yeah, its gonna take ages to arrange everything back to where its supposed to be, at least i remembered to sync my contacts and things before restoring
Posted by RyaN
I just couldnt be doing with restoring and potentially losing all my texts etc. Tis annoying. So i just 'updated' in itunes then run quickpwn.
Although my mate replaced his white 16gb iphone at the weekend (the whole back piece fell off!) and when he synced the new one all his old texts were there! I didnt think itunes synced all your texts? hmm.

No problems for me with the 2.2 upgrade (not jailbroken). I'd say it was definitely a worthwhile upgrade just for the improvements to Safari - I'm finding it *much* more stable now. Things seem slightly nippier in a few other places, there are some other good additions here and there, and basically I can't fault it at all. In theory, email fetching is more reliable now, and I've seen nothing to disprove that (although the problems there were always very intermittent).

Yep no safari crashes for me either yet *fingers crossed*
Tbh, no other noticable improvements in speed over 2.1, apart from atm it being a fresh install - things always run quicker after a freshy
One thing that i did notice (that is perhaps bugging me the more i think about it for some stupid reason!) There is no icon next to 'usage' in settings. Wasn't like this before. Anyone else got this?
Posted by NoKia
maybe he restored from a backup? becuase i know that backing up will save the text messages
and i didnt realise you could just update a jailbroken phone, i thought u could only restore

ah i see. That would prob be it then... didnt realise texts were saved in the backup. Cool, cheers
edit; Yup...can just click update and it'll sort it out. Then quickpwn to jailbreak. Obviously once you update in itunes you lose the jailbreak and all the jailbreak apps. Just meant i didnt have to sit there whilst all the stuff re-synced if a full restore was done

lol ...i wish i knew that before i clicked on restore

Oh well dude, at least you've got it all backed-up.
Let me know about the above screenshot i posted once you're done restoring

no problem

Obviously this is due to something you've changed/installed through jailbreaking, since it's quite different to my settings screen - on mine, "Usage" isn't shown there at all. To see Usage, you click on the "General" tab, and it's near the top of that screen.
None of the options under "General" have any icons, so "Usage" fits in fine there
Posted by RyaN
Ah yes... cheers Boinng. Indeed it shows up as an option on mine in 'General'. It's just on 2.1 it was the same, although it had an orange power icon.
And indeed you are right, it's something i had installed called Extended Preferences...which i've now turned off and it's disappeared

yep - solved. lol. Stupid Extended Prefs applied in Winterboard that i had no use for anyway!
Yeah i think they are smaller. And for apps that have long names the text is now seperated in the middle with '...' ie 'Star...Unleashed' or whatever.

hey just stumbled on a new feature in 2.2, you can take screenshots of the lockscreen, this wasnt possible in 2.1 was it?
Posted by RyaN
Cool, no you couldnt do that before!
Intelliscreen is awesome isnt it
Posted by NoKia
its great! thanks for the hookup
Posted by Neo-Tech
I'll be upgrading in the weekend probably, don't have time in weekdays, xD.
Oohhh...screenshots in lockscreen.cool.
I heard it's much faster on other forums as well so yeah I'm off to upgrade.

I do like 2.2 with the exception of the shorter address bar in the browser.
so far 3g reception on the move (i.e. in the train/bus) seems to be alot better and I haven't so far had the long pauses I used to get.
I really like to ability to download podcasts on the go but what is missing here is that the podcast tab in Itunes app doesn't have a tab which shows my subscribed podcasts. THAT would be really useful!
Posted by RyaN
Yeah mainly i just like to have the most up to date firmware to smooth out any potential reception problems. Anything that helps is a bonus. It's good that you've noticed it's holding signal better.
Does your turbo-sim work in the phone now you've updated?
Posted by masseur
I haven't actually tested that.
I'll give it a go tonight as I don't have it on me at the mo
Posted by RyaN
Cool it'd be interesting to know if it still works ok.
The only problem i've had thus far with 2.2, is not really an issue with the firmware itself, Intelliscreen is making mail.app crash when trying to load my GMail. It's a known issue with version 2.29 of Intelliscreen, which i think has been sorted in the update of Intelliscreen 2.30 today. It was a problem with the taskbar/statusbar notification icons. You just need to turn them off in IntelliAlerts for the time being.
@NoKia This may have affected you too so just a heads up
Posted by NoKia
yeah Ryan i just noticed this with my Yahoo mail
Posted by NoKia
another new cool feature is when u get a voicemail and u click on the phone icon it takes u straight to the voicemail menu as opposed to taking u to wherever you where the last time you closed the app
Posted by masseur
also, if you press the home button it takes you to the desktop where you launched the app you were in, but if you press it a second time it takes you to the first desktop page. I do like that too
all in all, not a bad update
Posted by NoKia
yeah does lack in anything major it but it has a few nice little touches
Posted by RyaN
Yeah some nice touches in there for sure.
The main thing that hacks me off is the battery life... just want to be able to use it for a day without worrying about the fact the battery might die before i get home!

I've just tested this and I'm happy to report that my turbo sim works fine for calls and data using the new 2.2 firmware

I haven't been able to test it properly yet, but I'm actually noticing some improvement in battery life over the last couple of charges. I generally just plug it in every day at work, but it seemed to last longer than usual over the weekend (after the update), and the battery is generally fuller than I'm used to seeing it when I plug it in at work.
My iPhone's still relatively new though (one month yesterday) so it's possible the battery's still improving with conditioning - and obviously usage varies etc..
On the whole I'm happy with the battery life - with the way the phone is used (with lots more video, music, and gaming than my previous handsets have had to provide) it's compares very well, and has never really let me down. I'm sure if I needed it to go longer without charges and just kept it to phone use, it would run a day or two longer - long enough to get by.

Guys, when we receive a new email should this be shown on the Lock Screen?
Right now, if I get a new SMS I get a notification on the Lock Screen. But if I get a new email there's no notification. I can only see new emails notifications when I unlock the screen.
Posted by NoKia
no you dont get notification on the lockscreen, unless you have some kind of lockscreen notification app installed
Posted by smilerthe cheshirecat
There is a SMS notification on the lock screen...
TEXT and the sender's name on an o2 locked iPhone on 2.2
Email is notified when the screen is unlocked...
Posted by NoKia
yeah, but he was asking about email notifcation on the lockscreen

That's a small criticism I'd have of it, actually - on the lock screen you get a notification of an SMS or a missed call, but no indication at all of email.
Since you might have hundreds of emails it makes sense not to flash individual messages up on the screen, but a little envelope icon on the top bar wouldn't go amiss.

Jailbreak and install Intelliscreen. You wont look back. Seriously. I made the plunge and actually PAID for this app yesterday (first decent app i've bought aside from a couple of 59p app store apps) as i feel it takes a lot for me to be impressed with an app, and this is a killer app no doubt about it.
@Boinng, As you say battery life all depends on usage. With mine being jailbroken there's a lot more drain on the battery than normal...especially if i forget to turn things off like SSH after i've been using it! Major battery cainer. However, today my battery seems to be lasting ok but i've not really been using it... I would say only 10% has been drained.
I've read other peoples comments elsewhere that they think there is a slight improvement over battery life, and in other places people say it's got worse. I dunno, it's all too dependant on the environment in which it's been used.

Again, something the jailbreak offers that Apple deem not necessary to put in their standardised firmware

Jailbreak!! So tempted but have thus far managed to refrain - waaaay to scared of c0cking up the phone! (see previous post re this
And seeing Im here, another q for you lads please;
How on earth do I update my apps on itunes?
So far the only way I can do this is from the app store on my phone and this takes aaaaaaaages!
STRIKE MY QUESTION ON THIS POST GUYS!! What a n0b I am for not being able to figure out how to do this! Just sussed it out

a jailbreak will never cock up your phone... it will not brick it, and it's always reversible. The only thing that can potentially damage your phone is unlocking it - which obviously isn't an issue with the 3g.

This puts me off quite a bit
TBH, I spent the last year or so tweaking and hacking my Tytn II to get it the way I wanted, and spent the whole time just wishing that HTC or Microsoft had done the job right in the first place, because most of these third party hacks bring as many problems as they solve.
With the iPhone, it really is pretty much perfect when it comes out the box, and so far I've no compulsion to mess that up. The "classic" design suits me fine
It'd be a different story without the Appstore - I could never have lived with the original iPhone and no third party apps at all - but with all the official stuff available now, I'm quite happy to make my phone my own that way. I actually agree with Apple's approach in limiting what badly written apps can get up to in the background.

Yeah I totally see your point... the appstore does give the iphone that extra lease of life that it didnt have before. To be fair though i only mentioned the jailbreaking being a drain on the battery because of things like SSH. Under normal usage, themes, icons, widgets, Intelliscreen etc etc really dont consume that much battery. Of course, it's a no brainer that a jailbroken iPhone will consume a little more battery than a stock iPhone and i can see this is the angle you're coming in at. As long as you're happy that is the most important thing... one mans meat is another mans poison

hey Ryan so you decided to buy intelliscreen? i guess the other version deosnt work properly in 2.2? what is the name of that font? looks smart

nope, only a restore wipes your data
Posted by RyaN
yeah i decided to bite the bullet and purchase... customer appreciation month @ Intelliborn too so it's only $9.99 atm which is a decent price. Version 2.29 doesnt work properly with 2.2 (as discussed before) and 2.30 was to fix these issues, and already today 2.32 is released. I just wanted to ease of being able to update it immediately in Cydia when updates are released.
The font is called Neo Sans (i think!) Decided i needed a change...something a bit more clean and simple! Found a couple of amazing links for lockclock fonts and system fonts. I think you can install Neo Sans and loads of other fonts directly to your phone if you put this source in Cydia http://xsellize.com/cydia
Also once you've installed this source, install this source http://cydia.hackulo.us/ You'll find 2 very very nice little programs to install there
Posted by NoKia
cheers, does that mean i can install the fonts directly thru cydia? and not need to SSh?
Posted by whentheleveebreaks
Don't you have to restore from custom firmware to jailbreak it? Or once thats done does it use the backup file to put you settings/messages/calls back?
Posted by RyaN
nup. You can use QuickPwn to jailbreak. The only real need to use a Custom Firmware for an iPhone 3g (using Pwnage Tool) is if you want to preserve the baseband and stop the firmware automatically updating it - this is if you are wishing for a soft-unlock in the near future from the iPhone dev team. I'm personally always going to use my iPhone with O2 so it didnt matter to me
