Hello
Coming upto my 16th birthday, and although i've hated scooters all through my life there seeming so attractive to get one so i think im going to do so. Im pretty much a noob with bikes never fiddled with them but my dads a nutter with them so a repair job would tickle his fancy
So basically looking for recommendations on a scoot that i can purchase and insure for around a grand, £1200 at the most. A few of my mates have the Peugeot Speedfighter and they seem decent looking? I will definitly be buying used of course, and it probably must be a 2 stroke.
Just hoping some of you have experience in the area, if not my bad.
Thanks anyway
Danny

Don't be a fag, get a proper bike! You'll kill any of your "ped" mates and have a lot more control over acceleration. Mine had a full sports exhaust and was derestricted and cracked out about 70mph! Plus they sound the dogs doolahs!
Second hand ones can be bought cheap, I sold mine for £650, it was 6 years old with just 330 kilometres on the clock! Just like new. Insurance aint bad either.

What like a CPI ? What make/model was yours mate?
Posted by Red_Rach
If he's only 16 he won't be able to get a bike till he's 17 will he? Not a powerful one anyway. Make sure you take your CBT, it's illegal not to.
Posted by Danny_BFC
Yeah i wont be doing any illegal activities
I know you can get 50 Bikes which would thrash a scooter but i also know there higher on insurance etc.
Like this one which tickled my fancy when i saw one on sunday:
Derbi Senda 12 Year old lolllll
ok so that ones ancient but its looks niice
Posted by arien617
This is it.
It's a bit off a grand... but it's something to save for.
Damn I want one.
Got a quote for a 1.6 Alfa 147 for myself, for when I'm 17.
£6500.
Car's only £1500!
F*ck off.
And aftermarket rims count as a mod and no one will even insure me with them on!
I hate insurance. Gimps.
Posted by Danny_BFC
Dont go higher than 1.4 for your first mate. If your after a class car tho think VW polo/lupo. My mates mate has a 1 litre Polo on a 96P. Not fast but looks good
Posted by Daedalus85
Save your money and be the envy of your friends, but your first car in a years time, while they'll be stuck with their hairdryer powered bicycles because they spent all their money early on.
As for the Alfa 147, you're young, of course it's going to cost a bloody fortune, make do with a crap car like everyone else does to start with, duh....
Posted by arien617
I know guys. Not an idiot. Just wanted to try my chances with something a little nicer.
2-3 year old Aygos for pretty cheap.
Same for the Citroen C2.
Those are quite nice, and I'm only 15 now...
They'll only be a coupla grand when I'm 17

get a car, cars are the way forward... (anyways you cant pick up your girl on a scooter
Posted by fatreg
^ you also can't get a car until you are 17....
All I will say about a 'ped is, you will fall off.... I don't know anyone that has had a ped and not crashed/fallen of it...
Also... Don't tailgate cars on 'peds..... My little brother would tell you all about this, I nearly killed him when he was tailing me, I had to emergency stop to stop me hitting another kid on a ped with no lights on (it was 11pm in November), So I stop, my brothers ped doesn't...... well not until it's read ended my car and he has flown over my car and landed sprawled over my bonnet and on the floor..... needless to say he has never rode a 'ped since, wait a year and buy a car, it really really is a safer and more sensible option, I'm well aware what it was like being 16 and knowing I could have gone at got a scooter, but too many push bike accidents taught me I shouldn't have bought a scooter, so didn't...
AND! if you do get a 'ped, don't do what the d!cks do round here, if you're on your 'ped, have a helmet on, it will save your life if needed, I owe my life to Giro, the helmet people, they make helmets for push bikes and without them I wouldn't be here quite simply.......
If I think of anything else I'll be sure to get back to you!

Are you a complete numpty or are you trying harder today?
You obviously cant get a car at 16. Unless your going to show me some concept car from france which runs with a 49cc engine and can do 15mph?
[edit] Thanks for all that Fatreg, made me think. Therers a few of my mates who have taken a similar approach and i admit i did a dick'heady thing on my mates scooter the other day. I was on the back without a helmet but i loved it and thats no excuse i know what could've happened

I did say it's something to save up for. I mean what's it got? 180bhp?
That's just plain stupid. Cool. But stupid.

@ arien617:
Yeah mate, it's OTT power to weight ratio certainly appeals.
The latest (K7 and K8) models push out a claimed 185 bhp. Wonderful, ballistic excess... gotta love it, LOL.

I do not know if they still sell them but Gilera Runner or Piaggio NRG are great scooters. Had one, driven loads of them and Piaggio/Gilera are far best. Also Yamaha Aerox. I didn't look for them for quite some time.. Sadly now are 4stroke, right? Whatever you choose, 1st rule is a helmet, 2nd is do not tune it, trust me. There is no end to it. I have also fallen for atleast 20 times from mine... And drive for everyone, not only for yourself, if you get my point..

@danny
I meant a 50cc bike yes, of course you can ride these at 16.
Everyone says wait and get a car, but if you can afford it get a bike first. If you go with a decent insurer you will have a years no claims to go towards your car insurance. My friend did this and had a 1.6 turbo Golf for a first car, until it was written off after 5 days (not his fault) so he got a 1.6 Astra sport and still paid less than £1500 insurance. All because he HAD a bike at 16!
Of course they are more dangerous, and many many accidents on bikes aren't the rider's fault. However if you act sensibly (who does at 16?

I had my first motorbike at 15 (15 years ago
Best of all. I was exempt from doing the theory test because I'd already got my full motorbike licence
3rd party insurance as a learner on the MT50 was just £420 so wasn't too bad.

I think wasn't is the operative word there...........

Get a Piaggio, gilera or aprillia ped mate. I would say a gilera runner as they are comfortable and when derestricted they will do about 45mph.
Also they use piaggio(they are the same company as piaggio) engines which are really easy to tune so if you add a sports exhaust and a 70cc kit, you can reach about 60mph real speed.
Have a look at the forums on http://www.scootershack.co.uk. there is a lot of moped owners on there.

£1000+ to look like a chavvy tit? Can't you just wear burberry and argos-jewelery instead?
Posted by tapojyoti
@the one that said cool but stupid, get a 9999mph bike, and then run it on full speed on a bridge...You're sure to reach the sun or the moon depending whether it'd day or night, though going to the sun would cost too much time..

Ok Narrowed it down to a scooter now. Bikes would be too impractical at the moment and there turnin out more expensive than the scooters which i am on a tight budget so every little helps etc.
Its Either between
Peugeot Jetforce
Aprilla SR50
Gilerra Runner
Peugeot Speedfight

Gilera Runner, please. Sweet sc. Very driveable...
Malossi and Polini are the houses for the tuning parts, but I wouldn't recommend it. I had crankshaft replaced, along with racing bearings, variator, 1st set of gears, belt, carburator DellOrto 21mm, Polini Racing kit, racing clutch, racing brake pads, Arrow exhaust.... Trust me, there is no end to it...
BTW, it pissed on tuned SR50

If i was getting a bike like that i'd probs be looking at a yamaha TZR
And Kenoby pal how much did you end up spending on yours?

If your getting a scooter I would make sure you're gonna get insured with a company that will give you no claims.......
Otherwise just buy a car and get it in good condition and roadworthy for when you are 17

Around 1500 Euro with that setup. More if you include replaced parts... damaged ones..

I had a Gilerra Runner back when i was 16. got it derestricted and put on a sports exhaust and used to get 60mph out of it hit nearly 70mph going down hill once! the acceleration is brilliant as well i used to dick all my mates on it! good little bike! be careful though! a mate of mine i used to ride with just died on a bike, lost control and broke his neck and died instantly

Bump
This SR50 is really taking to my fancy, and its just down the road

@ Danny, any news?
Posted by tmagberry
Being a Bike rider, i think a moped is good to get you around and get you road wise, but you do have to listen to what people are telling you about being sensible.
You can be a good rider and still be cool and have fun.
I had a scooter, a 125cc and now a much bigger bike and its awesome.
You might also on the cheaper option look at some 50cc motorbike style rides. Value for money, try looking at some Chinese Imports. Cheap to repair, insure and run....

Its done plenty of miles and is coming to 4 years old. The owner wants around £600 for it which seems reasonable
Opinions ?

Honestly, I personally do not prefer Pugs, but that's just me. IMO italians make bikes. Otherwise it looks good:)

save up for some good car
Posted by Danny_BFC
Why do you want to sell it ?
Posted by haynesycop
I'd save up for a car instead, it'll be better in the long run. If you can afford to insure a car from a young age it'll come down in price quickly with any no claims you get. I'm only just getting my first car at 23 and insurance is £500 which is pretty good for a first car but i know it'd be alot cheaper if i'd have got my first wheels at 17 or 18.
Posted by Danny_BFC
1 year no claims on my scooter tho laura
Posted by haynesycop
That explains it then still would have thought it'd be hefty but alot less than a car i guess. When you getting it?
Posted by Tiny
I've got a moped, don't regret buying it at all. Great to run to work and back from. Only thing is that in winter it ain't so fun!- Hurts like hell when you fall off to
