guys what are ur thoughts on the crackuluos app? i think its a step too far
Posted by RyaN
yeah definitely, cracking apps and making it easy to crack them right on your iPhone is a step too far imo too
Posted by Boinng
I'm disgusted at this crackulous thing, I honestly hope the developer (who's trying to charge for this app and complaining already that others are pirating him) gets thoroughly punished for it, and that Apple can flip a kill switch somewhere to block it forever.
The Appstore is a wonderful thing, offering brilliant value, and the only reason it works is the DRM which ensures that everyone has to pay, and pay through the Appstore, if they want a certain app. That's what keeps prices down, and the money rolling in for developers, to give them the incentive to produce great stuff. As soon as you break the DRM, you break the principle behind the appstore, that incentive goes and the economies of scale fall away, so we all end up paying more for less apps (or more likely switching to cracked apps ourselves) and the whole ecosystem dies on its arse.
I really couldn't wish more bad luck on the idiot who coded this, or any of the script kiddie friends that egged him on.
Posted by voda_jon
i too am against this app... part of the pirating not getting too big is that most of the time it isnt easy to crack the apps or find somewhere hosting them. but this app not only makes it easy but also advertises a huge cracked app store which is bad news for the developers...
I have my fingers crossed that the android market doesnt have something similiar happen once paid for apps make an appearance!
Try a demo... read a review... if u like it.... BUY IT!

I know the iphone 3G has louder speakers than 2G, but if jailbreaked the 2G can't have the same loudness thank to an app or trick??
Used 2G iphones are much cheaper than 3G that's why I ask

Anyone downloaded the new Clear Cam app from Cydia yet? Claims to sharpen up images to more than 2x the original quality i.e. 4 megapixel by taking multiple shots at the same time, then stitching the images together.
Dunno though... gave it a quick testing (taking a pic of my tea mug lol) and then used Snapture to take a pic but cant really tell much difference on the screen itself (plus iPhone doesnt take close-up shots very well anyway)
Gonna give this a proper test out later and see if it lives up to the claims.

Ive noticed there are a few radio apps avaiable. Has anyone seen any for BBC Radio Five Live?
Posted by RyaN
How about last.fm? Does that pick up the live feeds?
Posted by Boinng
Wunder Radio gets all the BBC stations, and about 30,000 others around the world - seems to work well. Costs something like £3.49 though.
Posted by RyaN
If anyone is using biteSMS, and want to continue using it for free, dont update it in Cydia with todays update as they're now licencing it. However, it's now got the QuickReply function (which i'm yet to test out - no-one's text me today
I'll probably end up buying this as i've always liked it. I did switch back to using the stock sms.app in conjuction with MySMS's quickreply function (quick reply is just the absolute donkeys bits) I much prefer the simple interface of biteSMS as it looks almost identical to the stock, so this update now perfects this app for me

Pocket Tunes is awesome for radio feeds, and they're support is so great too!
ClearCam's alright, have yet to test it properly though.

I still haven't updated to the new fw. How are you all finding it?

Fine for me - I updated as soon as it was out (i haven't jailbroken) and I don't think I've managed to crash safari since.
Posted by whentheleveebreaks
Yeah same here, though since 2.2 safari hasnt crash once, overall everything does seem much more stable since the new update.
Posted by RyaN
Most of these minor firmware updates are such a placebo. Makes 'you' think that the phone somehow is a bit quicker than it was before. All it is is the fresh restore/install making it seem to run a bit quicker. I really dont think this firmware (2.2.1) was for anything other than blocking the yellowsn0w unlock... they just made a slight tweak with the email picture saving issue.
My safari still crashes on the odd occasion when it decides it's run out of memory trying to load all the pics on a webpage. Really seems to be a recurring issue that they have yet to sort out. A lot of pages still load with some pictures displaying a blue quesiton mark instead.
Imo, the Safari.app could do with an overhaul
Posted by Boinng
2.2.1 definitely fixed some Safari issues for me. I was still getting the odd crash on 2.2 (especially on T.U.A.W - the unnofficial Apple weblog, ironically) sometimes locking up the whole phone, but no such issues with 2.2.1.
I'm sure the biggest motive for the patch was to break yellowsnow et al, but that suits me - if it means they get these little bug fixes out quicker then more power to the jailbreaker's elbow.
I'm still enjoying the phone "as Apple intended" without any JB - maybe once its clear that Apple are done tweaking and have moved onto the next model, I might turn to the dark side.
Posted by ares
yeah, safari still crashes...when some site keeps doing it, i end up using the jb browser alternative, my fox...from experience, it does not crash has much
Posted by whentheleveebreaks
I use mine as standard, did have it jailbreaked for a bit but i found it gave me nothing extra.
Posted by RyaN
@ares Hmm interesting. Completely forgot about that alt. browser. Might give it another butchers. Cheers.
@Boinng Just come to the dark side now - even if only for a bit like @whentheleveebreaks did - then you can see whether theres anything that you'd personally benefit from it
Posted by ares
to say jailbreak does not give anything extra, one must be the complete opposite of a power user lol...i think i would not be able to use the iphone for long if it was not jailbroken...
Posted by masseur
actually, I haven't kept up with jailbreaking since getting the 3g. I jailbroke and unlocked my 2g first day I got it, and my daughters too...
is there now a simple and safe way to jailbreak the 3g with 2.2.1 on windows vista?
Posted by RyaN
Yeah it's mega easy and straight forward. Showed my not-so-tech-savvy mate how to do it once (he has a Vista lappy) and he's been fine with it ever since.
Just need to run it through a program called QuickPwn, get it from the official source over at blog.iphone-dev.org
Posted by masseur
I thought this QuickPwn only ran on Mac?
oh, ok then. that'll be my next thing to do then...
ta
Posted by RyaN
Nah, thats Pwnage Tool that is Mac only. I think there is a Mac version of QuickPwn, but not too sure.
Give it a blast and come over to the dark side!
What's made you change your mind??
Posted by masseur
been wanting to do it for a while to try some of the stuff you lot are on about, and also my daughter still loves her 16gb 2g with all the community stuff. I tried the other week to update it from 1.4 to 2.2 for the app shop etc and she had zero interest
Posted by RyaN
Cool. You'll love it... you've done well holding back til now to do it, all credit to the App Store there eh.
My guess is your daughter didnt like the transition between the old Installer and the new Cydia... Have you restored it back to 1.4 for her now?
Posted by masseur
I hadn't changed it at all, its still the original installer
she 17 and though she can see the stuff in the app shop on itunes, she's happy with what she has
Posted by RyaN
Oh i see, thought you meant you actually updated it for her and then she wasnt interested. I guess as the saying goes, if it aint broke - dont fix it, shes happy with the way she has it now..customised etc.
My g/f is now almost as bad as me when it comes to iPhone related modding.... she's basically decided that my iPod touch is now hers and has customised the hell out of it! Another saying for that one - If you cant beat em - join em
Posted by masseur
yay! it was very easy... wish I'd taken the time sooner
question though, on firmware upgrade through iTunes, I assume its lost?
Posted by RyaN
Told ya it was easy!
Yeah, if you update firmware through iTunes you'll lose the jailbreak. Although I found last time I just used 'update' in iTunes and then QuickPwn'd, all my Cydia apps and settings remained. If you restore then you'll completely lose everything

I don't believe in power users anymore - I'm constantly told a "power user" wouldn't touch the iPhone at all with or without jailbreak, so I guess we're all just plain old users Ares.
With my unbroken iPhone I blog, FTP, work on spreadsheets, carry files around, twitter, manage my work email and Exchange tasks, the list goes on and on - I'm probably more productive on the iPhone than I ever was on my Windows Mobile or UIQ phones. If I don't get to wear the power user badge because I can't SMS in landscape mode then so be it!

Ryan, aptbackup works marvelously to recover Cydia apps after a firmware uprgade and re-jailbreak
Boinng, what about MMS, copy+paste, today screen with rss, weather, calendar events, etc, on lockscreen, multitasking (IM apps on backgound), offline maps, etc...i surely would miss all this stuff

MMS I have with an Appstore app (I think it's UK only though). Calendar events, weather etc is only ever a click away - it's all so quick to get at that stuff, I don't really feel the need to collect it all together in one screen, but that's a personal thing I guess. The same goes for multitasking - I can switch apps in seconds and I don't want to swap any of that speed for stuff hanging on in memory, so it doesn't interest me - I must have spent more time closing down apps in the task managers of my old UIQ and WM phones than I actually spent using half of them, the Apple approach makes perfect sense to me. Out of your list I guess offline maps would be nice, but I'm guessing we're still not talking about TomTom so only of limited use over and above Gmaps. Copy and paste - yeah, I'd like that, but as I understand it the jailbroken version isn't universal or without its downsides, so I live without it for now. If Apple never implement it before they give up on this iteration and move onto the iPhone 3, then maybe I'll jailbreak just for that later.
The point is, right now I like being able to update with impunity, and find official ways of doing what I want to do in the Appstore, without any worries about slowdowns or software clashes or any of the other junk that starts to creep in when things get hacked and subverted by well meaning third parties. I've been there and done that with WinMo, mostly because without it WinMo sucked - the iPhone's different and I like it that way.

@ares AptBackup didnt work for me last time i tried, i think it may only work if you do a full restore. Could be wrong though. I do know that after i just 'updated' in iTunes that my 'Themes.xxxx' folder remained, and all of the settings for Cydia apps too (categories too) the only thing that was lost was the information sorted within Cydia.app like it didnt have showing up as installed in the 'Packages' section.
@Boinng At the end of the day jailbreaking comes down to personal preference. Personally i couldn't do without three main things - Intelliscreen, biteSMS (or any other SMS app) and Themes. I find the most enjoyment i get out of my iPhone is customising it exactly how i want it, and swapping over themes every few days when i get bored to keep it looking fresh. But again, i think i recall you saying before about how you love the simplistic design/layout of the stock apple theme which is fair enough. Each to their own.
I know I always end up rambling on about Intelliscreen, but i really couldn't do without it now. Being able to read my 5 favourite RSS feeds, read emails and texts, see the weeks weather forecast, Calendar updates, IntelliDial to call contacts in my favourites list and all that without needing to unlock my phone is pure convenience bliss
Posted by NoKia
yeah its a personal preference thing,
personally i wouldnt give up all thats and ssbsettings for anything, i cant even imagine having to exit an app or to go thru 3-4 menu steps just to toggle bluetooth or wifi on and off
if that were the only option available i would still jailbreak for it
Posted by ares
i was forgeting SBSSettings...frankly...if you want to have a decent battery life, SBSsettings is a must...to be able to QUICKLY turn off bluetooth, wifi, 3g, EDGE, GPS, is a must-have function...it would be a nightmare to do it the normal way, through the settings menu
RyaN, i did make a full backup through itunes, after running Aptbackup, imeddiately before i upgraded to 2.2.1...and it worked fine, i got all my cydia apps back in an instant

I see i see i see.... Personally i've held back on upgrading to 2.2.1 cos I didnt think it'd be worth the hassle. Have you noticed any particular difference in the new firmware?
Does AptBackup restore everything in your themes folder? Like stuff that hasnt been installed via Cydia, or would i have to back that up separately?
Also does AptBackup restore everything within the list of installed 'Packages' within Cydia, so it'll pick up updates etc? Cos last time i did it, even though my packages remained installed, i had to go through Cydia installing stuff again just so it 'knew' that i had it installed.
Posted by ares
yes, it restores everything, including themes....
regarding 2.2.1...i´m not sure...well, safari seems a bit more stable...not much more
Posted by masseur
installed intelliscreen but it is constantly failing to get the registration code from their servers. I'm getting error 920 and their FAQ says to uninstall and reinstall which I've done twice but still no joy
waiting for an email from them now but if one of you have had this problem and solved it then please let me know how
Posted by RyaN
I take it you are trying to retrieve it via wi-fi, as it cant retrieve over 3G. Is it bought and paid for, or are you just trying to retrieve a demo license?
edit: Also trying rebooting between uninstalling and reinstalling, see if that works
