iPhone 3g

specs

watch the ad

Posted by jayce
Perhaps I've read the specs wrong, but if they're claiming it's thinner then I'm yet to believe it:

iPhone dimensions: 115 x 61 x 11.6mm
Weight : 135g

3G iPhone dimensions: 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3mm
Weight : 133g

So it's marginally bigger than the previous generation and 2g lighter.
Pah! Marketing.

Anyhow let's see if this thing is available on other networks apart from O2 in the UK, then it becomes more interesting. If not then it's a case of hack it or look at the offerings to come at the announcement on the 17th June.

I hope can surprise us all.

Just what i wanted to hear, out soon too

Hi all

Well OK it's confirmed that it has HSDPA but something doesn't make sense as the claim of 2.8 faster then EDGE is a severely cut down HSDPA speeds.

Please some one correct me if I'm wrong but isn't EDGE slower than 3G and 3G is 384kbps and i believe EDGE is 280kbps odd well 2.8x faster then 280kbps is well bellow even 1mbps. Even basic HSDPA is up to 3.6mbps and a lot devices are now coming equipped to support up to 7.2mbps as the networks are rolling out support for this.

So what is happening with the 3G iPhones HSDPA support then? as i for one am confused.

Marc

Is anyone else having problems viewing the TV ad? I can't see it in either Firefox 3 or Safari. I just get a blank space in the middle of the page.

Oh and yes - I do have Quicktime installed.

very nice prices, cheap IMO, and the are fixed prices worldwide

the white one:

any news on whether it's just 02 again for the UK?

If so, all the smarty pants out there get your tools ready to begin hacking as soon as the things released

Posted by masseur
ad works fine here in IE

I'm dissapointed there's no 32gb at this time but that said, and to answer a question I'm sure people will ask, I'll be after the white one!

then its iphone shuffle in our house as my daughter gets my current 16gb and her 8gb goes to my son!

Posted by themarques
I think they playing it safe on the Edge v 3G, speeds as not alot of networks world wide will support the higher HSDPA speeds, and it also depends on coverage with 3G. So like the new broadband rules you have to give actual speeds not what the chip can handle if you next to a tower.

So in other words True Marketing.

Is that the one that randomly dials people from the address book?

Well, i must say that i am happy with this announcements today (unlike most of people)..

3(.5)G was the only thing i was missing on the first iPhone and now it`s coming. I am also happy about the price

Can`t wait for it..

Posted by Superluminova
any news on MMS? and your telling me that the $199 price is fixed worldwide? Very good, if thats correct its only going to cost £105 in the uk.

Posted by masseur
to quote macrumourslive quoting from the presentation

$299 for the 16GB -- a white version of this size will be available too.

The iPhone 3G will be available July 11th in 22 countries. The maximum price around the world is $199 USD

so it certainly sounds like it, for the 8gb version at least!

Posted by tranced
my question is: why is it so cheap?

was all the excitement of a new gadget that made the iphone(non 3g one) so expensive?

Posted by technical-expert
8GB ipod touch costs 299usd
16gb iphone is also 299usd

strange

Ya know i dont think the camera side matters its more of an afterthought on the iphone. The screen is so clear the pictures look amazing anyway.

I see nobody is discussing the auto-update OTA, so does that mean even if you jailbreak that apple could force an update to the phone to render it useless, or ban you using the GPS Maps??? or any service that requires it to push to you.

Posted by scouser_75
I'm still bitterly disappointed with the new iPhone. It still does not have the basics that come with most other top end phones (N95, TytnII etc). But never-the-less this time round I'm gonna have to go with it. Can't wait any longer for any more additions May even have to switch to O2

is it possible to set mp3 as ringtones

Anyone notice...

What's in the Box

* Stereo headset with mic
* USB power adapter
* Dock Connector to USB cable
* Documentation
* Cleaning/polishing cloth
* SIM ejector tool <------- bless them

Well I have to say...

It's about time Apple came out with something that wasn't just good to look at!

N95 & TyTN II may look better in the comparison table, but i can say (owned all of mentioned) that N95 nor TyTN II didnt come even close to iPhone. Yes it depends on the type of user you are, but for me iPhone wins clearly. Watching movies / photos / surfing / mp3 / just playing around / .. - can`t be done better on any other phone right now.

According to this you can

Posted by shanespencer
It'll be like the original then; you can make 30 second snippets of your mp3s and sync them to your phone.

Not and Apple fanatic but the price is tempting!!

Wish others would take note.

Fully agree with you no that dude - I too had an N95 and have a Vario III (TytnII) - but all apple had to do was add just a couple more things (which would have been a doddle for them) and voila the perfect phone

All I want is HSDPA and a Today Screen. Nout more really

Not strange at all. The iPod touch doesn't have a $50 a month contract for 24 months.

Totally agree mate. I'll deffo get one at that price, when all others on the market are charging around £300+ at release and even after! Maybe it will be the turning point of phone prices? Hopefully...

Oh look the UK page doesn't have a price...

...surprise, surprise!

Absolutuely spot on, at these prices these should sell like hotcakes!

Posted by Superluminova
£199 / £299 on a £35 a month plan for 18 months?

I don't think it will really sell like hot cakes guys. To sell fantastic amounts it has to be sim free.

Posted by PeterKay
is it not $199 without a contract?

or with a contract!

Posted by Superluminova
It hasn't been stated clearly yet, but i would imagine its with a contract in the UK and US
