I just registered my interest online with O2 regarding the new iphone on pay and go. Hopefully they will get back to me when they say they will.
Does anyone know the pay as you go price yet.
Posted by masseur
no, its not been announced and I've seen no rumours for the pricing structure
Posted by scouser_75
I would hazzard a calculated guess at the prices being around the prices for the previous iPhone models.
Posted by masseur
that would also be my guess, and as I mentioned before, probably the only way we'll be able to do anything like we used to in terms of unlocking and jailbreaking
but that would be fine by me as I don't want an o2 contract if I can help it

Hi Masseur,
Like most i am very curious to see if it can be hacked but more interested to see just how many of the new functions will work if not registered and activated properly. As it seems many of these things may use connections with the Apple servers and Apple may well block devices not officially activated.
I suppose we just need to wait for it's release and see how it plays out well at least it's not to long t wait.

I would hazard a guess that it will be £269 for the handset on Pay & Go, and that there will be special Pay & Go tariffs.
I would imagine that you would get free unlimited internet, calls, texts etc. if you top up an obscene amount each month, in which case it would actually be cheaper to take out the contract, in my opinion.
Posted by masseur
@Dogmann, I guess they could have blocked access to the itunes store even now if this was their mentality, and though they are certainly toughening their stance, I wonder if they will take it that far
either way, I know I won't be buying until I've seen some answers to these types of questions
Posted by Muhammad-Oli
If they blocked access to features like the iTunes music store, they'd miss out on a lot of money. And for that reason I believe they won't be too strict on people. They may block some features, but the real money-makers will probably be left to collect the cash. Its all about profit.

I dont bother with things like downloading tracks from providers anyway. I get all my music from my collection from my pc to phone. As i said i cant get an O2 contract they wont let me. I top up with O2 around 40 quid per month but i get alot back in free allowances treats and rewards so its not bad really. I pay for unlimited data each month but having problems right now their internet is slow and crashing all the time. Hope it improves with the iphone.

It seems abit pointless to actually get one on pay and go, fair enough to hack it if your on contract with another provider is one thing but to fully utilize wifi and safari out and about will be costly without a contract, what you get on the £35 tariff is pretty good, plus £99 for the phone.
Posted by masseur
the problem is that what you are also getting with the contract is... O2
having recently switched from t-mobile to o2 and then moved back after only 6 weeks, I have no real desire to commit 18 months to them and anyway, I'm certain there will be a 32gb iphone sometime soon, probably even later this year (?)
Posted by haynesycop
I've never had any problems with them myself but then again i've known people who have, your probably right about the 32GB model and when that comes out i'll get that but i'll still be getting the 16GB model next month.
I just think that to go one pay and go you'll end up paying more on topping up to use data as well as calls and texts than you would on contract, after all that is what the device was made for, to utilize the safari browser and push email.
I can fully understand people wanting to hack it to use with another provider on contract, nobody wants to take out another contract, or wait until a current one is up.
Posted by masseur
but its not just unlocking I want, I want it jailbroken so I can use the apps I use now, unless those same apps become available in the app shop in which case that issue goes away I guess
Posted by haynesycop
I'm sure there will be a workaround eventually after all nothing is infallible.

But i have the O2 Web Bolt On on pay and go which is 7.50 per month i can access any sites too. Its just that the network is not stable never works very well even with high coverage. If i top up £30 or more per month i get either unlimited texts or unlimited mins per month. The mins are from postcode area but still great. Plus extra treats and credit back. On top of that the web bolt on. So really im getting alot free for same amount i would spend on a contract per month. The credit i top up with i use for other things. Im pretty sure the iphone will work well enough on pre pay anyway money is no object for me right now i have a works bonus coming and savings. I just wish the iphone would come out on other networks its getting boring just on one network.

Is anyone here going to camp outside the store when its out the night before. Did anyone here do it last time. I might wait the night before just so i can get one this time. Though not camping outside. Lol.
Posted by mswallis
Why would you camp outside a store for it, it's not like there is going to be a shortage of them, just like there wasn't with the first one.
Go in at a sensible time on day of release, and have yourself a decent kip the night before.

@anyone
I have had an O2 contract for about 13 or 14 months. Didn't fancy the first iPhone because of price but love this. Want to upgrade but anyone know if I can in July. I enquired about this with the last iPhone and they said I could upgrade and break out of my contract as long as I had started a contract before last september. From the o2 website it just says they will give me a call when I can upgrade. Is this July or October or whenever my contract is up

I'm really disappointed with new iPhone because of the camera. I was expecting a 3 or 5 MP camera with AF, flash(Xenon or LEDs) and VGA video recording!
Posted by themarques
Is the iphone even been released in Bosnia & Herzegovina?
Posted by haynesycop
It isn't listed here;
Posted by SaLiH
No it hasn't been released in Bosnia & Herzegovina officially, but it is available on the black market since it was released! I expect the same thing will happen with 3G iPhone!

Seems like the 3G iPhone isn't so cheap after all:
This morning we're getting a first look at unsubsidized prices for the iPhone 3G in Europe. Vodafone Italy has set an out-of-contract price for the iPhone 3G at 499/€569 ($773/$881) for the 8GB/16GB models, respectively. Subscription rates have not yet been announced. While steep, those prices are actually smartphone-reasonable in Italy (and around Europe) where an HTC Touch Cruise with its WiFi, tri-band HSDPA data, GPS, and touchscreen sells for €549. Capisce?

Did people really expect it to be the same price without a contract, as it is with one?
Since when were sim free phones the same price as they are on a contract, erm..... never.
Posted by masseur
actually, the 1st gen iPhone was the same price with or without a contract
Posted by mswallis
Yeah if you hacked it, I mean officially.
Posted by masseur
no, what I mean is that the 1st gen iPhone was not subsidised.
any other phone, if you don't take a contract you pay one price for the handset and if you do take a contract you pay a cheaper price for the handset
with iPhone 1st gen the actual handset was the same price whether you took a contract or not
so its not unreasonable for people to think it would be the same price now for the 2nd gen with or without a contract, though clearly that would be too good to be true

True, but my point is unless you hacked the iPhone, buying it without a contract was useless as it was not a sim free device for you to do with as you pleased, yes everyone could buy it for the same price but until you activated it, it was basically an expensive paper weight, o2 sold it to you on the basis you were going to take the contract out, there was no official sim free iPhone, like it appears there will be with the new one.

The exception was Belgium which had to sell it sim free, as the law there does not allow sim locking
anyway, this sim free price does seem a bit steep but if it really is going to available sim free, I wonder if more retailers will be able sell it such that we see some pricing competition like we do with other handsets
Posted by mswallis
I don't think it's too bad really, from those prices the 16GB version is around £440, which is only (I use the term only loosely there
However to use all the functionality in the phone you're going to need a contract sim to put in it with a good data tariff etc, probably making it as expensive if not more than just getting it with an official contract anyway. You could go with your own PAYG provider but imagine the data charges.

well, thats still £100 more than the current unsubsidised 16gb iPhone and when you look at other sim free phone in that price bracket the iPhone no longer seems quite so attractive (not that it would neccessarily stop me getting one though!)
fortunately I do have a great non contract bundle with t-mobile, its a sim only deal with web'n'walk pro (2gb fair use/month) for £15/month
Posted by mswallis
True, but the old unsubsidised 16gb iPhone is not sim-free unless you hack it, like I said it was sold on the promise you are taking out the contract.
I know you keep saying the old iPhones were unsubsidised, but they didn't sell them unsubsidised for people to unlock them themselves and use another network, although unsubsidised they were still sold for people to use with a contract on the O2 network on an O2 iPhone tariff.
Therefore these actual sim free models need some form of mark-up as there is obviously no money to come in after the device is sold.

Hi Masseur,
Having looked into this last time the Office of Fair trading stated that 02 won the right to sell the iPhone exclusively and therefore they could sell it for what they wanted. It was not covered by monopolies or fair trade legislation in any way at all.

I just can figure why they dont just sell it on contract / payg / simfree like all other phones.
They would sell bucket loads simfree, seems very strange to me, and i for one won't be giving my 1st gen iPhone up until i know i can it it working with my current o2 contract.

apparently Vodafone here will be offering it on both contract and pre-paid (payg)

But not VodafoneNZ who have confirmed that the phone will be on-contract only.

What are the chances of iphone 3g supporting SMS delivery reports?
Posted by masseur
I already get delivery reports when I want them. I just prefix the message with the GSM standard code of *0#

Really? I didnt realise that was possible. So you basically edit the number before sending? And does the report come through as a seperate SMS or can you go to the message to check the status?
You sir are a gent!!!
Thanks

no, not the number, you prefix the message text with *0# and yes, you get a separate message with the delivery report

Does anyone know if it would be possible to have a "Today" screen on the new iPhone? Such as that on TytnII, N95 or other business mobiles?

Also, to emphasise this point, this works on any O2 contract phone, and so long as you start the message with *0# (ie: *0# hi guys...) then the *0# will not appear on the other persons message.

I have seen an app which acts this way but cant remember what it was called. No doubt something like that will be available when the app store opens.

I read on the net the boss of Vodafone stating they are not getting the iphone(as yet) is what he said. Though would be good.

There are two that I know of: Intelliscreen & iToday. Intelliscreen seems to be more popular.

So instead of typing ´how u doin?´, u type ´*0# how you doin?' ? Is this correct? And u receive a separate notification?
Posted by bavlondon2
does there need to be a space after those characters of the message should start immediatley after? Or does either way work?
