Can you use SE accelerometer phones as a pedometer

This is definately possible, cause i've seen it acheived on other phones. Is there a java app that utilises the accelerometer data into footsteps, with this you can do so much like work out total distance walked and stuff. If anyone has any luck something like this, please tell me...

I know the w580i has this function built in. But that model of phone uses a specific type of accelerometer not found in other phone models..
