I constantly have the little G sign showing in the top left of the screen, if the phone is nearer a speaker you can hear the interference as if the GPRS is connecting all the time.

This is causing battery life to drop and i have to charge almost everyday.

On my w810i there was an option in the settings where you could turn off GRPS so that it only connected when it was needed for instance if receiving a picture message or connecting to wap etc.

On the K850 there doesnt seem to be this option and the G has been there since i got the phone.

I believe it is NOT the sign that you are connecting to the internet. The G, E, H, or 3G icon is just an ordinary icon meaning that such a service is available on your area, for your SIMcard. I had one card that didn't show E or G symbol simply because it isn't registered yet to GPRS or EGDE service. Here in my town, I always get E, meaning EDGE.
And I don't think it will drain out battery if it is just a sign or a symbol. The blue globe is the real indicator that you are being connected. You shouldn't worry that much.

...and the noise you hear in the speaker is mostly the normal phone communicating with the base tower when the base tower sends a "are you still there" signal or if the phone is searching for better reception

I remember there used to be a settings in phones that let you decide how frequent the phone did that, and changing that setting could save battery life but the payoff was that you didn't always have the best possible signal
