There were some entirely newsworthy things Tuukka wrote, imo. They're trying to get a plugin- interface working (and wanted to get flash working in the beta- stage). They think implementing copy and paste would be "easy" - and that they would do it if it didn't ruin the minimalistic UI.

Here's another bit:
> Also, any possibility of providing
> support for directly launching links in the browser, through a program

True. We need to have a look into providing means to launch a page so that Gdesk and others could support it.

---

So I'm looking forward to seeing how it works - specially because of external plugin support (....which it won't be in Opera, on any version, thanks to SE's lack of... lack, and Opera's "close cooperation with Symbian" - that would, allegedly, enable the browser to be integrated elegantly into the UI).

(edit:Besides - imagine something's wrong with the browser, and you can avoid the entire - call SE support.. threaten them on their lives, that kind of thing - wait five months, and not get the bugs fixed in the new firmware - kind of thing.

I have to admit that that sounds pretty good..)

Its out

Posted by aminoff
Seems to require registration and waiting.

Can anyone provide a review or some screenshots and maybe a video of it in action?

Posted by ares
we will provide some stuff like that on uiqblog soon

i have already a suggestion: a virtual keyboard with big buttons, to use when the browser is on landscape

Posted by Yakkaimono
Just installed it and I have to say I'm liking it so far. I also would welcome a virtual keyboard.

I am also digging it...its not perfect, of course, its the first beta, but what they are doing in terms of finger optimizacion is very good

Lets all give some feedback to supportATdigia.com

Just tried it...Well it's pretty slow (tested on WLAN) but ok, it's in a beta stage. What I like most is the finger or stylus swiping over the screen for zoom in/out and the minimal self-hiding interface.

Posted by ares
yes, i love the zoom feature too

Posted by ocean21
Could you please put it in other link? Because I can't access rapidshare at the moment.

thanx

Posted by OluYom
The idea is good. However, I have a few issues:

- its slow, much slower than the built-in Opera on my P1i
- can we have a non-fullscreen option? I like to see the phone's icon indicators
- the address bar implementation needs working on, not too user-friendly

Hopefully, these will be addressed before its out of beta.

I think it would be a good idea for those of us who have signed and tested the browser to write down bugs that we have discovered as well ideas that we would like to see implemented here and send the whole lot to Digia to review.

Posted by Trev1982
ok so i signed up to this site when i first see it on uiq blog and still had no news saying i can download the app, am i missing something

Posted by IRFCA_WDG-3A
I registered with digia the day this browser was out but still they havent sent any regn details or links.

Thanks for info ares!

Aha... Dark theme bug!!!

For example google - select text box - box goes black, text is also black so you can't see what you are typing...

works fine on mine, via wifi or 3G

btw, on the registration:
Tuukka says:
There are two main reasons for requiring registered users: we can inform everyone in the beta to get new version when it is available, and keep trac on how many there are. We will not limit number of participants in the beta, but prefer users registering.

(er.. I'll add this on the uiqblog post later on).

Posted by Yakkaimono
It's weird that you guys still didn't get a mail, I got one 30 minutes after I registered.
The only problem I got with this browser is that it crashes randomly.

i use it only for google reader (iphone version) right now...and its been generaly stable on that

Posted by corrado85
this dumb of a browser does not work on m600i running on tmobile usa GPRS connection.

Posted by wickedass
maybe it is not meant for a gprs connection, thats why it aint working on my phone.

once again

dumb browser.

Posted by hotfudgesoda
Agree that it is a dumb browser.
Could get it to connect.
Also cause a memory error to my phone.
hopefully they can resolve this in new version

Posted by defiantbeast
i wouldnt be so quick to write this browser off or call it dumb. I too am having problems getting it to connect to the internet using a gprs connection. However i see the potential in this app. Keep in mind that it is a beta. im sure most problems will be addressed by the next release. Besides once its working it'll offer a finger friendly browser which i hate to say opera for all its greatness is not

Posted by ares
Guys, new beta should come tomorow

Meanwhile, please answer this

Does it hog as much memory as the native Opera? I'll only consider trying if it uses up less RAM.

Let me try the new version.

thanks

Posted by ares
its much faster and stable...i am quite pleased with how this is shaping up

Posted by 701
I've tried it and it sucks. I'll write a review about it on my site.

Posted by ares
it sucks??? lol...i canīt disagree more...i love it...when they throw in tabs and downloads, i wont use opera 8.65 anymore (opera mini yes, i will still use)

Posted by 701
My problem is: it loads the whole page, without mobile pagination and I have to push it from left to right to see the whole paragraph. If I still wanna zoom out I have to use that ... feature which doesn't always work. And I don't have the patience to try it 5 times until I make it.I'll stick with Opera.

Posted by ares
Right now, the zoom function is working ok, at least for me."in fact, i am browsing and posting at esato with @web

Posted by mode
Ok, nobody answered me so I take it it's crappy and hogs memory

According to my SMP, Opera takes 192k of RAM, while Digia takes only 96k, which is significantly less. As I said, I'm not sure yet, but it's quite awkward to use. I won't uninstall it just yet,I'll test it some more.
@ares:is there a way to fit the content to page like Opera/Opera Mini without zooming out?

Those indications say nothing about real memory usage, are absolutely useless.
Just look at RAM icon.
Opera takes about 7 - 9 MB of RAM, up to 10 - 11, according to what you open, if you load a whole page and use passwords.
On my P990i, I was out of RAM quickly after the start, but it was first beta.
Maybe second is better for RAM.
Basically, P990 is very bad for memory hungry apps.

Yes, I agree. It registered 96k on SMP but just moments after using it the 'out of memory' prompt popped out and images won't load, text get jumbled up and it just became idle. Absolutely unusable on a 1st gen UIQ3, but I do find the interface refreshing and nice to navigate with. My other problem is accessing the settings since it's no where to be found.

Posted by wardh
how to access the virtual keyboard in address bar with w960?

Posted by doministry
All the settings are accessible via long press on the screen.

Posted by ares
new version is available
