Tips for a Faster T68i

We all know that our t68i's are a bit slow, especially for old firmware versions. But here's a workaround if you want more speed, but sacrificing the aesthetic look on your screen.

One day i just got irritated waiting for the menus to popup when I press it or when typing an sms, it just takes too long to go to the next character. I also got pissed when I can’t record longer Audio due to lack of memory.

Well here's what I did that I THINK, made my phone faster and got a bigger free memory.

1 ) remove your background picture
2 ) disable your screensaver picture
3 ) use the CLASSICAL theme, which is the default theme
4 ) put all your contacts and numbers only in the phone memory, not in the sim memory
5 ) do not save sms in your sim card
6 ) always keep your sms messages to a minimum, backup all read sms in your Phone Book & Text Message Manager Software
7 ) turn off bluetooth when not needed
8 ) disable Greeting Startup
9 ) leave at least 300kb free space in your phone
10) you can change your font to small so that you don't have to scroll all the way down under long menus, same goes while using wap or reading sms
11) use the slide volume up/volume down when scrolling or while using wap
12) under sms T9, disable the option "Show Candidates"
13) make a fresh reboot once you experience lag in your phone, better yet remove your battery once in a while for a hard reboot.
14) use the alternate scroll while reading sms by using the * and # keys
15) use the Shortcuts menus
16) and lastly, my rule of the thumb, "remove all unneeded themes, pictures, melodies, mms templates, old sms, old contact nos., and etc., so that your phone can have the extra memory for it to breaaathhhhh.

well these steps are just my own observations and beliefs, I know it hasn't been tested scientifically, but somehow based on my experience, my t68i got a bit faster.

Nice tips Randy!

I hadn't thought of moving all the messaes I wanted to keep to the PC... have done so now

Posted by jellyellie
cool i never knew about that alternate scroll in SMS'

Posted by Jison
Gr8 tip, but isn't all that a little boring?

Posted by Scoobydoo
Good idea - but my phone looks & feels a bit naked now

Posted by GREK
isnt it better to make bigger text? that way there wont be as many pixels/options:) i think i got a slightly better performance on my t39(tho havent tested much just tried it for 10sec)

Posted by mkt
Yeah, do all thet things and t68i will loose all it's charm

Not worth, at least for me, to sacrifice all the things i like in t 68i just to scroll menus a few miliseconds faster.

Posted by mj36
cool, overall ive got 3 custom themes plenty of pics and 73 ringtones and ive still got 345kb space.

i think the t68i looks stupit when you have the deafault text size, as soon as i got my t68i i changed the text size to smallest

Posted by mj36
oh and heres another tip to get perfection!

click

>wap services
>advanced

and then clear cache and cookies ect.

Posted by randyrivera
@jison, yeah it's boring to disable your background, etc.

@mj36, that's a good tip too

Geez! If you do all these then what's the point of buying the T68i? It makes no sense!

Im hooked on downloadin themes and screensavers and changing my t68's looks almost everyday, its the reason why i never get tired of my phone unlike wt the nokias,i can live wth its few setbacks ü

Let's not be too harsh - you don't need to use ALL thise tips, if you don't want to, I'm sure just using some of them will help.

You can also use the numerals on your keypad to select your options instead of scrolling with the joystick - this also works from the desktop icons menu, "9" will select "My shortcuts" etc.

Posted by Jowi
as cophia says...you don't need to do ALL this things..

I just disabled startup message & deleted unnecessary pics, tones, themes.

@jowi, tama ka dyan

@cophia, you're absolutely right

R6A

I use a t68i with 'Candidates in SMS' on. How do I remove candidates from the list? I see some entries that I don't need and like to delete them.

Posted by randyrivera
just press the # sign for at least 3 seconds, then when the menu pops up, just ssekect the "abc" option instead of the "English" option

Posted by bart
small question, what uses the most a whit theme and background or a more dark backgournd and theme?

Posted by JGL
Thanks RandyR.

What I actually mean is, while still having 'Candidates' activated, how do I delete/remove selected words from the candidates list? I don't want to disable candidates since I find it very useful. However, there are some words in the list of candidates that are useless, so I'd like to remove them. I don't know though if this is possible.

Posted by Jowi
i use darker theme backgrounds

I have done a similar cleanup (T68i with R6A) but what seemed to improve the speed most was switching to the Classic theme and removing useless default pictures. Having a background on does not seem to negatively impact performace.

oh i see. sorry but you cant remove the candidates. it's pre programmed into your phone already. but as of the new words that you have saved, it just cycles, meaning, your unused user-saved candidates will be deleted first to make way for the new user-saved candidates. Hmmm.... confusing huh?

Hey randy, did you buy the R520 for your wife from ying?

Posted by benjamingreenau

No, disabling candidates doesnt disable t9

upgrade it to R8A...creating/typing new sms is fast

if you don't want all those features in T68, why not just get a T600 or nokia 8210, basic phone. rather than you complain n complain n complain......sighhhhh

Posted by tlk
buy a T10 will solve the problem....

similar spec to an empty t68i right??

Posted by genghisackroyd
tlk,

You mean a 'T610', right?

I agree, its not worth it. I love this phone for all of the customizable stuff on it. Taking all of that away makes the phone boring.

Funny reading your Post of "our" slow t68i!

My phone is and was always "clean", so I never had a slow phone!

If the SMS memory is low and all the other s**t is deleted you can even have a background pic such as a screensaver...

A SE without a background pic is simply boooooorrrrring!!!

Digital

Posted by Artsky32
yup, the t68i is boring w/out all those themes, etc. it is what makes it unique IMHO

Posted by Whave
@bart i think white background & theme consumes more battery power, because if you turn your phone off, the screen turns black. and the screensaver clock has black background also

Good work

@randyrivera the original poster - great tips and observations!

I've had my T68i for 7 months now and I've got a little bored of the 'pretty' aspects.

I'm now looking at my T68i as a 'serious' piece of phone kit - POP3/IMAP4 email protocols and wap via GPRS (or GSM), and IR, vibrating alert, calendar synch'ing with Outlook etc.

And I want it fast!

Steven.

He! He! I got over 800kb of free memory left and r6a SW,i dont think it will go much faster now, maybe r8a wud slow it down with 4 games added but i will still get the upgrade anyway! :-D

Posted by Jowi
the 4 added games doesnt have an effect on the speed of the phone...
