there is an unofficial way in asia. they desolder the baseband chip and reprogram it and then resolder it back on. this unlocks the handset but once you update and it writes the baseband it is relocked again.
costs about $100 to get it done.
Really? Crikey. So that could explain Scouser75's predicament - his phone's been physically modded!
It all seems like a lot of hassle...
Posted by RyaN
I doubt it as his iPhone was physically replaced by Apple in Italy as he had to send the first one he got back to them due to a fault....
Posted by scouser_75
Yup. As Ryan confirmed, mine is officially replaced by Sata in Italy. So no dodgy backstreet unlocking!!
I've checked the serial code and imei number and these both show that the phone is Italian. BUT the problem is that the Model Code says the phone is an AT&T USA phone. And here-in is where people have been havin problems. The 2.2 update recognises the phone as an unlocked USA phone and so locks it up.
I've contacted a very nice lady at apple who's looking into the matter. And is gonna get back to me next week.

cheers Ryan, that does look cool but i think it will take up too much space on my springboard
hey did you notice that intelliscreen 2.32 popped up on the hackulus source?
Posted by RyaN
lol yeah i did notice it... i've already purchased a license for it though
Got myself the Incase Slider today in matte black... Exactly what i wanted and provides more coverage than my other Contour flick. Got a lovely feel to it too

Great, my Cydia's stopped working, another restore.
Just to make things clearer for you guys:
iPhone 2G
Can be unlocked unofficially and will always be unlockable, no matter what. If you do upgrade your baseband in this iPhone, you can always downgrade. But remember, this iPhone will never be able to be unlocked offically.
iPhone 3G
Can be officially unlocked but not unofficially, not yet anyways. In the newer firmwares, 2.2 onwards Apple have updated the baseband so you can't use TurboSIMS and stuff like that, the only solution is to get a custom IPSW or stay at 2.1. If you are officially unlocked, as in from when you took it out of the box, you can upgrade to any firmware as you wish, even if it upgrades the baseband.

Regarding the iPhone 3G quote - Neo-Tech you're almost correct. But apparently, if you bought a Officially Unlocked 3G handset BUT it has a Model Code from a country where the handset is locked you might be in trouble if you update to 2.2.
The reason being that when updating the handset will assume that you are trying to update an unofficially unlocked handset and therefore mess up the baseband.
I'm going to try updating my official unlocked italian iphone with a USA Model Number so will confirm if this is true or not. Apple have assured me that this will not lock up the phone. But if it does they will unlock it for me again!!!
Wish me luck folks

Lads, I finally plucked up the b4lls and went and done the software update.........
And [with a sigh of relief] it all went swimmingly
So far no problems at all (other than losing 3G signal once in a while!).
The phone didn't lock up in anyway. All my data, music, contacts etc was all still there post update.
I haven't had a chance to play about with the new features yet - but as there aren't that many shouldn't be playing about too much.
If any problems will keep you updated.
A very relieved man

phew, good work. At least it now puts your mind at rest for any future update.
Had a slight 'mare applying the Power Support Crystal film today... just couldn't get it aligned perfectly. I say perfectly because my Incase Slider was pushing up the protector where it was slightly off (i think i recall @Nokia or @scouser_75 talking about this) .... So, i wasted one of the films trying to reapply it and ended up screwing it up.
The second one I put on is perfectly aligned, however... a tiny tiny hair snuck underneath but it's in the top right hand corner so I can live with that lol

I don't know whether to get the Power Support Crystal or Anti-Glare...

Can anyone recommend some good earphones for the iphone? Pref the ones that sit in your ear, and dont want to spend more than say £20-30. Someone told me skull candy ones were good once...

Not sure about skull candy headphones, but if you're looking for some good in-ear ones then i can recommend a couple for you.
Goldring G200's on play.com for £17.99..RRP is usually £40. Bought a pair yesterday...so hopefully they are still at that price.
I personally use a set of Sennheiser CX500's that i got off Amazon Marketplace for around £38 inc del. Really good little headphones, usually retail around £50... but be careful with buying Senn's of Marketplace or eBay though as there are lots of fakes around.
The Senn CX300's are also a good bet too for around £15
There were also Shure E110's on play.com yesterday for £17.99 but they're no longer at that price.

That's where your going wrong. Your saying it's offically unlocked and it is but then your also saying it's updating a unoffically unlocked handset when it's offically unlocked. Remember, if you are offically unlocked, no matter what happens you'll stay unlocked, that simple!
Look, it even worked, yay, xD.

Strange hey!
I was looking over on the Apple Forum and so many people have had the problem of their handset being locked up because the Model Code was not from the country they bought their "officially unlocked" handset from. One example was of a bloke who bought his, like mine, from Italy off Vodafone. But when he went and updated to 2.2 BANG! it got locked up. The same happened to another guy who bought his from Australia.
But then, the flip side to all these stories is that myself, along with others, have managed to update to 2.2.
I guess it's all a bit of a gamble.

I've just bought an Officially Australian unlocked version and it should arrive tomorrow. Will it lock itself I try to update to firmware v2.2?
Will I need to activate this via Itunes? ANy pointers to websites that can guide me through set up for an Australian Iphone in the UK would be very much appreciated.
Cheers

@ Superluminova - iPlayer's fine for me too, watched Screenwipe on it this morning. What problem are you having exactly?
Posted by masseur
I just received a text from O2 saying that they have released an app called the O2 festive Kit.
Its free in the app store
You get a set of bells that ring when you shake the iphone, a picture of the o2 with snow and music, and a mistletoe with a button to making a smooooching sound... quite tacky really

Hello,
I just can't get any tv / radio shows to play.
Posted by Boinng
That's odd - could it be a problem with your wifi/broadband? Who's your connection with? Are you getting as far as the "play" icon appearing on the iplayer page, pressing that and then nothing downloading, or are you getting some sort of error or message before then?
I remember when I got my iPhone back in October I was seeing a lot of "this programme is unavailable" messages and thought something was broken, but it appeared to be a problem at the BBC's end and just fixed itself over the next week or so. No real problems since.
If it's going through the motions and just not downloading the video, it's possible that your broadband supplier is throttling/blocking the connection in some way, and it might be worth raising with them.
@ Masseur - I downloaded that this morning, and yes it is very tacky and cheesy, festive though! I thought some of the reviews were a bit mean considering it's just a fun freebie!
Posted by Superluminova
I just don't get the play icon anymore?

Hmm - have you tried the obvious, eg powering the phone on and off fully, in case it's a little bug or memory prob?

I'll answer this myself. Updated to v2.2 yesterday - after updating it asked me to click on a button requesting network settings - i was shitting myself thinking it'll get locked to 02 but i tried and it worked!!!! The screen said "You're Iphone is now offically unlocked"
I am now using it on Vodafone with no problems
Cheers - go ahead and update if you have an offically unlocked Iphone it will not lock itself again.
Hope this helps someone as I could find no resource on the net about this...

Well to fix the Cydia problem, I restored and I thank myself for restoring and not installing WinterBoard as it's much faster now. First time I pwned my phone was by a custom IPSW of TPB, and same for the second time.
@Anuj: Are you after free apps or paid apps?
Posted by scouser_75
Anuj, there are seriously loads of essential apps - all depending on what you're after.
To name my essentials:
News UK Lite - Loadsa news stuff - General, Sport, Tech etc
iFooty - footy scores and news
Mobile Files - lets you transfer documents to your phone - great if you have mobileme.
Easy Writer - lets you compose emails in landscape mode.
Tube Status - great if you use the underground everyday.
TV Plus - lets you record sky+ from where ever you are. No more missing match of the day or topgear
Surf Report - brilliant if you like surfing
Chess - need i say more!
Word Warp - a brill word game
BBC iPlayer - you just gotta save the internet link to your iPhone.
Posted by scouser_75
Guys, I have a Mobileme account and was wondering that if I added a "To Do" item within Mobile Me on my Mac, and added an alarm reminder, should this then also remind me on my phone?
I've tried adding a reminder, and it reminds me on my Mac but not on my iPhone 3G! Surely this defeats the purpose somewhat!!
Also, is there any way of adding a To Do entry on the actual phone? Again, I've tried but can't seem to work out a way! Surely this too has to be possible??? (EDIT: Just done some research, and NOPE. No way of adding an entry on the actual phone. It has to be done on the actual computer)!
I've even tried to work around this problem by adding "Notes" on the Mac AND adding an alarm reminder. But as before the alarm goes off on the Mac but not on the phone!!!
As I always say - Apple; 'tis a love hate relationship!!!!!!!!!!

Sorted out my Cydia crash problem in the end, just ran it through QuickPwn again and it completely sorted it out. Well pleased I didnt have to do a full restore

Right got a very strange problem here guys.
I'm running a Iphone 3G on 2.0.1 Unlocked with rebelsim and jailbroken with quickpwn.
Now it was working fine for a few days but now it isnt recognised when you plug anything in. If i plug it into my Mac nothing happens if i plug it in my Laptop nothing happens and if i plug it into the mains with the charger nothing happens. Though it does still charge, say its got 10% batt left i put it on charge then come back 3 hours later still says 10% but then i power off then on and its fully charged!
What do i do? The computer wont even recognise it when i try and put it in DFU mode
Posted by londonlad123
Been a while, to update to 2.2 how do you do it for an iphone 2g? Update officially to 2.2 using itunes then use quickpwn?

@scottt You might have a faulty dock connection, it happened to my Touch a while back. When it's connected try pushing and holding the cable upwards or downwards to see if it picks it up. Sounds like you might need to return it for repair/replacement
@londonlad Yep simple as that
Posted by londonlad123
Thanks Ryan.
I've updated to 2.2 and everything seemed to have went well but I cant make calls now.
Sorted, found out about those two bootloader files and unlocked for all networks.
The pwd software really should come with instructions or tell you the steps in advance rather than on the spot.

@scouser_75
You can click on the + icon and add a calendar entry with an alarm; that should be the same as adding a to do. Does that help?
Also, the entry you made on Mobile Me; was it a to do or a calendar event? iCal on the iPhone doesn't have the "to do" section, so if you want something to sync across the board, it needs to be a calendar entry. It's essentially the same thing, but with a different name.
Oh, another thing; Mobile Me syncs better if your Mac is running 10.5.6!

Guys is there a shorter way to turn on/off the bluetooth and wifi settings without going in to settings general etc etc??
Also is there no bleedin way to forward a text messsage???
This is irritating me but its still a fine phone

@Anuj Yes both of those things are available but only for jailbroken devices i'm afraid

Hi all
This thread is too long for search this, so I going to ask.
Is there a free way of unlock the iPhone 3G?
If not what is the cheapest way?
Thanks
Posted by RyaN
There is a 100% free way to unlock iPhone 3g, however it wont be released until 31st December. Have a butchers at http://blog.iphone-dev.org for more info, also there is a video of MuscleNerd that he did yesterday demoing the unlock to show that it works.
You must have the right baseband though, if you officially updated to 2.2 through itunes the baseband would've been upgraded and you won't be able to unlock using this method at this stage

Hi all i am thinking of buying an iphone and have just a couple of questions.
If using a turbo sim. do you have full compatability?
Is the safari browser data hungry? as i am planning on using this on vodafone with only a 500mb add on and i dont have wifi access.
is having a fast home internet package a must as i am only using mobile broadband which is nowhere near as fast as it should be in my area?
Do you have to have purchased music from itunes in order for it to work on the iphone?
will probably think of some more questions but these can get me going. thanks for your help!
Posted by SloopJohnB
U can transfer any kind of mp3/aac/mpg files to the iphone through itunes, they don´t need to ´come´ from the itunes store.
500mb seems enough to me for browsing, mail and etC, though in order to fully use the iphone u need wi-fi. To download apps through the app store on the iphone its good to have wi-fi or it will eat up your mbs really fast. In order to transfer files in and out of the iphone (ex: office files, pdf, palm docs, etc) u´ll need wi-fi too.
