence is deafening.

We can't look the other way anymore, this issue is coming to the fore.

This is why Mobile platforms are going Open Source. This is why so many companies and App developers want to work with the iPhone and this is why the Jailbreak community are so desperate to hack Apples products.

DRM free and low price alternatives to illegal filesharing are now arriving. Pirate Bay is in court defending their actions. Significant revenues are being diverted and in this financial environment it won't be allowed to continue.

Posted by SloopJohnB
Just to kill the silence...
iPhone OS 3.0 is coming!!!
Will they make something actually new or just copy a couple of things from the hackers like they always do?
We´ll know on tuesday.

Posted by ares
Indeed

@carkitter, well, Apple failed in that aspec...despite all the security, piracy exists on the Iphone scene...its not hard to get apps you did not purchase on the iphone

So what´s the point of locking stuff that serious users need?

Posted by carkitter
I don't feel Apple failed. It's much easier to find legitimate Apps than otherwise. And many of the Apps are free so no complaints there. I buy all my music on CD and import to iTunes for my personal use because I like to maintain control of music I pay for.

Posted by voda_jon
@carkitter....

i disagree with the comment about being easier to find free apps than warez. i can find both very easily.

All am hoping for is a little.... 'Just one more thing...' and a new, smaller iPhone would make me happy today. Its a long shot but u never know!

Posted by masseur
I wouldn't want a smaller iPhone. The screen size is one of its best points for me and its one of the few phones I can use without my glasses (or without squinting!)

I could actually live with a slightly larger iPhone if it remained as slim as it is now (or slimmer!)

Posted by ares
yeah, i also do not mind one a bit larger, with a a bigger screen

anyway, today is all about software

Posted by RyaN
No no, not bigger! The Omnia HD looks huge and wouldnt the iPhone to get as big as that - bigger screen or not!

5 hours 20 mins and counting

Apple previews iPhone OS 3.0, adds copy and paste, Spotlight search, plenty more

As promised, Apple just debuted its upcoming iPhone OS 3.0. Much of the news seemed developer-centric, but there are certainly plenty of consumer implications down the road, along with long-awaited functions like copy and paste, A2DP, MMS and universal Spotlight search. Improvements include:

App and developer functionality
Peer-to-peer connectivity over Bluetooth for gaming and other info-swapping.
Paid apps will have the potential to be subscription fee-based, and can include optional paid content that can be bought from right inside the app.
Developers can now build apps that call out to Google Maps, and can also finally bring Apple-blessed turn-by-turn to the phone.
Devs can also connect with hardware accessories over in their apps now, such as a blood pressure monitor -- or perhaps a keyboard? Connectivity works through the dock connector or over Bluetooth.
Long-promised push functionality will at last be included, but apps won't run in the background.
Developers can add streaming video and audio to their apps, along with in-game voice use.

General functionality
Cut, copy and paste. At last! You can shake the phone to undo and redo the action, and it works with both text and photos, allowing Mail to send multiple photos at a time.
MMS, along with forward and delete for multiple messages.
A2DP stereo Bluetooth.
Unlocked Bluetooth functionality on 2G iPod touch.
Spotlight has been added to a new home screen page to the left of existing pages, allowing for universal search on the phone.
Tethering is built into 3.0, and Apple will work with carriers on that -- who will have the last say on its implementation, most likely.
App Store will be available in 77 countries.
Parental controls for TV shows, movies and App Store apps.
Auto-login for WiFi hotspots.

Apple apps
A new app called Voice Memos which lets you record notes and reminders.
A revised Stocks app, with news stories and a landscape view.
Landscape view available for Mail, Text and Notes.
CalDAV support has been added to Calendar, along with subscriptions support in the .ics format.
Apple's major apps have all been expanded with search functionality.
Note syncing to Mac and PC.
YouTube account support.
Form auto-fill.
Phishing protection.
Shake the shuffle iPod playback.

A developer beta of OS 3.0 is available today, and the 3.0 update will be coming to consumers this summer as a free update to all iPhone 3G customers. It'll also work for 1st gen iPhone owners, though they won't receive A2DP or MMS due to hardware limitations. iPod touch owners will be able to update for $9.95, just like last time.

Really excited about this update. Love the new search home screen.

a-maz-ing how much they're packing into this next version

let the dissenters dismiss the iPhone now

prime here for me is the :-
auto-login at hotspots, though I already have that for O2 affiliated sites
cut and paste... which I do miss when replying to posts here via my iphone
the A2DP... so I can dump the accessory I use that plugs into the bottom of the iphone
and tomtom... as presumably they'll be able to release their software now (not really getting on with xGPS)
note synching... as I have alot of useful notes in outlook

also, the youtube account support was something I missed recently and mentioned in this discussion
