So does anyone know when we can expect Raphael?

Posted by koto
I must say it looks very good. Does it have A2DP?

Guys, I believe the HTC Diamond doesn't have a memory card slot - so it'll be restricted to the 4gb internal memory. Right?

BUT I read somewhere that the T-Mobile version - MDA Compact 4 - will have a memory card slot. Can anyone confirm this please.

Posted by Yakkaimono
The Diamond doesn't have a card slot so the MDA Compact 4 won't also have a card slot cause they're identical in construction.

Posted by scouser_75
Have a read of this link dude. It may be a load of rubbish, but here's to hoping

http://www.multicellphone.com[....]pact-iv-from-t-mobile-germany/

Posted by Yakkaimono
You could hope for it since the MDA Compact 4 has a slightly different design.
Though would be weird if HTC put a slot in the MDA but not in their Diamond and after a small search on the web I couldn't find any other sites besides yours which states that the MDA will have a card slot.

Posted by scouser_75
Fingers crossed it has a memory slot.

If it's only 4gb it would not even be worth looking at:(

There appears to be no slot for memory cards.
Unless I am very much mistaken.

@ BlackBauer24
You aren't mistaken. Diamond doesn't have a slot but therefore Raphael is gonna have one.

I really want to start seeing some detailed in depth reviews of the final devices. I hope I won’t have to wait much longer!

The thing I would like to know more than any other is if T-mobile will have debilitated their version of this device (MDA Compact IV) by removing Wi-Fi similar to what they did in the MDA Compact III. I sincerely hope not!

If there’s anyone from T-mobile looking at this forum can you confirm?

Hey all, just to let you know that the group over at XDA-Developers have created a sub-forum specifically for the HTC Diamond.

I don’t know how many of you are aware of them, but this is actually great news, as the wealth of experience that group will bring in terms of resolving bugs, unlocking the handset, bringing new and cooked ROMs, de-branding operator customisations, etc... is invaluable.

In fact they are already starting to talk about cooked ROM’s!

Anyway, I suggest you go have a look here...

Following news that x1387 (VERY reputable eBay seller ) has these for sale, anyone have a video of the handwriting recognition? I put up a post at http://www.coolsmartphone.com/index.php, hopefully they'll provide the goods.

Unboxing mini review with photo shots:

Hot as pancakes, the HTC Touch Diamond is definitely in high demand. I (actually not just me, a whole bunch of guys) bagged for one to do photo shooting and reviews a week before the launch. And then on this Monday, I found colleagues are waiting for me to get back to work and ¡§escorted¡¨ me to my desk. I thought, what is going on? Then I saw the black diamond shaped box sitting on my desk, I know why I am suddenly getting popular this morning. Quickly before doing anything else, I unboxed the HTC diamond and arranged the photo shooting.

In the package it comes with a Battery, a charger, a design matched handsfree, a USB cable, two styluses, CD and Manual.

In the user interface, there are mainly three rows. The top are the icons to show you what is being active and the Windows Mobile drop down menu. The big middle application menu, and the bottom application launcher rolling menu. You can use your thumb to roll the bottom menu to find the right application. The reaction for jumping from one app to another app is not very fast. It is around 0.5 to 1 second wait.

The music application in action. The thumb flipping control is fast in here.

Other than the touchscreen, this is the main navigation. The four buttons located at the corners are clickable. The fun part of the navigation is the multi-directional round button. It is somewhat like the Nokia D-Pad, it is pressure sensitive. When circling around the outer rim, you can zoom and unzoom pictures. When holding the centre button, you can trigger the autofocus. Press to shoot the picture. The only problem I found is that, the central round button is a little bit too small. If you have got big thumb like some of my colleagues, you will press all the directional buttons and the central button all together. Then of course the HTC Diamond does not know what you wanted to do.

4GB internal memory. Well, you cannot add more. So you may need to do some house cleaning yourself.

3.2 mega pixel camera, but with no flash. We will show you the picture quality later on.

Stylus is located at the bottom with magnetic holding. Also the software is smart enough to know you will want to write something when you pull out the stylus and launch the writing application.

Windows mobile interface.

Windows Mobile 6.1 professional

Qualcomm 528MHz CPU and 640x480 65K colour resolution screen. The screen quality is actually very good.

There are three styles of virtual keypads for you to choose from. This one is phone style. It is so obvious.

For big thumbers, this is a bigger 20 keys Qwerty keyboard. Not sure you will like it or not.

At last the full Qwerty keyboard layout to choose from.

Camera in Action! When you touch and hold the round navigation button, the focus area will become green and beep you when focused. When ready, press to shoot.

Photo album interface. You can do the thumb flipping trick again to check the next or previous photo images. When clicked inside to view a picture, you can circle on the screen to zoom and hold to drag. This is the nice design of the Touch FLO 3D user interface.

Actual photo quality. Again, we just resized the picture to fit in with no retouch on them. You can see the quality of this indoor photo with no flash light support form the phone. Even the dents on the toys can be clearly seen.

Another shot. I have just shot similar stuff with the Nokia N78. The photo qualities are comparable. Of course the N78 has flash light support that is slightly better. For a 3.2 mega pixel camera in a pocket PC, the HTC Diamond is definitely a winner.

As I am so excited about reviewing the phone, I forgot to describe the physical impression. The HTC Touch Diamond is extremely thin and small. The diamond shaped back is actually quite flat to fit on any table. Also the tapped back makes it good to hold on hand without the squary edge hurting the plam. The 2.8 inches touchscreen is not big but the LCD quality is definitely very good. In general, the reaction of the new touch interface is quick, a lot quicker than the previous "Touches". I will say definitely a recommended Windows Mobile phone.

Thanks so much Plemix!

May I just ask how's the sound quality of this phone when using an earphone?

Posted by Plemix.com
@bronoxdude,
Sorry, I have not tested the earphone quality back then. May be someone had tried that can help to find out.

Phone arena has a very good review of this phone, going into touch flo 3d in detail.

Its a good phone but I don't believe that touch flo 3d will make the main tasks easier or say comparable to A200 se os. The calender is still the same WM as well as the sending text messages. When sending a text message, you don't have your recent list at hand as far as I can see. All touch flo does is allow you to read a text message the rest is still wm.

Anyone know whether touch flo 3d supports WM homescreen plugins on its 'home' screen when the clock is minimized?

I love the look of this i want one. Im loving the VGA screen and camera pictures look great too. Can just imagine what the camera view finder and pictures will look like on that screen. I prefer this to the Xperia that SE phone is way too big. I love the fact of everything it can do in such a small ish size. Does anyone know how much this will cost sim free.

Well, I got my touch diamond yesterday, and so far I'm loving it. Beats the pants of all my previous SE P series phones. Handwriting recognition seems less intuitive, but then again, I have used SE's version since the p800!

If you have any specific questions which haven't been answered in all the reviews around, just give me a shout.

Comes recommended from me though!
Daz.

Hi Daz,
congrats on the new phone. Is yours a sim free model, and if so does it come with tomtom or any other gps software?
Also, if a text message comes through or a call is missed, will the stand by screen show this, or do you have to press a botton to turn on the screen to look?

Posted by themarques
Thats got to be the biggest wall charger I have seen on a modern phone.

Posted by Peio
I've just ordered mine today, I hope I will love that phone as much as my previous K800 and P1i..! It's weird to leave SE but X1 seems so far away from now

What are the must-have softwares on WM6?
Has anyone tried the "tweaks" from xda-developpers to improve the phone performance?

Hey. Yes, it's sim free. It came with no GPS software, I installed tomtom mobile 6.0 and it seems to work fine. Am doing a longer distance journey today, so will see how well it works.

Regarding missed calls/sms, you have a number of options. If you want to save battery, the device can completely power down, you get notified of calls/txt by a vibrate/tone, then it will power down after whatever timeout you have set again.

I actually started to use S2U2, it handles the locking of my phone. I simply tap the power button to power down the device, then to check missed calls/texts, I just tap it again. The phone remains locked, but I can see the crucial info. Notably, the center wheel lights up if you do have a missed notification.

If you're less bothered about battery life, then you can have it never "power down", and always see call/sms status.

Hope that helps, Daz.

The wall charger is actually pretty sweet, has a nice HTC light up effect. But yeh, its slightly larger than the SE charger I suppose. Also, the cable isn't that long.

Must have, well, I'd go over to xda-developers, they know more than I do. I've installed a few just to try them out atm.

The tweaks up the ram usage, but yes, they make TF3D much faster. TF3D does seem to have a memory leak though, I really hope it's fixed otherwise the uptime before a reboot is pretty poor. Nothing like my unstoppable P1i.

Yeah, that forum is impressive, the guys are working faast
Bad news about the memory leak, but it will surely be fixed. It's hard to understand all that rom changing process and reg editing without having the phone, but it seems like those guys can do whatever they want on WM platform!

Posted by dazbradbury
Yeh, either its simply much more hackable than symbian, or more people are putting more effort into it. With WM the number of phones you affect is dramatically higher.

Plus, the registry system seems on the surface to be very similar to windows, I've even made a few changes myself!

Posted by bavlondon2
Anyone got this yet?

Posted by ocean21
Anyone knows the resolution of video that it can record?

Posted by bavlondon2
Ive not seen any mention of that but im hoping VGA 30fps. Even the X1 manages that and this is using the same processor so I hope so.

For some reason I cant see it on contract anywhere in the UK. Only sim free. Is this going to come out on each operator branded like the MDA vario ect...?

I believe that it was delayed for a hardware upgrade but is still due for a mid July release on most of the major networks. Vodafone have a release date of the 13/14th July. O2 and T-Mobile are getting their own versions with slightly different casings.

Posted by dazbradbury
I dont think it was delayed for a hardware upgrade, but a rom upgrade. A new ROM was released with the new batch of sim-free UK phones. I assume the operators are now working with this batch to process and test them.

How responsive have you found the touchscreen qwerty?

Do you know if theres a way to get wm homescreen plugins into the touch flo 3d home screen? Say when the time is minimised?

Posted by dainesefreak
Daz- you're right I meant ROM. I'd assume everything is more or less ready and is going through branding/packaging.

I dont use the qwerty, in fact, I'm trying to get used to the WM handwriting recognition. I have to say, SE's is much better. However, the keyboard seems good enough, needs use of a stylus though. HTC have implemented a number of differing keyboards to use though, so am sure most people's needs are satisfied.

As far as I'm aware it's NOT possible if you have TF3D enabled. You can however disable TF3D if you need your home plugins.

I've just installed a new cooked ROM from xda-dev forums. Will see if it improves speed at all, although, I've not found it to be a problem.

Cheers,
Daz.

Do you satisfy with the camera quality in Diamond? How about the vibration and ringtones, are they loud enough?

thanx

Posted by Peio
Hi

I've had my diamond since 7 days and I'm absolutely impressed with it. After installing new rom, it's reaaally fast and easy to use.

The only bad points at the time are:

- battery: not as good as my P1i, but in the end it lasts 24h (flight mode during night) with moderate/high usage (10min calls + sms + 10min GPS on tomtom7 + 4h connected to wifi at home + 3 mailboxes scheduled every 15min switching between HSDPA/Edge + 4h of music/radio at work + lots of manipulations as it's new for me)

- RAM: only 55mb available at the start, but I haven't had any freezes at the moment. Hopefully it will be improved

For your questions:
- qwerty is needs a little concentration to use with finger, but there's a new tweak which allows landscape mode in every app (sms/mail/office...) by holding the call key, so you have the landscape keyboard everytime and it's really easy to use like that
- photos quality: better scharpness/contrasts than P1i, but not as good as K850's photos in this forum.

I have few question

How is the sound quality compared to P1
How do u feel lack of keyboard for long typing compared to P1, personally w/o lack of any kind of feedback, wouldnt it be irritating to type?

Thanks

The sound quality is not so good, it's the same as the P1i with the crappy headseat that comes in the box.

But i'm planning to buy this:

and put my 3.5mm HPM-75 "earings" (sry i don't know the word in english) in that remote, and i think the sound quality will be as good as SE.

About typing, I don't think I'll be ever able to type as fast as my P1i, but it's really easy most of the time. It's much more difficult (impossible?) when you're walking or driving though... But to send sms /short mails/ web surfing, it's really enough, and the big screen / thinness of the phone really worth it for me.

Posted by technical-expert
thanks

but i have two more questions

does it have missed call/sms LED indicator like p1

Is it possible to scroll thru music list with the circular navigation around the wheel (i mean if u directly want to get to artist name say w.......). u have to swipe .. swipe to get to to w.......I saw that there is no scroll bar in media player?or can u use hardware button to scroll up or down the list ?

[ This Message was edited by: technical-expert on 2008-06-25 15:28 ]

Posted by Peio
1- There's no "led", but 4 hidden white leds that form a thin white circle around the center button, that animates according to the notification: make circles clockwise, anticlockwise etc...

2- No, the circle sensitive wheel doesn't activate in that case, but you can slide your finger "iphone-like" to scroll down very fast in artists list (edit: and yes you can use the hardware buttons also)
