How secure is a hacked iPhone?

Is there any reason why a hacked iPhone resulting in the owner's details being stolen, card details, emails, etc hasn't happened yet?

Posted by SloopJohnB
By hacked iphone u mean ījailbroken/unlockedī iphone? No, never heard of any stolen personal info. The tools (quickpwn and pwnage tool) to hack the iphone run locally on your PC/MAC, plus they donīt require any info from the user.

Posted by londonlad123
I don't mean data stolen from the pc, I mean data stolen from the iPhone that have jailbroken apps installed. Can I carry on using Internet banking without any problems?

Posted by rule_breaker
Yes you can, well at least I do, Its not a concern for me.

hi guys

does anyone have any experince with the apple bluetooth headset?

Posted by haynesycop
I have one, have hardly used it though, what are you wanting to know about it?

Posted by NoKia
i just wanted to know how reliable it is? battery life, range, comparison with other headsets things like that, is it worth the extra money

Posted by haynesycop
Well i've not really used it a huge amount to be honest, if i get a chance i'll check it out over the holidays and post a little review but the price has gone down alot since it first came out there Ģ58 now i may even sell you mine if you want it as i never use it.

cheers, a review will be nice

Hi all i am thinking of buying an iphone and have just a couple of questions.

If using a turbo sim. do you have full compatability?

Is the safari browser data hungry? as i am planning on using this on vodafone with only a 500mb add on and i dont have wifi access.

is having a fast home internet package a must as i am only using mobile broadband which is nowhere near as fast as it should be in my area?

Do you have to have purchased music from itunes in order for it to work on the iphone?

will probably think of some more questions but these can get me going. thanks for your help!

Hi

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by Turbo SIM but if you talking of HSDPA reception, then yes the iPhone is compatible. I have tested my iPhone 3G at over 1.7 Mbps but generally my SE V640 has faster download speeds in the same areas by 30%.

Yes the iPhone 3G is data hungry. I go thru my 256 MB allowance in about 14 days leaving me high and dry for the rest of the month. When you realize that Safari doesn't store webpages therefore reloading a page when you press the back key, plus mistakes from touching the wrong hyperlink, plus pages designed for the iPhone are smaller - 1 esato webpage = 3 Mobile esato pages, plus downloading apps and constant updates, plus GPS via 3G, it's easy to see were it all goes.

I have now gone back to Mobile Broadband after trying ( and failing ) to survive exclusively on the iPhone plus wifi at Uni and yes, you do need a fast connection at home. Why? Because of the constant Internet access needed by iTunes for iStore and AppStore and for downloading iPhone software updates. Update 2.1 was an eyewatering 238MB download and 2.2 (which I haven't done yet) is a painful 243MB behemoth. Expect a firmware update that size every two months at the current rate. Apps on the iPhone are great but if you get too many you'll spend all your time and bandwidth downloading updates for them too. Factor in podcasts and you'll understand why I've opted for the 3GB data plan not the 1GB plan I used to get by on okay.

You don't have to buy music from apple, but I found it easier to re-encode all my mp3 files to 128kbps AAC using iTunes which took an entire weekend. I now have 68 albums, 57 handycam videos, 20-something Apps and 400+ photos on my 8GB iPhone with heaps of room to spare.

Woo! They showcased the unlock, hopefully by the time I come back from Holidays it will be ready and bug free!

thanks for all the advise mate. really helpfull. now only have a few questions left.

is there a data/gprs counter or monitor on the iphone or an app which does this available through the app store.

jailbreaking:
is this legal?
is it a straightforward process?
is this just like hacking a phone?
what are the main benefits over a standard iphone?

thanks for info on further questions. i should be getting my iphone shortly. had to pay for it via paypal echeque which is taking a lifetime to clear and to be honest i am quite scared incase i am being scammed. dont think i have the nerves to buy anything big through ebay after this LOL

@frank

The iPhone does have a data counter but you must remember to reset it manually so I don't bother with it. I keep track of my daily data use on the VodafoneNZ website. I haven't looked for an App but there must be one because I bought a very good fuel economy tracking App called Gashog which wouldn't be that different in principle.

I think Apple envisaged the iPhone being used with Urban/Corporate/Home wifi and unlimited data plans but unlimited isn't in Vodafone Group's vocabulary so we'll always be caught out somewhere along the way.

I haven't jailbroken yet nor have I debranded any of my SE handsets - V800, V630, V640. I value my warranty and don't wish to void it.

The iPhone is beautifully built and awesome at times while intenseely frustrating at others. It suits Mac users best and users of Microsoft software also but if like me you prefer third party software such as Opera browser and MPE then it's a bit handicapped. If Opera release a browser for the iPhone then I'd jailbreak. I don't like safari much.

Well I now have my new iPhone and must admit I am enjoying it so far. Thankfully it has 2.1 firmware so the unlock will be possible. Is this unlock process ready for general us and some advice about jailbraking would be appreciated?

The unlocks out and it actually requires you to update to 2.2 for the newer baseband...

Just unlocked my White 16GB iPhone 3G using yellowsn0w

Nice one scottt!
Im thinking of getting a iPhone and I have on my orange contract, the websave thing that orange introduced and then quickly scrapped, but theyve never taken it off my account!
Say if I was just using it for browsing, not all the time like maybe one or twice a day for 10 min would that last me for the month?
I read the post at the top of the page btw

Well still loving my iPhone which is now jailbroken. Haven't bothered unlocking yet as I am enjoying the free data which comes with the path sim. I have a few more questions to ask however.
Which is generally considered better bitesms or realsms?
Are cydia and installer basically the same thing? If not what are the major differences?
Ok and the speakers onthe iPhone. It seems to me that only one of the grills has any nose coming out. This. Is most notable when playing hero of Sparta and my right hand presses against the speaker and no sound escapes. Is the other grill meant to be just as loud or is it effectivly a tweeter of sorts)
Finally is there an ebook reader out there that can take mobipocket books as I know as sourse where I can get them free?
Thanks in advance for answering my questions?

You could try Stanza from the apple store... it also has a good library of free classic ebooks to download...

To answer some of your questions...

biteSMS or iRealSMS, it really comes down to preference. iRealSMS gives more of an old school feel with 'Inbox' 'Outbox' 'Sent Items' etc. Both offer landscape typing, forwarding and a character limit indicator. I personally use biteSMS cos i like the feel and UI of the stock text app, and it's just an extension of that with more features.

Cydia and Installer? Cydia everytime. Dont bother with installer. Cydia owns now like Installer owned on the older, pre 2.0, firmwares.

Regarding the speaker situation, it's just a mono speaker, and the other 'grill' on the opposite side is the microphone. IMO the speaker is surprising loud considering it comes out of a tiny section!

Hope that helps

Posted by NoKia
actually Ryan irealsms has the ability to do both the traditional sms veiw and you can also switch it to the conversation view identical to the stock apple sms, you also get a quick reply feature that means that if u are in another another app you dont need to close it to reply to a sms, u just get a popup keyboard and edit box, the only advantage of Bitesms is that it is free

Stanza supports most formats of ebooks and copying books from pc to iphone is very easy over wifi

Oh lol ok... think i was getting confused thinking that 'MySMS' was the only SMS app able to switch between new and traditional view. And yeah i really like that quick reply feature, very very handy to be able to reply to a message whilst in another app.

Can i ask you something....how well does iRealSMS integrate with Intelliscreen? Any conflicts or anything?

Posted by NoKia
i am not quite sure because i dont have intelliscreen anymore, i dont recall any problems with it when i did have it tho

Posted by RyaN
Oh ok cool. Quite tempted to check it out again after you reminded me about that quick reply feature. Can get a bit annoying having to launch the SMS app everytime and waiting for it to load etc. Cheers

ps not having Intelliscreen installed is criminal

Posted by NoKia
lol ...i know i will get back to installing it, i just went through a phase of theme changing and clearing up

Posted by RyaN
You must! It's the best app ever

What theme/setup you using atm... (screenies?)

Posted by NoKia
currently using smoog theme

whcih one are u using now?

Posted by frank2345babies
ok thanks for all the advice think i will go for realsms.
ok and how do i actually remove installer. i dont really use it anyway as all my sources are in cydia.
and also with regard to the ebook transfer over wifi. i assume you mean the ssh method or whatever. i will have to use the usb method as dont have wifi. but i have been a bit hesitant to do this as i am having to learn alot fast after moving from s60

Posted by RyaN
@NoKia Nice! That Smoog theme looks top. I've heard of it before, just never seen it. This is my current theme... my mate completely copied it off me as well as the layout so now i'm gonna have to find another damn theme to use lol It's called A8stract NTW...

@Frankie

You can remove it manually if you SSH in, or using another method like iCommander if you dont have wifi, and navigate to the Applications folder and delete the Installer.app folder, but you may as well just use 'poof' to hide it off your springboard

Posted by NoKia
that looks really cool Ryan, trying to figure out what app the burning hob is though
i like the clock tab

Posted by RyaN
Yeah it's a bit poop that icon, it's for pictures believe it or not. Not quite sure what the creator was thinking when making that icon! Need to hunt down a better one really.

Have icons for mostly all of my apps which is pretty sweet, and also contained in the UIImages folder within the theme is a mask.png and overlay.png so that every App Store app i download automatically gets a matching icon created.

You seen that mod so that you can have a 5 column sprinboard? Supposedly it's safest with 2.2fw, but it hasnt been officially released yet and is still being tested macthemes2.net

This would be sweet with the Abeo theme with the mini-icons!

Posted by NoKia
ok, yeah u need to get another one!

really cool thing that overlay.png stuff, smoog had one in there as well, so everything kinda stays uniform

never heard of that 5 row thing, very interesting
another thing i saw on another forum that was really exciting was that bluesnow project, they are on track to crack the bluetooth restrictions

Posted by RyaN
Yeah i reckon every theme creator should create those overlay masks cos it certainly helps with all the app store icons.

Gonna give the 5 column SB a go later. I really love the Abeo theme with the nano sized icons, and it'll be perfect for that. Might check out Smoog too cos those icons look beautiful.

Yeah i read about the bluetooth project a couple of month back, that would be a massive thing to be able to hack, so many people want it. I wonder if it's advanced any further recently?

Posted by NoKia
yeah 5 icons will look really cool on that theme, i even kinda like it with normal sized icons

they have only got as far as displaying the Mac addresses of bluetooth devices within range of the iphone, not much but its a great step forward

Posted by NoKia
i just stumbled onto an MMS application in the appstore? they kept that really clever

Posted by RyaN
Well it's a step in the right direction. They'll probably have it sussed by the time Apple decide to release an iPhone with proper bluetooth lol

Hmm i've heard of an MMS capable app on the app store before. Whats it called? If it's the one im thinking of it doesnt work very well and just gives an email link to the recipient

Posted by NoKia
this was released 2 days ago called MMS photo messaging, i just tested it and it worked first time round to receive an MMS!
to send it costs about 38p a message, you have to buy credits from within the app to send tho, but receiving is complete free

Posted by RyaN
Ah awesome! Not the one i was thinking of then

Pfff 38p per msg is pretty hefty though. I could only ever get SwirlyMMS to send and not receive, so i guess i could use Swirly to send and this to receive. Gonna have a butchers at it

Posted by RyaN
Had a mess around with the five column springboard last night. It was getting late and then i saw another customised theme i liked the look of over on macthemes2 and so I got rid of it... And now i'm in limbo over what theme i wanna stick to!! aghhh

Posted by NoKia
that looks cool, i am really tempted now

but i promised myself that i would stay with this current for at least a month!

Posted by RyaN
I know, it's so easy to get tempted by other themes once you start looking.

I'm really not sure which one to stick with now. I like Abeo, however there is another 'Nano icon' theme called Pump (not on Cydia yet) that looks really decent. I'm currently using the Smoog theme (after you tempted me with your screenshot!) as i tried Gradience v3 but just didnt like the icons much - too square.

Just sold my iphone 2G and got a 3G yesterday, loving it!!

Posted by Neo-Tech
Nice to hear John, unlocked my 3G, turns out Orange 2G doesn't work.

Posted by RyaN
@SloopJohnB

Nice, congrats on your new purchase! Which did you go for, 8 or 16gb black/white? Did you get it on upgrade or payasyougo?

Posted by RyaN
@NoKia

Tested out iRealSMS this weekend. Really like it, the quickreply function is amazing. It just doesnt work well with Intelliscreen, or even the hook when you receive an SMS is a bit weird and either doesnt display a new SMS badge on the icon, or cant get rid of the badge. Or the icon on the status bar doesnt go away.

Such a shame cos i really really like that quick reply function, it's probably one of the best ideas for the iPhone i've come across.

So back to biteSMS for me i guess

Btw what version of iRealSMS you running? Mine is 2.0.6

Posted by NoKia
yeah thats the same version i have, strangely i dont have any problem with sms notifcation on the icon, the only issue i get is that sometimes the status bar notification wont go until u go back and check a message, becuase t reads the delivery report as well

Are Apple gonna do a iPhone with a higher res camera and intergrate MMS into the next softwear? I really love my iPod touch its a clever piece of kit and its making me want one of these phones btw can I change themes on my iPod? :?

Posted by RyaN
Hi Missy

Yeah i would've thought the next iPhone would have a least a 3.2mpx cam, and most certainly MMS. There's that MMS app in the App Store atm that links up with your O2 account, so it's got to be easy enough for Apple to do it.

Regarding themes, it depends on which generation Touch you have. 1st you can, 2nd you can't (yet)

Posted by Neo-Tech
Keep checking the Chronic Dev Blog for updates. I've modded my iPhone to hell, carrier logos and everything. I'll post screenies later.

Posted by Miss UK
I wonder when Apple will launch 3rd Gen iPhone then next yr I was sceptical bout them but since ive got my Touch I love the way it downloads navigates etc! My iPods a 2nd Gen 1 btw hope themes will come anyway
