The History of Bluetooth and how it all started inside latest issue of What Mobile. It all started in 985 AD because of some bloke who unified Denmark and Norway. His name was King Harald 'Bluetooth' Blåtand and was King of Denmark between 940 & 985 AD and thanks to his good deeds scientists decided to name the networking technology Bluetooth after him. Then Ericsson invented the technology. Read more at www.whatmobile.net or buy the mag and go to Tech Know.

try looking at any fone with a bluetooth, a brief history is there haha!

Posted by Bonovox
The very first phone with Bluetooth was the Ericsson R520 nice phone for its time except the typical old tall Ericsson chubby ariel lol.

Posted by belialwafu
yup, its a good invention of ericsson, i liked it. haha rather than infrared so frustrating

Posted by Bonovox
Yes the problem with infrared was you had to put both phones very close together and sometimes it would not work properly in daylight as no other light should get in the way. Hail Bluetooth.

Posted by Twometre
I fo one wouldnt even dream of jhe infrared. The electro magnetic spectrum waves of the bluetooth are much more powerfull and fast to connect. But then do we have any remote controls that use bluetooth?

Posted by belialwafu
nope. its infrared, but its so much different from the infrared of cellphones, in remotes you can use it for a few meters away from the tv and still responds. but can you do that in cellphones? no, because you need it centimetres away and the speed is so slow.

Hi all,

Ericsson where indeed innovators in adapting Bluetooth technology for Mobile Phones one of the first items they developed was Bluetooth Headset that made you look like a switchboard operator. They also developed the first Bluetooth adapter for handsets so non Bluetooth equipped handsets could take advantage of this technology.

I was fortunate at that time to have access to late proto's for testing and evaluation as well as the below SH-888 which i sold large numbers of as it really was a breakthrough Data product at the time.

If i remember correctly the first was the HBH-10 that included the adapter BDA-10 for your non Bluetooth Ericsson handset. Pictures and details can be seen here along with a staggering price of $195 back in the late 90's compare that to the size and price now.

If my memory serves me right one of the first and definitely IMO the best Bluetooth equipped Data handsets was the SH888 a truly great handset in it's time. As can be seen here

http://www.ciao.co.uk/Sony_Ericsson_SH888__87248

This at the time was my favorite handset and miles ahead of anything else on offer and back then 9,600 or 14,400kbps where the max Data speeds available and that is why the current speeds of up to 3.6mbps are so amazing to me.

Personally i really miss those days and the great handsets that Ericsson delivered brimming with the latest tech and quality.

Marc

Me too used to love the old Ericsson phones.

Posted by belialwafu
I never knew bluetooth before? is there already bluetooth on the 90's?! oh men i dont know my history, lol! I only knew it when my sister bought her w700i, and i bought one too

Posted by Bonovox
Ericsson first amounced Bluetooth in 1994 and released the first Bluetooth enabled phone and headset in 2000. Quite a gap though between invention and release. First Bluetooth phone was the Ericsson R520 which i loved way back in the day look it up on the net old Ericsson mobiles.

imagine if ericsson didnt share there technology to nokia, samsung, moto etc. lol they'll be stuck to infrared unless they make a new bluetooth like thingy. haha

i also posted a video ages ago in the thread of the first public presentation by of bt... if only i knew where it is...

Hi all,

It actually suffered from many delays before it came to market the original Bluetooth headset was first publicly shown at the Mobile Data Show @ Earls Court in the winter of 97 if remember correctly and then still faced many delays prior to launch.

At this Show i had a demo area within the Mobile Data Association's stand as was a full member and this was one of the benefits of being a full member.

I was of course at that time only using Ericsson equipment and had great support from them. I was mainly demonstrating the GC-25 data card running on a Toshiba Libretto running Windows NT besides other devices and solutions but that was the newest tech then.

This was one of the fist ever Data PCMCIA Data cards and i had been involved in final testing of the product and was responsible for the addition of an ariel on a lead. As whilst final testing discovered on some Laptops when the ariel was fixed on the card it caused really annoying feedback noise.

This period of time was really the beginning of Mobile Data and it's quite amazing to see just how far it has progressed in the last 10 years. At the rate it is developing now i can't wait for the next 4-5 years and all the advancements that will bring with it.

Although if i am honest i don't believe Bluetooth has advanced as a much as it might have as an open standard even today their is still incompatibility problems. Also A2DP IMO really needs better bandwidth to fully deliver as good a sound as a wired solution does.
