Say, if someone behaves a certain way on an online forum, or shows a certain personality while chatting. Do you think it reflects how he is in the real world, or do you think people can be totally the opposite?

I think you will find a majority of people will say that they are the same person online as they are in real life but it's total bullsh*t. You can be anyone you wan't to be online, all you need to do is WIKI something and you can know enough about it to fool most people into believing your an expert at it.
I guarantee that every single person on this forum has lied about one or more aspects of their lives, be a little white lie or something major, everyone has done it, myself included. The mask of the internet is an easy one to hide behind and pretend you are someone else.
For those members who have actually met each other in person, usually haven't hidden much, because they actively sought out the meeting, means that they are comfortable enough with their persona online and that they believe it reflects their true personality.
The majority of regular active members will be more true to themselves online. The reason being that the less you post, the less people know about you, the less questions they are going to ask as to the authenticity of your story.
Thats what i think.
I just WIKI'd human behaviour.
Or did I?

I've been told several times that I'm just as annoying and anti-social in real life as I am on the Internet
Bloody muppets! What do they know?

it depends on the situation, i think.. but most of the time, i think people act different in forums/chat.. for some reason, people want to act cool, smart, when they are online.. and what trigodor said, you can be anybody you want to be in the "cyber world" and it's actually not surprising.. people lie to other people's faces all the time, even face to face.. why should it be hard for them to do it online??

i like to just be... ME!!

@QVGA, I find your posts somewhat "arrogant" and "on the face" kind of ones. I stand by my story whatever you say is what your posts scream. (most of the time you're correct though.) Are you like this in real life?
Did not mean to offend you, just what I felt.
As for me, i'm much more outspoken in my online guise.

I was hoping you wouldn't say that, now we know it all

Its a virtual world so people can say whatever they feel like knowing that they cannot be touched or found out. Also, you cannot know somebodys emotions without looking at their face i.e. if I am angry, I will look angry. A better example would be if I were criticised today online I would ignore it but if in a bad mood, I would go nuts especially knowing that I could not be harmed physically.

because your a badass

i dont think it is 100% true.
i find myself more eloquent here than in "real world".

In my experience, people's online persona is roughly similar to how they are in real life. They're just braver, that's all
But I do realise that there are plenty of nutters out there who adopt completely different personalities for one reason or another.

I think people are always different IRL. I don't know why, I guess it's the fact that it's... the internet.

it's just like NEO in Matrix.
Real world => Mr. Anderson
Matrix => Neo

Well I, never lie about anything on the internet. Im just and average 20 year old girl looking to find love online. Hit me up: hotchick666@hotmail.co.uk. I have just won the lottery so im looking to share my winnings!
Was that a bit OTT? To be honest I think people will act in a similar way online as they do in real life. Despite the first few lines of this message, I tend to act more maturely online.

I think you actualy have to meet some one in person to decide if they are good people or not. Like some one else said, you can act more aggresive online because you know you can't be harmed. That explains why many people act like complete pri*ks online. They think they can have a laugh so they act like idiots online, when in real life they could be decent people.

wifey was just as i thought, if not better

i think ppl r probably different, but it's tricky to tell if u don't meet a person in real life...
the forum is useful cos u mix with ppl from many walks of life...

Yeah pretty much

I think mostly people's online persona is accurate, but may only be a small part of their actual persona. We only reveal very narrow band of who we are in total online. There is so much about our personalities that can't be judged from our online behaviour.
So I think most of us are being ourselves on the internet, but if we judge a person only on how they appear on the internet then we are not judging the whole person.

Seeing here on Esato, how people sometimes react, when someone has a different opinion about a phone they like (or dislike), I think, they'd better get a life and I can only hope (for their friends and relatives), that they're less agressive in real life.

You never know a person for real until you meet them and get to know them, thats a fact, cos everything changes hahaha.

Actually in the Matrix program he was Thomas Anderson but online and when released he became Neo.
Offline I'm actually a T1000 Terminator sent back from the year 2029. Anyone seen a member called John Connor? If so please PM me...

I'm exactly the same in real life. Of course I haven't told anyone yet that I'm the King of Siam. Or that I'm also a multi-billionaire married to Jennifer Love Hewitt (that other guy is just a front).
But now you all know, my secret is out!
Posted by Davo_169
well i'm totally different online than i am in the real world.

Me too. Off line I'm a girl....
(JOKE!)
